@YasuiBonsai biggest closest to the viewer and smallest to the back to give the impression of distance. Odd numbers and keep place them in a random place so it looks like it was formed naturally. Other than that go nuts. 👍🏼

@@bonsaiexpression yeah I’ve seen the rule of 9 before, 3 clumps of 3 essentially with as you say the biggest at the front and smallest at the back… I’ve also seen the chop stick method of tying them in place so I think that should help

@PXIOMXTIC thank you. It was such a good find. Was tipped out of its pot, hard the foliage had died, roots exposed, £40 reduced to £10 I think… I will have a video up soon before spring of how it’s grown over the past year and future plans :) thanks for watching

@@PaulHolmes-gg7kg hi Paul, unfortunately it’s how a lot of sellers get away with selling more of them. Now not to say they can’t be kept indoors but to emulate the outside conditions indoors is very hard and costly. Chinese elms will always do better outside (if you are in a temperate climate) mine are out year round in tiny pots, the one in the video was on the bench during -7c temps, they can go down to about -10c. In fact they need that rest time. It would be fine in an un-heated green house provided your not in northern Scotland. As I say down to -10c I’m confident they’re ok if they are healthy. Of course if you have done any work on them I’d only trust it down to -5c… worst case you can bring them indoors for a few days until the night time temps are ok just remember to put it back out before it starts pushing growth, in your house it’s like spring/ summer temps with 10% of the light

@ thank you. I will definitely be putting it outside but as it’s had the warmth it’s growing new leaves… is it just ok to put it outside now and keep watered? Last night was 7 in the south UK so for now warmed up a lot but I am sure temps will drop again. Will the leaves drop now mid winter. Just trying to gauge what the tree will do for the next few months before spring hits. Once it’s outside it will stay there. ☺️

@ if it has new leafs I would wait until temps aren’t going in the minuses. They are hardy trees and can withstand a fair bit. But for the sake of keeping the new leafs a I would wait until they harden off/ the weather is 5c at night minimum

@@PaulHolmes-gg7kg honestly with the UK weather you probably won’t need to water it much until spring starts. Depending on the soil it is in will depend how often you water, a good rule of thumb is when you notice the top of the soil drying out then water, in organic soil this will take longer to dry, in bonsai soil I mean I water mine once every day spring and 2-3 times a day in summer, because the soil is so free draining there’s no risk of root rot

@@YasuiBonsai thank you so much. Will leave indoors in the coolest room at night. During the day, it’s in the conservatory with as much light as possible, wait for new growth to stop and will put in small greenhouse to protect from wind and frost. In spring, out out.

Thanks mate, Japanese larch are amazing trees to have in a collection. They also look great in forests, I have a video out later today with 9 euro larch I’m going to be setting up in a forest come spring 💪🏼

@@Bonsai_Noob thank you, I agree with your remarks. And thanks I had a hard time October- December so I wasn’t posting much but feeling better now and determined, re focused on my trees. I should be getting a new place this year with more room so I can grow more :) I will have a look at your stuff tonight, honestly it’s so much fun filming and editing. Even better when people interact with it 💪🏼

@ honestly the filming and editing part is another rabbit hole isn’t it 😂 I need to look more into lighting etc for filming indoors, possibly invest some money into the production value side of it. Theres been times I’ve recorded working on trees and forgot to talk 😂

I'm trying a few more tree varieties from seed. If I come right, I will send some your way. Next year I plan on building some more stands for my trees. I'm going to try and repot my expensive JWP next year as Adam said its not been repotted for a few years. If you have any advice, I'm all ears. As I'm so nervous about this. Stay warm! @ 2025 I really want to get into a club, spend more time creating pots etc as I’m pretty much maxed out on how many trees I can keep now. Unless I find a bigger living space 😂 you will be fine I’m sure

@ I find when repotting it’s better to be safe than sorry, if it has a good rootball you shouldn’t have to cut much away and as long as the tree has health and vigour it should bounce back fine

Im looking forward to the club next year. Think it will be fun to meet like-minded people. Thanks, just stressing about it. I'm sure it will be fine. I mean it can't be that much different to repotting my other trees. I even brought some mycorrihizal fungi for when I repot it and Bernie

@@robertscarborough68 that’s what the channel is all about for now. Specimens are beautiful but I think new people to the craft get blinded by these big expensive imported trees. I for one couldn’t grasp it at first. I just like to show it’s still possible with a small budget and small space :)

Thanks Alex, it’s almost too much for now. Need more space !! It could possibly be, snuck in through the air layer possibly. It’s a shame but I’m also glad as I’ve only had it a year and hadn’t done any work on it. I think trees that perish that you’ve worked on for years are the harder ones to take !

I think you may be confused with the sacrificial branch and the right hand branch…. The plan was never to remove the right side branch but to remove the sacrificial coming from Lower on the trunk 👍🏼

@@YasuiBonsai oh yeah, that will need to go lol. After I re-watxhed the video without kids screaming around I got that. Your plan to air layer sounds good. Could also do it as a cuttings

@@YasuiBonsai yep I use powder hormone and keep them wet in my greenhouse. I have a little $20 greenhouse from the supermarket which works the trick, very similar to what Callan from rojin bonsai has on his bench but bigger... That keeps the cuttings moist, gotta make sure to keep it off the ground or use lots of slug pellets, they love they conditions in there, voracious little buggers

@@Bonsai_Noob yeah I have an issue with slugs atm, I try to use natural remedies as much as I can as there’s also a hedgehog that visits my trees nearly every night… knocks some over sometimes 😂

Unfortunately this one died, not due to the air layer, but due to a pathogen. I will try again this year

Hi Graham, I do have some concave cutters and that’s what I used on the bigger previous cuts where I could. I only like using the putty stuff on coniferous, I find the liquid stuff works better for deciduous and tropical unless it’s a huge cut. Thanks for watching

Thanks, ficus are probably one of my top 5 species to work with. Forgiving, grow anywhere, aerial roots etc, very fun trees.

I personally find container plants easier to deal with as long as they have sufficient drainage. The container size is the critical factor of how exponentially harder it gets to care for plants/ trees. Over loving or over pampering can also be an issue, or over reaction to any kind of leaf drop etc. thank you for watching :)
