Welcome to my channel. I am retired and live on Mount Desert Island, Maine. I make videos about various aspects of life on the island. My topics include reviews of lobster rolls, sailing the waters around the island, the solitude of winter, dealing with the hordes of summer tourists, housing and the cost of living here and videos about the towns on the island. For example I go to Bar Harbor pretty much every month so you can watch my Bar Harbor videos and see the town on crowded summer days as well as quiet snowy winter days and everything in between My cat Blackie also sometimes agrees to star in a video. I hope you enjoy my channel.

Fall 2024 Sailboat Work Done - Nov. 25, 2024

Last Friday, Nov. 22, I epoxied the second piece of new core into the deck of Seaquestor, my Allied Princess 36 Ketch. The weather is getting colder now with overnight lows in the 20s and lower, so I am finished with fiberglass work for this Fall. So today I went aboard the boat, tidied up and removed everything that can't freeze. I may go aboard one or two times over the winter IF it warms up ...

Thanks nice job I purchased a Cape Dory 10 shell a couple months ago completely empty that had been sitting for years . That brought me here very similar boats. Curious why you left the skeg area hollow . I think Dory boats are filled and the floor follows the hull curve.
I bought a cheap one, it failed, bought another , should have bought one of these
Thanks for taking us along. We always enjoy seeing what it looks like up there in the winter.
My pleasure Roger.
12/30/24: Happy New Year, Todd! And Happy Sailing in 2025.
Thank you Todd. Always enjoy climbing in the passenger side and checking out all the views. Never get tired at looking at the ocean Wish you a very happy and healthy New Year
I am glad you enjoyed the drive.
Todd, just want to thank you for all the valuable videos during your knee surgery and longterm recovery which helped enormously for my own TKR this year, and the videos on sailing and your beautiful home area, like this one! Best wishes for you and your wife for a very Happy, Healthy 2025. And stay warm out there this winter!
Thank you for the kind words. I am glad your surgery went well.
Another problem is no illegals pushes up the cost of labor. Do you have any immigration issues?
Your pension check I presume is in Canadian dollars which needs to be converted. Maybe that has something to do why no direct deposit. Do you need to go back to Canada every 6 months?
Yes my checks are in Canadian dollars. Back when they were direct depositing them they did the conversion in Canada and sent US dollars. The same applies to my Canada pension. I don't go back to Canada since I am an American and worked in Canada as a landed immigrant.
the coffee shop ;back past carrolls drug store, should be open all year, that was what we were told.
Yes I think it is open. I have never been there so I tend to forget about it.
@@todddunn945 they had non dairy ice cream which I can eat.
@@williamthawley9251 Interesting. Is that sherbet?
@@todddunn945 no, oat milk vanilla, and you can put toppings on it.
there were a couple of waitstaff lived in bar harbor, but the vast majority lived in ellsworth, even hanover.
Yes there are a few locals that work in local businesses. However, if you open or buy a business here and are looking to hire new staff it will be hard particularly if you are looking for skilled workers. Most of the local businesses have permanent help wanted signs. Also it is tough to fill seasonal positions unless you provide housing. In Southwest Harbor most of the restaurants are closed 1-2 days a week in the summer because of staff shortages. The only places that are open seven days a week own housing for their staff.
@@todddunn945 we had that trouble too at the jersey shore in cape may. one of the bars owned a home where there employees stayed.. we had at one time a couple that tent camped and rode bikes into town.
@@williamthawley9251 The biggest issue here is that in the summer ALL rental housing is directed toward tourists. Even tent camping would set you back at least $1K a month IF you could find a place that would let you stay long term. That is a downside of being in a major tourist area.
@@todddunn945 yes there is, cape may was no different. it was difficult hiring for the pharmacy, you get them too early in may and they leave to do waiter or waitress jobs, where the real money is.
Love the video Dr Dunn, maybe an updated drive around video of what businesses that are open during the winter - specifically Somesville, SW harbor, & Northeast Harbor. Thank You!
Not much is open in Somesville. Just the Shell station/convenience store. Of course that is pretty much all that is ever open there. I could head over to Northeast, perhaps next week since it is supposed to rain for the next few days.
@ that would be awesome. Thank you!
I'm watching for the first time I'm 64 12/28/60 today is my birthday!
Well happy birthday young fella. I hope you enjoyed the drive.
Thanks for letting us ride along with you, we certainly appreciate it!
My pleasure Jeff.
I enjoy a drive around MDI anytime, Todd!! Thanks! Glad your weather warmed up a bit!! ☀️
You are very welcome. It is nice to have it above freezing after a chilly week. It is 34 and foggy this morning.
I'm a little confused at 7:56 where you say to use a 30 amp in line fuse or a 15 amp breaker. Why wouldn't they both be 30 amp. I'm a novice to electrical wiring but trying to learn.
Thanks for the scenery. Hope you're having a great holiday season!
The snow is melting now, so we are happy. Happy New Year!
Thanks man !

Thanks for the video Todd, i hope that you had a good Christmas.

Love the snow video Dr Dunn! Hope to keep up the correspondence with you as well. Stay warm :)
I am glad you enjoyed looking at the frozen Maine coast.
Nice to hear from you Todd!! I hope you had a nice Christmas and are dealing with your snow okay! No white Christmas here! 😏 But yay!!! The days are getting longer!!!! ☀️
We are doing just fine. We had left over Thanksgiving turkey for Christmas dinner and a very nice Oregon Pinot Noir in the evening. The snow is already melting and hopefully will be mostly gone by the new year. I hope you are having a nice holiday period.
Hi Todd. Am curious. what did you work as before retirement. Thanks.

Merry Christmas Todd, loved the snow.
I am glad you enjoyed the drive.
saw that snow thru your window. we had a white christmas also, about 2 inches on top of 3 inches.
Ours was about 2" followed by 5" two days later. A lot will melt over the next few days.

😅Fantastic for you im 75 male scheduled for Jan 15th 2025 watching your video is encouraging good luck with your recovery further wish I lived in your area
Did you have regular TKR or robotic assisted procedure? I’m having mine done robotically in March of 2025.
It was a regular one. I just had a very good recovery.
Is it me, or is the mainmast boom missing?
Good shoes are really important. Also try replacing the inserts with Superfeet green orthodic inserts available at Cadillac Mt. Sports. You should also try a couple of sessions with a reflexologist for your neuropathy. There’s a good one in SWH, Michelle Mays.
Thank you for the suggestions. However, I don't do alternative medicine.
@ It worked for me and my wife. What have you got to lose besides nerve pain? Another thing to try - next time you’re in Home Depot, pick up a 40 lb. bag of gravel and carry it around the store and see how long before your knees hurt from the Extra Weight. What I’m trying to say is… well, you get it.
All that will go away with time. Dont worry. Lets say 6 more months to a year and u will be normal 100%
That is what my surgeon has been telling me for 21 months.
Holy shit. I hope my insurance covers this
Yes this is not something you want to pay out of pocket. Since I had my treatment 7 years ago there have been pretty significant price increases. Looking at the Obinutuzumab alone I would guess that the total charge for this therapy would be in the $325K range. Of course, now days the chlorambucil is replaced with Venetoclax which is a bit more pricey. Based on looking at the Medicare Part D drug tool, it looks like Venetoclax costs about $215K for one year of pills. So adding that to the cost of Obituzumab and subtracting off the Chlorambucil brings the cot for obinutuzumab + venetoclax to about $500K. I hope you have decent insurance. With my traditional Medicare, F supplement and my part D plan my cost for one year of obinutuzumab + plus Venetoclax would be $2,000 if the treatment all happened from January through December and $4,000 if it ran into two years. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you can expect to hit the out of pocket maximum in the calendar year that you have the obinutuzumab infusions plus you will have the $2,000 copay for the Venetoclax during each year you are taking it. If your obinutuzumab infusions go into two calendar years you will hit the out of pocket maximum both years if you have two or more infusions in the second year.
@ I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I’m still a decade away from Medicare. My Oncologist is trying to get pre authorization.🤞🫠
Thank you for this video. I’m starting my first infusion in a couple weeks. I’m extremely nervous and I’m glad you posted this series. I’m going to watch them all. I’m hoping you’re doing well and I’m subscribing to keep up on your life’s journey!
I am glad you found the videos reassuring. I am doing fine with my leukemia still in remission. During your first infusion do tell the nurses immediately if you feel at all odd. Infusion reactions are common during the first infusion, but the nurses know how to deal with them. For me, once I got past my infusion reaction the rest of my 6 month treatment was easy. Good luck!
@ thank you so much for the reply, advice, and encouragement. I’m so glad you’re still in remission ❤️
@@koveredincake Thanks, I feel the same way about the continues remission. I am coming up on 7 years since treatment. I never expected to get such a good result. I hope your treatment goes as well. I assume you are doing Obinutuzumab + Venetoclax. Good Luck.
Great work buddy! I’m getting ready to buy one and you answered all the questions!
I am glad you found the video useful.
Hi Todd been a year since had the opp, Still leaking and still have to where them contence pads still, My psa was 7,8 contained it was so was looky, Plus have to back for another psa why the bladder is still leaking,It's to much to go into is'ent it, Good video take care vince
I hope things get resolved for you. That doesn't sound fun at all.
They told me i wil, be going home same day
A lot of people do go home the same day. My surgeon is a bit old fashioned.
Why did they keep. You over night?
I suppose it was just the way my surgeon does things. I was told I would be staying overnight when the surgery was scheduled.
I felt really positive about having a TKR after watching your first video about your recovery. I wish I hadn't watched this update though I do appreciate you doing it. I hope your muscles and tendons get better really soon. Best wishes.
So do I. Don't base your decision on how I have done. Everyone is different. My current issues may be my own fault for pushing too hard early on. Who knows.
Thanks for the update. Hope the new shoes help you a lot.
Thanks Roger. The shoes are making a difference.
Thank you for the update Todd and of course a chance to meet Blackie 😊 I’m still uncomfortable with my knee as well - and experience nearly the exact same symptoms I did a round of physical therapy and then signed up for a membership in a gym designed for us older folks. But I haven’t been able to go due to the extreme cold and a nasty virus My knee is 18 months “old” I’ll go and see the surgeon at two years but I don’t want more surgery either - I also went to the podiatrist who sent me to the shoe department where I was fitted with shoes that were the correct size for my feet and that seemed to help as well Thank you again for updating- i got so discouraged at the posts about all the great things folks were doing after such a short time - I’m truly glad for them but we’re all different I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas 😊😊😊😊
Thanks for the comment Robin. It sounds like you are having basically the same experience as I am. At 12 months my surgeon had several x-rays done of my knee and said everything looked perfect. I am hoping for some sort of relief at my two year visit perhaps in the form of an injection of some sort of long lasting analgesic.
@ You’re welcome ☺️ I went for a visit at 14 months and he did X-rays and said all was well and make sure I’m doing exercises which I did but I’ll need to wait for warmer temperatures- I have fibromyalgia and the cold really gives me issues Here is a picture of Skywalker - he’s my rescue kitty I rescued him when he was barely a year and now he’s 10!!!
@@robinrobinson8989 Blackie is a rescue too. He is about 7 and we have had him for two years. He has settled in nicely and agreed to let us continue living in his house.
@ 😀😀 I can’t get a picture of Skywalker transferred to you Poor Skywalker has not totally agreed to sharing his space with me and Iggy (21) But through patience and loss of blood (mine) he did agree not to bite when he’s had enough petting LOL He isn’t a mean cat but he bites and scratches out of fear and mistrust I’ve learned that if he is not in a good mood but he’s purring to watch his eyes - sometimes he just wants to lay beside me no petting I’d hoped to be able to pick him up and cuddle him but he won’t go for that - so Iggy gets the cuddles 😊😊😊😊 Skywalker gets pets when he’s ready Lol
@@robinrobinson8989 As it should be. Blackie is very willing to be petted and brushed and often demands pets.
Great explanation, much appreciated, saved me a phone call to local battery dealer.
Hi Todd - I’m 8 weeks after having both knees totally replaced at the same time. I had pretty significant nerve pain but taking Gabapentin that has helped tremendously. You may want to try it! I only had to take it for several weeks and then the nerve pain really improved to the point where I don’t need to take the gabapentin more than two or three times a week and I just need one pill. Good luck and keep at it! You’re doing great.
I will ask the surgeon about it when I see him in March. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for sharing your recovery! I just wanted to add for anyone else who is having TKR, that all of us will recover differently so you can’t base one persons success on another persons. I have learned that through my own recovery process. Eight weeks ago I had both of my knees totally replaced at the same time. This represents, of course, its own difficulties because it is a much harder recovery and quite a bit more painful. But even with only one knee being replaced, recovery does not typically go as quickly as yours has and I hope I am wrong, but I do believe that you may have some challenges coming up further down the line. I hope I am not right and that you continue to recover as quickly as you have. My point was just to caution others that it is usually not this easy! Good luck
Thanks for the comment. I was just reporting how I was doing and it was never my intention to suggest otherwise. I hope your recovery continues well. I would never want to even think about doing both knees at once.
Tomorrow, I'll be 9 weeks post-op right TKR. I can walk about a mile just fine, but I feel a tight horizontal band across the top of my knee. It's not really painful, but it's a bit uncomfortable. The sides of my knee also ache, especially after my exercises. I'm still going to PT 2x a week until Christmas. I can climb stairs, but its still a bit painful. I need to build up and strengthen the muscles in my leg all over again. I believe my PT will release me around Christmas to just doing my home exercises on a daily basis. I expect to be doing exercises for much of 2025.
It sounds like you are doing well. Nine weeks is still pretty early. Keep working at it.
I know that shoes definitely make a difference on my back since i'm on my feet all day, hopefully the new shoes help you a bit.
The new shoes are already making a difference.
Thanks for your video, and update. Have a good day Todd Dunn.
You are welcome. Have a good day yourself.
Suggest try Hoka running shoes meant for big guys. Big mistake wearing shoes to long. Alternatively, I am fan of Merrill’s. Spend money on good shoes.
I bought a new pair of Hush Puppies walking shoes.
Thanks for update. My left fractured kneecap surgery was 13 months ago with not much pain. I do notice that that leg still has less strength and I can lift 55 pounds versus 70 in my right leg. I think it helps that I walk 3-4 miles a day. By the way if you have trouble sleeping check out sleep reset by Stanford. They adjust your sleep based on cognitive behavior therapy. No more sleeping pills for me. By the way no more surgery for me.
I don't have any problem sleeping and have no need to any sort of behavior therapy. I have never taken a sleeping pill in my life.
Thank you for showing the shore path! I didn’t realize those 2 storms damaged it so badly. It’s been a little over a year since I’ve been there and I miss Bar Harbor very much. Your videos there help very much!
I am glad you find my videos useful. Thanks for watching.
I’m not sure who this is helping….good for you on excellent recovery with basically no pain/symptoms but how is this helping anyone who does have pain and issues with recovery?
It wasn't meant to help anyone. I am simply documenting my recovery.
Todd, i watched last years December 4th video of you shoveling the snow after a storm. Keep'em coming my friend!
More coming soon. I have been a bit under the weather recently and haven't been out much. I am better now and will be getting out more.
