The only reason Quebec gets equalization payments is because they have twice the population of Alberta. My house was built in 1912 and that all looks familiar, but this house is built like a tank. It has taken a lot of abuse from hurricanes and tornadoes but still stands strong.

Back in those days people would build houses out of scrap would they wood find leftover from other jobs, construction sites, abandoned railroad ties, whatever they could find when walking down the street. Home Depot didn't exist in 1910. So of course, if they didn't have a board long enough to span a room they had to nail a couple boards together which creates floating joints. To reinforce certain areas they would just nail together a bunch of scraps they had. It was Architecture by the seat of your pants.Your Grandpappy was poor and you're a spoiled child. You can laugh. But, Keep in mind that house is over a hundred years old and still standing. The crap they build today isn't going to last that long. A part of what makes it strong is the diagonal plank decking on top is much stronger and flexes less than modern plywood.

This would be the perfect time for some provinces to approach the USA about joining the union, IF the USA favored it. Canada already has precedents for secession and the rules have been set. Canada could not dispute it, because they do not have the clout to keep a willing Alberta joining the mighty USA.

When you buy an old house what you can run into is most of the wood used was hardwood and the framing is 2 1/2 inch by 4 1/2 inch unplanned for framing. Even the sheathing can be hardwood.
