I have been an artist for over 30 years, working in textiles and paper. My degree was in weaving and textiles, but for quite a few years I worked in hand dyed papers, making folded paper jewelry and collage art.
These days, in my ‘retirement’ (artists never really retire!) I do a bit of everything and now that I don’t spend all my time doing production and traipsing around to shows, I have an overwhelming desire to share it all with you - whoever may be inspired by a technique or idea to enhance your own creative life. I hope you enjoy my channel!

Tray Dyeing Silk Scarves - A Striped Crinkle Scarf and a Marble Style Infinity Scarf
I'm repeating a previous video about dyeing a striped silk scarf as I left out some important details in that video about setting and rinsing the scarves - I'm also adding another tray dyeing method for creating a beautiful marbled effect. Both techniques are quite simple once you have your fibre reactive dyes mixed up.

‘It’s Silk, Not Polyester! Crepe, chiffon, satin and taffeta - what are they?
Просмотров 2947 месяцев назад
Can you tell silk from polyester? Over my years of selling at markets I've come to realize that many people don't know that silk can come in many different types of fabric and that indeed, 'crepe' and 'chiffon' and 'satin' are weaves, not fibres and were originally woven in silk. I've had customers turn there noses up at 'chiffon' or 'crepe' scarves because they think that means they're polyest...

Painting a Fun and Simple Vintage Rose Scarf - Beginner Level
Просмотров 3844 года назад
Today I’m sharing one of my favourite designs - I call them posies because they’re like a vintage rose. I only use simple resist circles, free painting and outlining with a fine black marker. Dyeing a Silk Scarf in Stripes
Просмотров 33 тыс.4 года назад
For my popular ‘crinkle’ scarves I use a direct application of Fiber Reactive Dyes to create blending colourful stripes. IMPORTANT NOTES: For info on how to mix the dyes see this video: ruclips.net/video/mYPo5aFNLNQ/видео.html Scarves have to set, covered in plastic to keep them damp, for at least 6 hours - usually I leave them overnight before rinsing. Ideally for this you should use 5mm silk ...
Mixing Fibre Reactive Dyes for Direct Dyeing on Silk
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 года назад
A demo of my method of mixing fibre reactive procion dyes for direct application such as tie dye, tray dyeing, shibori methods or even painting. This recipe is specifically for silk, but you can use it for cotton if you pre soak your item in a soda ash solution. For optimal results on cotton you may need other chemicals as well. In the video I’m only making up a third of the squeeze bottle. If ...
Painting a Silk Chiffon Scarf Part 2

www.susancorbintextiles.etsy.com I finish painting the silk chiffon scarf with yellow and turquoise. If you have any questions about technique, please ask below. Painting a Silk Chiffon Scarf Part 1
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.8 лет назад
This is the first stage of painting on a silk chiffon scarf. I'm using a direct painting technique, that is without any gutta or resist. It's very free and wide open to whatever design you want. This makes it a fun and easy way to start silk painting. The scarf was first dyed a pale green with acid dyes for silk, then painted with silk paints. The two silk paints I use can both be fixed by iron...

It’s beautiful ❤
👍👍👍👍 ✨️ 👍👍👍👍
Impressive!
Wow❤
Those scarves are gorgeous! Thank you for showing us your method in detail, including the results of variations in techniques.
Thank you!
Where do you buy your scarves?
Dharma Trading in the U. S. and G&S dyes in Toronto.
Great info and beautiful results!
Thank you!
Just want to clarify... You don't use soda ash with the silk and mx dyes just salt? I was taught to use soda ash with silk. (not other protein fibers.)
I have used sofa ash, but it turns out with this technique it’s not necessary. The time and warmth are important for setting. It’s just as well because sod’s ash is hard on the silk fibre.
LOVELY! I've been painting papers off & on for about 5 years more as a means to just expel creative energy. Never teally thought about doing a project like this! 😊 😊
I can identify - it’s so fun to paint the papers. The hard work comes with the collage creation but it’s very rewarding!
Fantastic!!! I must try this!!! I put this on my TO DO LIST!! TFS!! Austin TX USA
Enjoy!
I will definitely try this. Very interesting. Thanks.🌷
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for the video. Very informative and easy to understand
Glad it was helpful!
Love this! Thank you ❤
You're so welcome!
👍
hey if I'm using satin fabric... is it the same process? if not, please tell me the process pleeeeaaase
The stripe technique won’t work as well because the fabric is much thicker and the dye won’t go through all those layers. it may work with say, 2 or 3 layers. There is a second technique where you scrunch up the fabric to put the dye on. the result is a bit different, but at least you can make sure the dye gets everywhere. It’s in my video here: ruclips.net/video/eulZDg6fM88/видео.html. Also make sure your satin is actually silk and not polyester!
Lovely work and a great demonstration. ❤👍
Thank you!
Is this pickling salt different with normal solt
Yes, it doesn’t have added iodine.
What a beautiful idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you! 😊
How about white sulphate paper? I think that’s what it’s called. I also have mixed media paper that I’ll try. Will watered down acrylic paint work as well? I love the effect on that purple piece that you made - it reminds me of ice crystals on glass window panes 💜
It’s a technique that is typically used with watercolour, ie, watery paint but watered down acrylic may work. You can try different papers. It’s very much a trial and error thing and really, you can’t tell what paper will work until you try it.
I like rocks collage.
Bristol paper works well.
My goodness , how very fascinating! 🤩 The result is absolutely STUNNING 🌟✨️🌟 I'm blown away by your paintings at the end!👍 Thank you very much for sharing the beauty 😍 /Ditte in Sweden 🤓
Thank you so much 😀
Very cool! Thank you!😊
Glad you liked it!
Thank you! I was looking for a demo on how to remove it! There was an exhibition of Sargent watercolors that he did on location that he used cold wax resist on, but the wax was removed after painting. The wax on the pieces said it was scrapped off, but I couldn’t figure out how that was done without damage to the paper.
Very interesting - I wonder if he did it in a similar way?!
Thanks, Susan. What an interesting technique - the purple frosty paper was lovely and I like the way you use the results.
Thank you so much!
I dye paper towels for my art. A lot of neat effects for my paper crafts.
Sounds like fun - You should check out my videos on paper dyeing and painting techniques.
Thanks Susan- looks like a good book! FYI the thumbs up button doesn't seem to be working.
Thanks, I’m not sure what I can do about that - do you mean the subscribe button?
@@Susancorbinart the like button. Where you give a thumbs up
As far as I can see it’s working, it may be something on your end. Google ‘RUclips like button not working.’
Which dyes are you using?
I used fibre reactive dyes. If you look at my channel there is a video showing how to mix them. You can get them from pro Chemical Dyes or Dharma Trading. They’re both online.
Thank you
Où pouvons nous acheter tous les produits et les accessoires pour pratiquer la peinture sur soie. Merci infiniment.

Where do you get the silk fabrics? 🤔
Some from Dharma Trading in California - G&S Dye in Toronto - Maiwa in Vancouver
@@Susancorbinart : Thank you! 😊 🙏🏾💕
Hi! Lovely scarves. You mentioned working with the scarves "damp" - is that damp with water or alcohol?
Damp with water - I wet the silk then roll it in a towel to remove the excess water.
U are so soft spoken..harder to hear clearly
Point taken. I will keep that in mind!
Bello ! Gracias por compartir su arte.
Simplesmente maravilhoso 😍👏👏👏👏
Thank interesting and great demostration.
Que la técnica es muy buena, solo falta que se traduzca al español
hi! great video, are you able to store the dye for a time of do you need to use it in a window?
It’s difficult to say how long. I have used mine for a couple of months mixed up, but they do weaken a bit. For the strongest colour it’s best to use in a week or so.
What kind of dye are you using please?
Fibre Reactive dyes. The process of how to prepare them is in another video ‘Mixing Fibre Reactive Dyes’
Very nice voice.
These are beautiful! Can I use the same process on 100% cotton scarves?
You can but you may have to use a slightly different dye recipe and timing for cotton. Go to dharmatrading.com and check out their instructions for tie dyeing with fibre reactive dyes. That would work with the process in the video even though no ties are used. They have excellent instructions and all the supplies you could ever need!
Thankyou so very much, finally a learning experience that went straight to the subject, I get so tired of hearing and enduring something I could care less about,
Thank you!
What colour do you use
I used a moss green and turquoise or aqua for painting the leaves. The scarf was dyed light green. You can use any dye that is for animal fibres for the overall colour. For paints, I use either Liquid Colors from G&S Dyes in Toronto or Pebeo Setasilk.
Very nice work
Hey Susan. Incredible work! Thank you for sharing your process. Hello from Barcelona, Spain! :)
Thank you! Hello from Nova Scotia Canada!
Hola que tinturas son? Las rellena con agua? Gracias!!
Please see this video for info on the dyes : ruclips.net/video/mYPo5aFNLNQ/видео.html
Thank you for a great demonstration. What is the size of scarf you make and where do you buy your fabric from? Will the colors sold at Walmart as a 18 color kit work ? Thank you for your time
Go to dharma trading online. I use their fiber reactive dyes with the cold water method. Generally You can’t get thes get these dyes retail.
hi..your work is beautiful..I'm wondering how you display them ? thank you.
I have a folding wicker screen that I take to shows and I hang some originals and prints on that. The extras, I put in baskets.
Hermoso!! Español!!
En español sorry!!
Are they washable after they are dried? What do you add so the colors don’t get washed out?
There is nothing added to fix the dyes - it is the time (minimum 6 hours) and keeping the scarves damp by covering in plastic that fixes the dyes. Then they have to be rinsed to remove excess dye- then they can be washed in warm water any time.
Where is the process for making the dye? I don't see it
It is in this video ruclips.net/video/mYPo5aFNLNQ/видео.html
