People who got mad about this movie just want to be mad about SOMETHING. White people in blackface are making fun of black people. RDJ is making fun of white people in blackface. How can you miss that?

I know you reacted to this months ago. But the reason why this wasn’t offensive back then ISNT because of the time, but because it makes fun of studios who hire famous white actors to play POC characters or disabled characters. It makes fun of writers who write about diverse characters (eg. Disabled characters) and perpetuate a stereotype that does not reflect the actual lived experience of people with that disability, it makes fun of actors who are "method" and immerse themselves in roles and it is ridiculous how far they go (eg. RDJ plays a famous white actor who is "so method" he changed the pigment of his skin to get into character), and it makes fun of how films hire actors who are POC or queer to play the sidekick. And because this is Hollywood, there are no women in the cast of this star-studded film. 🙂 it makes fun of producers like Harvey Weinstein and others who are abusive - the slaps on the butt are a reference to sexual harassment on set. When the agent got a call that they "killed what they loved the most", the agent thinks his client killed a "hooker" and immediately goes into damage control and cover up mode without blinking an eye or being alarmed etc which is a commentary on the culture of covering up criminal offences perpetrated by rich people. That’s why we loved it back then. We got the joke. The "R" word was always not okay to say. The voices of the disabled community weren’t heard and THAT is why it was prevalent. Not because it was okay at the time. Just like with the N word. Something becomes "not okay" when a substantial group of people from the majority decide to listen. It does not change the fact that these words have always been a slur and derogatory since their conception.

I remember back in the day being drunk at a party with a bunch of friends. We were bored as hell and one of my friends said "let's go watch a movie". We catched the last screening and it was Tropic Thunder. We had no idea idea what the movie was about, in fact because of the poster we thought it was a war movie, but man we were wrong. I still haven't laughed that much since like that day. Also, I didn't realize that the black dude was RDJ pretty much until the end of the movie which made it even more funny. The whole point of RDJ being a dude, playing a dude disguised a another dude was a critiscism against Hollywood.

Satire isn’t a lost art. It was banned because of woke propaganda unfortunately.

“How did they get away with this”? It’s made in a time where tolerance and context were still a thing. You could see it as an insult or as a hommage to black people. I miss the days where racial jokes were launched about, by all races.

The character is the butt of the joke is how you pull off the black face. It was just poking fun at actors going way too far for a role.As a black man i found it fucking hilarious.

In the movie, RDJ says he doesn't drop character until after he does DVD commentary. And he did do the DVD commentary in character. I saw this in theaters. Everyone knew it was RDJ. It was advertised, and no one was mad. Just different times, I guess. No one knew Tom Cruise was in it! Tom read the script and thought of that character himself. Ben Stiller was the writer, so he wrote in the character based on Tom's ideas and Tom disguised his own costume, down to the hairy hands, the fat suit and the dancing lol. I laughed my behind off in the theater. Great reaction!

This is my favorite reaction of this movie man. You guys get it. I saw this in theatres back then and times were different. Sucks to actually notice that now. Pre-woke was the best times. And RDJ killed this role like no other. I don't know a single black dude who does not laugh his ass off at this.

If you think this is funny as it relates to political correctness - you should see an early 70’s movie called “Blazing Saddles”.

I actually saw this at the theatre when it came out and its just my favourite comedy of all time. Like OK some parts are maybe not as good or whatever but overall its just a hilarious concept and the performances awesome. I went and saw it with a date with a really cute girl but she wasnt having as much fun as i was and i never saw her again. Her loss! haha
