Reminds me of Thai language and its dialects, Laos language and Tai-Kadai language family. Basically, central Thai is the equivalent of modern English. Thailand can be divided into mainly 4 regions, each of them (except for the eastern part) has their own "Dialect group". A person from the northeastern part may understand most of the words in northern dialect, since it's like a mix of central Thai and northeastern Thai. Then there's southern Thai where everyone will have a hard time understanding it since it has some influences from India and Malaysia. But then again, some of the words in those dialects are still using the "Old Thai" language. For example, in central Thai, a 'Mat' would be "Sue", but in other regions, they would all call it "Saad". Mainly because central Thailand has been always the central of the power where most rich nobles reside. And for those nobles, foreign words from China, India and even Cambodia sounded more "Refined". Then there is Laos, a country up northeast from Thailand. Everyone there basically speaks funny northeastern Thai accent (or rather, northeastern Thais speak Lao with funny accent). And many people in Laos could speak Thai with no problem. For comparison, Lao is like a simplified Thai. If you use the same grammar structure for Thai, you'd be seen as a bit rude. There's also the Zhuang further up north in south China. This is like even more simplified Thai and much less formal. FYI, the word "Ku" is literally "Me" or "I" in Thai, but it's often used when you speak with your friends and you can NEVER use this with a stranger or anyone older since it's very rude. But in Zhuang, the word Ku is used as if it's just "Me"
