Living below your means is hard. Especially when everyone is always trying to sell you something or show off their "wealth." But those who are truly wealthy do not spend more than they have. We are on a debt free journey and hope to someday soon be financially free so that our time is our own and doesn't belong to any boss or corporation. Yeah, keep up the good work. I am in a similar situation as you. I did pretty much the same as you for the same reason. I think I am well on the journey of spending less, but I still watch this type of content for a reminder. Without reminders, I can start to creep up again to spending more on these just this one time type of mindset, especially when someone else is instigating the spending or around the holidays. I would add that focus 1st on the big ticket items. I got rid of a lot of stuff so that I could downsize my apartment. I gave up driving which removes gas, I have been on trial period to see if I can truly give up my car. It seems as though I can, when I do I will give up a nearly $200 per month expense (That is what I calculate owning my car costs if I do not ever drive it. Since I have driven it a few times since the experiment began, my cost per mile is probably over $10 per mile. If I do not ever drive it well... I guess that mathematically would mean that the cost shoots up to infinite dollars per mile. I do not want to own an asset that is infinitely expensive per unit of utility, so yeah it is time to ditch the car completely.) What else: Oh I have started to be intentional about entertainment. Now, I am a person who really likes to have fun, but fun can come in all kinds of price tags. Well here, I look at the fun options and kind look to maximize the function of optimized_fun= qty_fun/cost_of_fun. Here I try to aim towards infinity. Examples: playing in the ocean body surfing is really fun and the cost is just wear and tear on my swimming trunks not quite infinity, but awfully close. Point is I look at my fun through those lenses. The giving up my car also does mean I will ride my bike more which means more fun. Mindset shift on time management. I now see time management as an exercise of maximize time doing thing that are in one of the good feelings: fun, happy, peaceful, good_excited ( as opposed to bad_excited), relaxed.. what ever is a good feeling. This allows me to see the slightly slower bike ride to my destination as a more time efficient use of my time than driving. Healthy food and gym memberships I spend a lot on, but this is to take care of me, not wasted money. If someone only looked at how much I spend on those 2 things they would think I was a wildly out of control with my spending, and I do not care. All of the money I save on the other above things more than makes up for my oversized grocery, dining and gym spending. With dining, I choose truly healthy restaurants not those expensive for the atmosphere restaurants except for truly special occasions.
@Joseph2day that is all so great! I love the function for optimized fun. I find hiking, biking, and reading to really give me the most value for almost no cost. And health is definitely so important and not taking care of yourself now will definitely be more expensive in the future.
Congrats on your porgress! I am new around here, can you explain or point me to a video about this roof cost? That's clearly a serious roof at 44k!
@TheahLil Welcome! I believe I first mentioned it probably in my March recap or maybe April or May. But the short story is the whole roof was replaced along with all the plywood underneath and the gutters. We replaced 6 windows upstairs along with 1 of the skylights and covered over the other 3.
@@kronsonfamily Isn't it bonkers how much house costs are? It really blows my mind. Most people don't build such things into their ideas for how much home ownership is.
@TheahLil yes and I have to admit that I was a little bit naive to the maintenance and upkeep costs of a larger home. I didn't want a house this big but I couldn't find a small house on a large lot (I have almost 3 acres).
If you can gimme some ideas on how to avoid high rent$ without being forced to live in a van or the streets, then my hat off to you :)
@RobertEnleed that is hard. Rent prices are so crazy and usually the cheapest ones are not in nice areas or there are serious problems. I lived somewhere where the bedroom would flood when it rained really hard. I recommend roommates? But that's coming from someone who has only lived alone or with a partner.
@@kronsonfamily I have tried for 3 years to get nice roomates but they all turned out toxic or worst. Nah....humanity is gone
@RobertEnleed kind of why I never went the roommate route...
@@kronsonfamily in that case, we wish ourselves good luck for the future.
KATHY! i guess mrs k was fitting either way, happy to know your name 😊 thanks for the tips. I need to practice contentment.
@budgetfor5withstephanie yes! being happy with what you have is a hard thing to learn especially when the whole world is always telling you that you want and need more!
I am financially free so I am increasing my lifestyle a little. I am still frugal and I had a 40% savings rate in 2024. I can let off the gas a little. The saver in me wants to save more than 40% in 2025, but my wife deserves to enjoy life a little more.😊❤
@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle I think that switching from saving to spending will be a little difficult for me now
I am giving you a shout out in my video that will come out tomorrow. This video inspired tomorrow’s video.
@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle Wow! Thanks! I've watched almost all of your videos and I think it's awesome that you were able to retire early!
Great advice, and tips! 👏
@maarjorielass3118 Thanks!
Hi Mrs K, congrats on hitting your roof savings goal 🎉 great bwm 😊
@budgetfor5withstephanie Thank you! I'm honestly so surprised we were able to do it before the end of the year.
Great transfers Mrs K. Hope you're having a good week 😊
@budgetfor5withstephanie thank you! I hope you are as well!
Awesome. We are all encouraging each other. I am transferring 3K from rentals to my CC debt.
@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle that''s great! I would love to have income from rental property someday.
@@kronsonfamily it’s not pretty in the beginning, but it is worth it in the end. You have to stomach the setbacks. I used my W2 income to feed the properties in the lean times and the rentals are replacing my W2 income. Keep in mind that I am retired and my W2 income is my side hustle 🙂❤️
My home sinking fund is doing the same thing. We keep draining it for things and now with higher property taxes, we have less to put in every month to build it back up
@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle Owning a home can be so expensive! Our property taxes are paid through escrow so we don't see the changes immediately but it impacts our mortgage payment every year. I'm glad you've still been able to build it back up!
Lender’s Club still has good rate on the HYSA
@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle I've heard of them but I don't know anything about them. Is it peer-to-peer style lending? Transfers to my credit union are currently in progress and they're offering 4%. If I find out it's just promotional, I'll look into switching yet again.
I wish my employer 401K match was that good!
@ashoppa it is really good and I'm very fortunate. I just heard that the most common match is 50% on 6%. I didn't even realize companies did a less that 100% match.
Good Morning friend, great job.
@moneywithjustliving5258 thank you!
Coast FI is a misnomer to me. We were able to truly coast at 31 before FI was even a term then find out much later it means you still work. Glad you let him spend some.
@7SideWays yeah I think that it's just the feeling of security or freedom you get knowing that you don't have to save anything more and you should be all set for a typical retirement. In that way it's like barista FI where you only have to work enough to cover your everyday expenses, so you could work less.
What i have always said-if u only spend money u have in hand u will be healthy and wealthy in retirement.Easier said than done,but just attempting this will set you on a upward path.Financial literacy is the most lacking component of life these days,(common sense #2). God bless.
@JohnHobbs-o3z That is so true!
@@kronsonfamily Little bit of advice-make sure before you retire,have a large cash reserve set aside for sequence risk.That way you can be very bold with your investments through retirement and not worry about up and down markets.I know you are young,but start now if u can.I am 64,retired 7 years,only touched my cash in 2020 covid crash,did not touch investments that year.during my 7 years i have pulled out close to 7% per year,portfolio has still grown by about 20%.Sequence risk is real,this avoids it. God Bless.
please look into some other contractors for your roof. unless your home is 5,000 sq foot, $44,000 is ridiculous!!
@dair1972 It's too late. We should have gotten more quotes but that cost also includes replacing all the plywood underneath and 6 windows. Also covering over 3/4 skylights, replacing 1.
Great update!
@ashoppa Thank you!!! <3
A very helpful video, you do so well with your low spend budget! 👏
@marjorielass3118 Thank you! I'm more of a saver than a spender, but I do have my weaknesses.

@ashoppa Thanks! We're still a bit sick but I'm so grateful that I have paid sick leave. Wish that I was able to do some work from home though.
Wonderful news. I love Transfer Tuesdays. I rarely have money because I chunk it towards debt as soon as it comes in. Keep posting as you motivate me to continue to build wealth
@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle Thank you for the encouragement. I would be throwing a lot of this at debt if I wasn't terrified of the 20% interest rate on the roof loan that kicks in in April if I don't pay off the full balance!
@ I get it. My wife and I just bought an RV at a lake and used a Heloc. It is a tiny loan compared to the equity in our home but it is at 8% and we hate that. The faster we pay it off the better we will feel. Our home interest is below 3% so I do not want to pay more that 3% on the RV loan.
@@FIRE_DrNinjaTurtle I'm sure you can get it paid off fast. I hate paying interest!
@ yes. It is my top priority.
Hi Mrs K, great bwm! Thats exciting about the roof payoff! Cheering u on! I did my nov budget yesterday, i will be posting it tomorrow. Cant believe were nearing the finish line of 2024.
@budgetfor5withstephanie Thank you! I can't believe the year is almost over, it went by so fast.
thanks for your budget spreadsheet, i would request people's email addresses to build your list of subscribers outside of youtube. Good Luck!
@sharmeenuquili1867 I appreciate the suggestion. Thank you!
Hi Mrs K, great BWM! I hope yall have a great time pumpkin painting!
@budgetfor5withstephanie Thank you!
You don't look like you are 30. Once you have finance figured out, and are doing the right things (and you guys are!) it becomes boring. Just keep doing what you are, you guys are killing it!
@brianmorton8169 Haha it is getting kind of boring. This year was a bit crazier than most with the roof replacement, unpaid leave, and adding in daycare. But it's all smoothed out for now.
This lighting or angle is much better!
@brianmorton8169 thanks!
I would think, pay the retirement loan and debt down, then you would have more savings for the renovation project. Once the reno is covered go part-time, and up investing/retirement.
@MungoLouis, that is a good idea. I didn't really think that eliminating the debts would allow us to save more, but we are paying over $4k a month in debt and that would be a huge boost towards savings.
I would probably pay extra towards retirement loan and save for a renovation project. I changed my 401K future investments around this week and even though rates are down took the extra out of my checking account and put into a 4 week t-bill
Oh yeah, that way I'm kind of investing more while also paying off the loan. It's great that you can keep saving!
Thanks Cathy. For your understanding your too right we are well underpaid and undervalued but I’m too old now too change now close to retirement all the best for your future good luck regards Michael x
I had a good spending budget in September too ❤
@charity7273 That is so great! So happy for you!
Obviously your not a school caretaker salary lol
@ MichaelGaynor-t2n No, I'm not. I worked in psychology for 5 years doing direct care so I understand living off of 25k. I went back to school to be a software engineer because that salary was not livable and there was no growth. I totally appreciate all types of caretaker jobs though. They need higher pay.
Great video I feel like you are starring in to my soul
Thank you!
Great work!! I am so happy for your consistency and hard work!!❤
@sarahwagner-sheridan7061 Thank you! That means so much!
love videos like this, thank you for the insight into your spending and savings. very interesting
@sportsbob Thank you!
Eating fast food is My Kryptonite and I've been trying to stick to a low spend a year recently. Every time I drive home from work I pass multiple chick-fil-a's, zeros, wendy's, McDonald's and Taco Bell's and I just keep talking myself out of it to drive home and focus on the long-term goal! Keep up the good work!
@brian7110 Avoiding fast food can be hard. It's addictive, too. Maybe bring a healthy snack for the drive home? You've got this!
I took out a retirement "loan" but the interest and payment pays me back. I just did a NW video and call it a grey area. But since the payment is automatically deducted from my paycheck, it leans onto the loan side. Thank you for sharing the NW. Nice job!
@frugaltofi that is exactly what my loan is like.Technically I owe it (to myself) but every payment towards it is actually a retirement contribution.
1.2m net worth, zero debts. Retired at 55 to Asia. Geo Arbitrage. Smarter not Harder 😊
Nice!
Bought too much house?. Downsize clear the debt........
I definitely bought too much house but it would cost way more to sell or downsize right now.
Hi Mrs K. Great bwm! 🎉🎉 for the 6k towards the roof! My son turns 5 this month, im just going to have a little sometbing at his school to save money instead of having a seperate party. Im finalizing my october budget now so i can get it recorded and uploaded early next week! I hope yall have a great weekend 😊
Thank you! I'm definitely planning to send cupcakes or something to daycare but I'm thinking of doing a family get together also. Good luck with your budget!
When my nephews turned 1, I set up an email for both of them. I send emails to them with little bits of information like what was going on in the world (kind of like a historical record for them ) what the family was up to , pictures of them and the whole family, friends, places,events etc... , info about activities we were doing, for example, I would send an email saying.... "Hello ___....today we went to the farm festival and you had so much fun, you fed the pigs and had some cotton candy "...... or.... prince Charles became king today or whatever, and so on..... when they turn 16, they will get the email account and discover hundreds of emails to browse through and see their history for the past 16 years. You can also encourage your family members to send their own emails as well.
@Bettypleasepickup that is such a sweet idea!
Awesome! 🤩 3 paycheck months are great! I set all my transfers automatically for my paycheck budget and everything came out today! 😅 Only one glitch, Fidelity pulls a day early so that was a little scary. I’ll have to switch the day to Monday instead of Friday.
It can take a little bit to get used to auto payments. So happy you set them up though!
You are killing that new roof fund! Great job. I must be on the same pay schedule as your husband as November will be a 3 paycheck month for me as well. I'm getting close to saving about 10K more this year than last year at this time, so trying to finish the year out strong. 🤞
Thank you! Great job building your savings!
I’m 50 and my husband is 54. Currently our net worth is 1.7 million. 1.2 million of that is in retirement accounts. I track out net worth monthly. We still have $180,000 left of our mortgage -that we hope to pay off before we retire. We are making extra payments and the interest rate is 2.75%. Sometimes it’s good to be old and have outstanding credit. 😉 We have $475,000 in equity, but we prefer to think of it as our place to live rather than an investment. I only track it in case of catastrophe. We have one kid in college right now that we support financially ( we did save a 529 for her) she has one more year and the money is almost gone. We have another daughter going in 2 years. She has a 529 as well. We spaced them out 5 years apart so we wouldn’t have to pay 2 day care fees but it worked out for college as well. 😂. Let me tell you a little secret. Our neighbors think we are broke. We don’t live flashy. If I picked up a rock and threw it I would hit boats, RV’s, 4 wheelers and multiple new cars that my neighbors have. We chose to invest instead of buy toys. Keep going. It pays off.
@loveandjoy810 That is so awesome! We definitely try to live below our means and invest as much as we can. Right now it's hard to add to our investments so I'm so happy we were contributing a lot the last 4 years because now we can take advantage of much more compounding.
Looking at NW to feel less bad about debt. Chuckle. We had $3M for a while. Thank you for sharing!
@7SideWays oof $3M. Our half million is stressful enough!
Thanks for sharing! 😊 I always find it fascinating what other people’s net worth is! I’m at 452k for retirement investments and 282k equity in my home. I’m 52 but started very late after raising 4 children and a divorce 7 years ago.
@cecciliaruns72 that's great progress!
Great video ! When we started our "baby steps " journey a few years ago, we had a negative net worth.😢😢😢 our total debt was 250,000, which consisted of 7 credit cards , 3 personal loans, a car payment, and a small mortgage. We are down to 4 credit cards , 1 personal loan, and a small mortgage . Our house value has increased while our mortgage has deceased , so our net worth is starting to be in the positive. It has been a long journey with more miles to go, but we are getting there !! 😊
Wow you are making such great progress!
@@kronsonfamily thank you🤗
Q: how old are you and your partner and how much do you have in your retirement accounts?
Hi @camdenmounts1473, I am 33 and my husband is 35. Sunday I'm publishing another networth video where I go over our August numbers. I went really in depth in my April networth video and our numbers are a little better now.
Love your videos ! We are trying to cut back on random grocery store trips. We were going almost every day, and it was getting out of hand because, of course when we didn't have a list, we bought way too much, and usually, it's stuff we really didn't need. I have tried to nail it down to Saturday morning, stock up shopping at Walmart, and ONE midweek quick run to Giant for milk , bread, and fresh fruits. But my husband is struggling with that a little 😂
Yes! Groceries are a huge struggle! It's great that you've made a plan. We keep a shared list in google keep so we can always add to it when we run out of something and look at it when we're at the store.
Good morning mrs k. Great transfers! That was interesting news about the fidelity investments!
Thank you @budgetfor5witStephanie Fidelity is so annoying that way. And they only recently allowed automatic investments into the Roth IRA. Previously you had to set up an automatic withdrawal from your bank account and then a separate automatic conversion from cash to your investments. Glad they updated that though for when we can get back to contributing to our Roth IRA.
