Summer 85
Добавлен 11 сен 2013
Hi there! My name is Andrey.
I'm obsessed with creating retro 3D graphics, inspired by the style of PS1 and the games on my first PC, which I got in 2000. For many years before I worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, but now I went on a new adventure that is really exciting for me.
I create low-poly graphics and animations in Blender, drawing textures in Photoshop and want to get closer to game development.

PS1 Style Animated Heart in Blender / Low poly / Texture Painting (Timelapse)
While I'm working on my first endless tutorial, I decided to make something not too complex, so you know I'm still alive.

Haili LM-888 - unofficial hardware clone of Famicom made in China which was widespread in the post-soviet countries. There were many other clones of various shapes and colors, but my parents gave me this one in 1995. In this project I tried to draw low resolution texture (I don't know if this can be classified as pixel art?) completely from scratch and model a set of elements that were in the b...
Polaroid in Low Poly PS1 style (Blender Timelapse)

I just wanted to create something from the past, and the idea of Polaroid came to mind. I know it was once popular, but my parents didn't have it when I was a kid. In this video I tried to imagine as if we had this camera. When I painted the texture I limited myself to 128x128 px to make it look similar to the PS1 style. Hope you enjoy this nostalgia. The music is so beautiful. (What is it, by the way?) The heart model is also very cool. I can imagine this being something in a game's ending.
Thank you! There are three different sound tracks playing in the video. This is copyright music from artlist.io. Which one are you you interesting in?
Do you work in 3d ? How did you learn the skill ?
Yes, I'm trying, but it's just a hobby for now. It takes a lot of practice. There are many useful tutorials on RUclips.
Love your work ! Nicely done :)
Thanks! Glad you liked it
nice work👊
Thank you! 👊
Can you feel my heart!😂
Don't Waste 🫀 Your Time 😭
Exactly!
So as for me, heart without textures would be so much better. But it's also cool
Nice
Cool👌
Great job, how much time did it take you in total?
Thank you! About a week. Timelapse recording and video editing probably takes up half of the entire work.
Do you use a drawing pad for texture painting?
I use a regular graphics tablet - Wacom Intuos 4.
@ thanks :) do you recommend it?
@@Phiko54 I think any tablet will do for this task
Love it! Good job
Thank you!
Great job as always!
Thanks for watching and feedback!
So gross, but so good
Thanks! I tried to make it so
Did you use tablet or mouse for painting? Btw Great work.
Thank you! I usually use tablet for something more compicated like classic painting with smooth transitions in colors and mouse for drawing by pixels.
hey! i have a question, how do u select exactly the faces u wanna move on te uvs without marking seams? also how do you joing two dfferent ojects in the same uv map amazing work btw !!
Thank you. glad you like it! What about selecting faces, you just need to switch to face select at the top left, if I understand you right (or let me know time code for this action). As for the joining the uv elements, you need to change Increment to Vertex in Snapping (magnetic at the top), then move one element to other while holding Control.
Where do you get your images that you use as textures/references?
In this project, almost all textures are drawn from scratch by me. But if I need, for example, wood textures, I just search for images on the Internet.
I'm working on an indie game right now and it's so easy to get burnout while learning literally everything to make one, but seeing videos like this keep me motivated, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your feedback! I'm so glad to know that this inspires you.
how'd you do the snow?
I did it following one tutorial on RUclips
Amazing and inspiring work. It is especially interesting that you create your textures before modeling, rather than painting over the UVs or using a 3D painting workflow. Are there any advantages that you find from working this way?
Thank you! This sequence is probably more convenient if the object has a simple shape. At the same time, it’s more convenient for me to extrude something using a ready-made texture. Overall I would say it all depends on the situation.
Amazing work! Really inspirational
Thank you!
I really want to learn how to use Blender to make models in this style, do you have any tips on how to get started?
I'm working hard on a big tutorial about it and I hope that this will answer many questions. But this won't happen tomorrow, so I can only recommend tutorials from others creators for now. Try the RUclips channel of Stark Crafts.
So calming 😌
Family Game 9999999 in 1 <3
Love how it looks a bit warbly. Really does a good job at capturing that ps1 vibe.
Glad you like it! I tried
Very VERY nice! Though, I would say its more akin to a psp game or maybe late 90s/early 2000s pc game. Still, I love the low poly/low res texture look. I recently got into blender and hope to be able to finish projects that look like this. Very inspiring!
Thanks! Yeah, this is probably something looks like PS 1.5 :) Glad it's inspiring. Good luck with your project!
I got inspired by your video and I'm working on something similar myself. Did you do everything in Blender, or did you import all the assets into Unity and build the environment there?
Thank you for feedback! Everything in Blender. I haven't learned any game engine yet. Good lick with your project!
awesome...
Nice job Hello, do you have an adresse mail i have a question for you?
I'd be interested to see if scenes like this could actually be rendered on PS1 hardware/an emulator. The textures are low res, but the models aren't exactly small. The graphical limitations of the PS1 were WAY tighter than developers were given credit for being able to innovate with. I think what you've made here closer represents early PS2 graphics/models more-so than PS1.
Yes, I agree. Recently, I've been playing PS1 games again, and it’s becoming more and more clear to me that the graphics back then were even simpler-at least with an even lower resolution. On the other hand, if the PS1 era had lasted a few more years, I think we would have seen even more amazing examples of games. It seems to me that the PS1's potential wasn’t fully realized. Remember the manta and dinosaur models from the demo disc-that’s a completely different level compared to the graphics in most games.
@Summmer85 There's a really cool documentary on here where the developer of Crash Bandicoot 1 talks about what he had to do to squeeze every ounce of power he could out of the chips on the PS1. It's fascinating. He went right down to the assembly language level to "steal" power from parts of the system that weren't supposed to be accessible to the game ROM's.
@@m.w.4508 Yeah, I watched this video, it's very interesting
How did you add snow?
Its hard to explain in the comment. I did this by following one tutorial on RUclips.
Hello! Great work, a pleasure to watch. A quick question: How do you stack and merge similar UV islands?
Hello, Thanks for feedback! First, you need to change Increment to Vertex in Snapping (at the top left) and then you'll be able to stack similar faces while holding Control. Hope it help
@@Summmer85 Great! Thank you very much and have a nice day :)
can you make a tutorial kn how to move the camera like that in ps1 games for beginners? 🫡💌
Thank you for your question! Maybe I'll make a tutorial about it, but not anytime soon, as I'm currently working on my first tutorial about room assets. I usually use a simple animation, set the camera on the circle via Follow Path and I assign a tracking point to the camera in the form of Empty or any object. I set it all up in Object Constrant Properties.
Anyone knows how he got the windows to emit light/stand out like that? 6:20
Figured it out. You basically mix the Emission node with the texture and that's it. Then you just add point lights.
@@Krucek_v2 need separate material with emission, which assigned to specific faces (window in this case)
Where did you get the texture sheet from?
I collected it myself from a different images founded in the internet. Nothing special.
Do you have any plans to release a tutorial on how you make the textures and 3D models? I love your art style!
@@DCalzzetta Thanks for your question! I've been periodically working on a big detailed tutorial for about 3 months now. This will be a whole room with objects, including a plant in this low poly retro style. The process was very delayed due to the lack of experience in creating tutorials and my weak English. But I've already done quite a lot, and I'll definitely want to finish it as soon as possible.
@@Summmer85 I understand you perfectly, English is not my native language either. I followed you on Instagram. Please post when you have something. I will be happy to be one of your first students. Good luck!
@@DCalzzetta Thank you very much! See you in the class :)
This is sooo dope. Do you remember the render settings for this project?
Hi, there is nothing special. Just some nodes in Compositing for pixelated view.
@@Summmer85 Well it's absolutely beautiful!
this is great, definitely going to use your work as reference for some of my low poly stuff
Thanks for feedback! Glad it was helpful for you
U SKIPPED THE SNOW????????????
???
@@Summmer85 show me where you add the snow in the video
Stop playing
@@billygate4063 I didn't record the process of making snow.
you're very talented
Hey, thanks for such a helpful guide! I have one question that I can't find an answer to anywhere, it would be great if you could help Do you make sure that textures have the same number of pixels? If so, what do you focus on when changing the size of each texture when you put it in one texture pack? I've also seen some people make a separate UV for each item, but I don't think that's quite optimal if you assume that these textures will be used in the game.
Hi, thank you for your feed back and question! In fact, I didn't really bother about this. In some cases, I changed the size of the texture as it looked on the model, jumping from blender to photoshop several times. Probably, first of all, you should take into account the size of a particular asset and allocate appropriate space for it on UV-map. Lately I've been mostly drawing a separate texture for each object (separate file). I'm currently working on detailed tutorial about this style of graphics. I thought I would finish it earlier, but it took so long.
@@Summmer85 In general, as I understand it, you make an approximate texture size everywhere, focusing on other objects, textures and UV, right?
@@mackastart5382 Yeah! You can try working with different resolution options and try to reduce it over time, if you like it of course. For me it’s like an art, the ability to fit a whole model into a small space. But it takes time and some experience
@@Summmer85 Now I understand, thank you so much!
How did you project from view the plane/cube ? I select all , going front view and "uv project from view", the front face and down face is good, side ones are blurry
Project from view assumes that the side faces will not be unwrapped properly - this is normal. In some cases I ignore unwrapping of some faces, if it is not important in the scene.
You don't work with Ambient Occlusion baked?
Hi, thank you for your question! If I understand right, you are talking about baked shadows? I tried to master it, but I didn't succeed. I even found a text tutorial about this, but after doing everything step by step, I could not achieve the desired result. I also tried soft named xNormal, but something didn't work out for me with this either.
Amazing tutorial, I want to learn to make assets like that for my game. Btw, where do you get your textures?
Thanks! Mostly this is just a photo from google, modified in photoshop. But lately I've been trying to create textures myself.
@@Summmer85 Oh thats cool! Yeah Ive thought of taking pictures of stuff to use as textures as well but I always forget..
Hey man I'm current developer (not game dev) but do game dev as a hobby. Would it be possible to connect with you on how to create my own assets in this style? I can already effectively model low-poly in blender but working with UVs and textures is much newer for me.
Hey I just got into blender and this randomly showed up after watching a tutorial and it motivated me to keep going so I just wanted to say thank you. <3
Oh, you are welcome! There are many interesting things ahead for you.
@@Summmer85 Same reason why I subbed to you as well. Your low poly animations really inspire me!
@@Old_Man_Jay Glad you like it! Thank you for letting me know!

Hi, for such manipulation you need enable "Correct Face Attribute". In Edit mode, go to top-right and click "Option (under Viewport Shading) to find it.
