      I'm trying a few more tree varieties from seed. If I come right, I will send some your way. Next year I plan on building some more stands for my trees. I'm going to try and repot my expensive JWP next year as Adam said its not been repotted for a few years. If you have any advice, I'm all ears. As I'm so nervous about this. Stay warm! Hope you feel better soon, Ricky x

      @ 2025 I really want to get into a club, spend more time creating pots etc as I’m pretty much maxed out on how many trees I can keep now. Unless I find a bigger living space 😂 you will be fine I’m sure

      @ I find when repotting it’s better to be safe than sorry, if it has a good rootball you shouldn’t have to cut much away and as long as the tree has health and vigour it should bounce back fine

      @@robertscarborough68 that’s what the channel is all about for now. Specimens are beautiful but I think new people to the craft get blinded by these big expensive imported trees. I for one couldn’t grasp it at first. I just like to show it’s still possible with a small budget and small space :)

    I love the chatty approach and what you are doing here. I think most people struggle to achieve aerial roots with ficus in the uk.

      @@XaviersBonsaiRetreat it does seem to be illusive but if Nigel can grow them in Canada I see no reason why we can’t… thank you, I do yap on sometimes but I think some RUclips videos can be too structured at times, other times I realise I’m such a novice that there’s no point in me going too far into the science etc as I’m still learning my self 😂 thanks as always Xavier !

    Well done. Ive been growing and killing bonsai for many years. Your 5 key points are so right. Even after nearly 30 years of growin bonsai I still kill trees occasionally

    That decision to take it right back to basic structure is so important and often ignored by newer hobbyists. I love how you are systematically building this bonsai. great stuff :)

      @@XaviersBonsaiRetreat thanks, it’s sometimes hard to take 3 steps back so you can then take one step forward. I think new people to the hobby want to hold on to every branch, after doing this for a few years and being brave I just know with some species what will happen if I cut back. Some species still perplex me though 😂 thanks for watching as always

      Thanks Alex, it’s almost too much for now. Need more space !! It could possibly be, snuck in through the air layer possibly. It’s a shame but I’m also glad as I’ve only had it a year and hadn’t done any work on it. I think trees that perish that you’ve worked on for years are the harder ones to take !

    Noo! dont cut that branch on the right it gives you asimetry and makes the tree interesting, if it goes, it will make it a bit of a boring blob/cone

      I think you may be confused with the sacrificial branch and the right hand branch…. The plan was never to remove the right side branch but to remove the sacrificial coming from Lower on the trunk 👍🏼

      @@YasuiBonsai yep I use powder hormone and keep them wet in my greenhouse. I have a little $20 greenhouse from the supermarket which works the trick, very similar to what Callan from rojin bonsai has on his bench but bigger... That keeps the cuttings moist, gotta make sure to keep it off the ground or use lots of slug pellets, they love they conditions in there, voracious little buggers

      @@Bonsai_Noob yeah I have an issue with slugs atm, I try to use natural remedies as much as I can as there’s also a hedgehog that visits my trees nearly every night… knocks some over sometimes 😂

    Recommend some proper branch cutters to get a clean cut then use some wound putty. Nice tree

      Hi Graham, I do have some concave cutters and that’s what I used on the bigger previous cuts where I could. I only like using the putty stuff on coniferous, I find the liquid stuff works better for deciduous and tropical unless it’s a huge cut. Thanks for watching

    Looking good. Ficus are always fun to Bonsai and they grow fast and push out shoots everywhere.

      Thanks, ficus are probably one of my top 5 species to work with. Forgiving, grow anywhere, aerial roots etc, very fun trees.

    Great application of horticultural principles. The same factors are also 😊paramount for successful outdoor and indoor container plants. The difference being the human factor where Bonsai are more purposefully tortured by a master where container plants tend to be over pampered by a novice.

      I personally find container plants easier to deal with as long as they have sufficient drainage. The container size is the critical factor of how exponentially harder it gets to care for plants/ trees. Over loving or over pampering can also be an issue, or over reaction to any kind of leaf drop etc. thank you for watching :)

    I tried this with Jordan when I first started growing and it did not respond well. I hope yours does! While I think some cultivars are not as vigorous or ideal for bonsai, I still try as well. I chalk a lot of my failures to the learning curve of bonsai.

    Looking great bud and i wouldn't worry too much about trimming the roots. Usually maples are as tough as old boots and recover well. Re the leaf size, leaves can be reduced over time. I've reduced the leaf size of a Sycamore by nearly 4 times 😮

      That’s amazing ! I have only managed to reduce the leaf size of a Chinese elm and a ficus thus far (not very impressive). I think the key is a properly sized pot and management of growth. I will persist in reducing this one !

    You've gone hard on the roots but it'll reward you with a good root flare one day mate. I love the leaf on this variety. Nice one 💪🌳

      Have to be relentless although mindful when it comes to pruning. The implications of not pruning back hard can sometimes set people back years in terms of development. Yeah I love this variety to I just wish they where smaller leafs 😂 thanks for watching as always Alex

      My favourite is hard to pick. In terms of browning as a bonsai the Chinese elm is incredibly forgiving and easy to ramify. That being said I’m a sucker for a maple or any flowering trees. Shishigashira or cotoneaster would be my top picks 👍🏼 how about you ?
