RS&S
Добавлен 17 май 2020
This is the RS&S (Railroad Signs and Signals) channel specifically dedicated to working on museum railroad crossing warning devices.
Please be aware that I am limited to what I can film on the active crossing signaling devices when it comes to showing what controls them and how they operate. I will try and cover as many details as I can about safety warning devices and how I identify and fix common problems I have with railroad crossings.

Love❤
The e bell type 2 sounds really nice and I think it's new too as well of those main lights on the right signal 2:07
Nice video and nice e bell combination
Well done! Fantastic job!
At 1:27 mark lights went out and came back on
Its the camera
2:58 bro i swear the crossing light is not working
Just LED's being weird on camera.
Hope we can talk im signal maintainer too
What’s the location?
Texas transportation museum, San antonio texas
Good videos
Hope we can talk I'm signal maintainer too
Love the clicking sound went in the crossings active
I wonder if you'll add side lights. I noticed the light bracket without lights installed
Not a priority at the moment. Currently about 30 main lights are needed for the new crossing installs before I can worry about the side cantilever lights.
You also need to clean the inside of it so it reflects more. I have a WCH 8” incandescent light and that’s what I needed to do because it was filthy when I got it, and not bright at all
Those mirrors are too far gone for any cleaning to help. Some of the red lenses had black paint on them and the mirrors reflective material was separating from the plastic.
Excellent video my friends 😊awesome 😮 fantatic Greeting 🙋🏻♂️ from Argentina 🇦🇷 suscribete New suscriptor ☝🏻😊
AL-70 🎉
Can u do a train pov version?
Eventually yes. I have to focus on new crossing and wayside installations at the moment. By Christmas time I will be able to record more of the train.
What happened to your backyard railroad crossing
That got pulled up a good 2 years ago. I think I still have the video up on the last time it operated.
Can you do the backyard rail road crossing the series again?
I can’t as those signals are no longer there.
What kind of flasher controller are you running? Flasher relays or an actual controller? Also, what are you using to terminate your track circuit?
The signals are operating on relay logic. The PMD-2 is jumpered to a remote switch at the moment. I might be converting the track circuit to either relay logic or short approach detector circuits. The track circuits have yet to be terminated but the wires have already been ran to where they are being terminated. They should be by January once the wayside signal system gets installed.
@@RailroadSignsandSignals I have a lot of PMD2s, very dependable, easy to work on but card replacement is pricey these days! I have a lot of flasher controls on relay logic but on the newer installs, SSCCIIIA are popular, that or XLC modules along with a VLG module! I have some terminated by NBS or DHWS
I have the double hard wire shunts installed and not the narrow band shunts as I don’t have any other track circuits intercepting my approahes and it is all jointed rail. My main concern is the length of the approaches. With less than 250 feet on either approach and the train speed never exceeding 5 MPH I don’t think it will be very reliable to have as a track circuit here. As for replacement cards that is no problem for me. For every card I have within the unit there is an extra one on standby. Have a workshop where I can fix the damaged boards as the backup ones are in use and then the repaired cards are placed as standby ones for the future. At this point in time it is the matter of terminating the jointed rails and figuring out what track circuit system and units will be most reliable for me to use.
@@RailroadSignsandSignals understandable! If there isn’t any overlapping circuits, a HWS or DHWS is the way to go! 250ft approach at max speed of 5 mph, do you have the joints bonded or double bonded? We have main and stby side’s working but when 1 card goes bad we either have to find a card or send it in for repair which takes some time and I know it isn’t cheap based on the RMAs I send in
Since everything I need to work on my crossings comes out of my own pocket I am planning on terminating single bond wires at each joint. If I have issues with them breaking often enough then I will invest in double bonded joints. I have had to teach myself from the ground up on how to wire everything up. Schematics, manuals, catalogs, old books, talking to retired maintainers and any railroad information I could get my hands on significantly helped in my understanding of maintaining signals of various kinds. I have to engineer schematics and layout plans after I have bought enough parts to start another installation, learn how to install operate and maintain the parts I will be using, schedule and plan installations, do the labor of digging and setting foundations and signals all by hand, wire and set up cabinets as well as maintaining what I have already installed. I do have the occasional volunteer that assists me but for the most part I have to do everything on my own. It has been one hell of an after work hobby for me but hopefully one day I will be working for a railroad company doing this.
Are the LEDs Leotek like CSX uses?
No clue. I don’t really pay attention to LED manufacturers.
Why is it just going back-and-forth
I edited the video a lot but the train does not make a loop as the property is not wide enough to do so. It has to go back and forth.
No amtrak for you mine.
Good job
I wish
New lights
Hopefully this is the last question I ask about signal stuff. If you remember, what size conduit did you use on your Safetran gated signals? I have 1” PVC conduit underground from what was going to be my gateless signal, but im not sure if that’s big enough.
I am installing 1 1/4 pipe to the signal for my AL-70 project. You can use whatever size you may want as long as the wires you run have enough space but the larger the conduit the easier it is to pull wire through. The railroad generally uses 4 inch conduit or rarely 3 inch for some installs.
just curious is the black diesel strong enough to active the railroad crossing?
As long as a train has at least one pair of wheels and a solid axel it will activate the crossings. It is not by weight but by shunting the 2 rails.
@ does it have those things on the diesel?
@@rodgodx345yeah, any rail car or engine has them.
@@Indianarailproductions oh okay
So this is prove the railroad crossing works and it was a success!
Love these LED's hopefully soon the pedestrian crossing gets LED lights installed
That signal will remain incandescent for a long time. Even if I received more LED modules I have more crossings with greater priorities now that I have 4 separate crossing setups in the works with 2 more on the way.
@RailroadSignsandSignals Oh ok
Why them train driver be messing with the gate at the crossing it does makes your job harder right when someone mess them up
One will naturally want to fix the issue instead of sending another person out to fix the issue, especially if they don’t know that they are making it harder for the one who has to come out and look at it. I do respect that they made a decision to try and fix the issue but they didn’t take into consideration that I have to see the problem actively happening in order to diagnose and fix the problem.
That's nice installation a push button that actves the crossing
2:29 where’d u get the P2 from?
P2?
@ the horn on the locomotive?
@caltrain_acefoamer907 as far as I know, everything is original on that train. I don’t deal with trains so I am not knowledgeable about them.
why do the lights fade in and out sometimes?
During day time cause the camera do that at these Railroad crossings on the streets and main highways that has LED's flashing lights
This is caused by LED modules operating on AC current. The shutter speed just about matches the LEDs flickering which is not present when viewed in person. I have done a video on this too.
the lights are flashing its the stupid camera itself making it look like its fade in and out.
I love your videos man and where are you based in again is it san Antonio right
Yes.
@RailroadSignsandSignals ah ok that's what I thought I was not for sure
I always thought that it was Indiana lol
@@dancline2143 lol
@@dancline2143I wish it was lol, our railroad museums aren’t the greatest
First
The leds suck they are just so bad
If you turn on the railroad crossing it will call and train
Enjoyed the vid 👍
i come across that before while i was drivin on the expressway & them damn things the fuckin gate would lower & raise & lower & raise & them lights flashin like hell & every damn thing else. i didnt know wtf to do. i said "motherfucker is there a fuckin train comin or not!?"
5:10 My favourite railroad crossing light.
the main Lights On The Pedestrian gate I feel like you got those lights from your backyard but you put incandescent
The regular 3rd single regular light gate should be have no gates just lights on it.
Are they automatically controlled by the approaches on the track or controlled via remote
Very cool! Even with the caboose!
Nice Crossing Setup! Fun Fact: My favorite bell is the NEG with the General Signals Type 2
I guess the costume locomotive is stronger enough to activate the crossing lol
Like the video but it sucks the bells turn off when the gates are down
Them LED crossing lights and gate light are bright
Nice video to see the train passing by
At least the LED crossing lights are not flickering
What kind of events they were having at the museum
It was the annual Halloween event.
And great video 👌😎
Are you going to use the wabco gate mechanism one day
That project is still in the works. I cannot promise anything but hopefully by Christmas time I will have that signal up and running.
Great video man and at 1:30 in the video was a great occurrence because I heard a train horn in the distance just in time for the activation
