Ableton Live's Secret Comping Feature
I love Ableton, but it's lack of built-in comping a la Logic Pro and ProTools has always been a sorely missed feature...until I figured out a way to do it!
The secret is in exploiting the relationship between the session view and the arrangement view.

Producing Beats Live on Twitch l ABLETON LIVE l June 21, 2020

Just jamming on Twitch. Came up with some cool beats. I've been testing out a custom workflow for my APC40 that will allow me to work faster, enhance tactile control, etc. I may make some videos on how to do just that.

Heard this and decided to remake it while wearing all important PPE. The app I'm using for the iPad is called Touchable Pro. It turns your iPad into a pretty solid Ableton controller. I'm surprised I don't see it around more. Anyway, enjoy the video, and let me know in the comments if you'd be interested in a tutorial or a piano cover of this song.
XO vs Atlas: Which is the better Drum Sample Organizer?
Просмотров 34 тыс.4 года назад
If you produce music, chances are you have amassed libraries upon libraries of drum samples, and your starting to lose track of what you have. I recently came across two plugins that compile and organize all of my sample libraries automatically, detecting their kind and tone, and visually grouping them into "maps." Here I shoot them out head to head and give you my take on them. If you want to ...

    I was really set on atlas 2 but I wanted to make sure I was getting the best plugin overall. I even tested out both of them, and I felt like atlas 2 is more for the common enjoyer of a music fan. While XO felt more professional and geared towards producers. With all the research I’ve done XO is the better plugin, personally. But I still loved atlas 2 for its bright colors and the random generator, it felt so lively while XO looks dead lol.

      It all depends. I decided to go for both. Both platforms enhances the workflow speed in which ever DAW you work in.

    Atlas has one of the best features out there. CREATES A RANDOM KIT WITH THE CLICK OF A BUTTON. It eliminates the entire, time consuming process of going snare by snare, kit by kit. It became one of the starting points in my personal template.

    Great comparison! Is XO limited to 8 lanes, while Atlas starts with 4x4 grid up to 8x8? It looks like neither have a mixer? Not a deal breaker for me as I prefer to mix in my DAW. The cloud or bubble browser and kit maker are cool concepts. I was using ADSR Sample Manger (free) and probably will continue as more than 40% of my samples are non-drum, but 60% are and either XO or Atlas 2 would be awesome. 😀

      @thomaslinder6299 2 года назад

      While I really dig XO's sophisticated search functions, like "Drumminess" ratios, and convenient Export options, I'm leaning toward Atlas, because it's 8x8, has a better sequencer (imo), handles MIDI import/export (as opposed to audio) fairly intuitively, and the biggest pro for me: doesn't require me to buy yet another sample library. The last thing I need is more samples. If XO provided it's library functions without the sample library, I could imagine using it...it's Drumminess algorithm alone is worth $$.

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG 2 года назад

      @@thomaslinder6299 Thx! I recently bought XO but I’m going to try the Atlas 2 trial. I own about 7 drum software applications and have trials or free versions of 8 more = total 15. I appreciate your honesty. I find all drum software sequencers inferior to the sequencer/step editor in my DAW. Multiple producers have told my they start with the drum seq to develop beats, then drag the midi into their DAW for further editing and control, often with multiple tracks/instances of the same drum app. In 1 case I noticed the sequencer in DrumComputer by Sugar Bytes seems really good, but it’s a drum synth not a drum sampler. I considered using DrumComputer, exporting the midi to execute XO samples… “what am I doing?” Crazy! Perhaps no 1 app does everything for everybody.

    XO has an amazing beat&sound editing interface as well so the presets arent just presets you can edit them or create new ones. It was just in the edit tab. You actually can create quite complex patterns and even edit the sounds youd picked with fxs filters etc its amazing. its actually such a underrated software that im always surprised that no ones talking about it

    Hey, Scott- thank you so much for the great tutorial! As a long-time gig/session musician myself, and now as a home studio composer/producer, anything that saves me time, especially saving lots of time, is great! Comping is just one such massive time saver- but you've proven that you don't have to skimp on quality (if done properly, as in your impromptu piece), which also is very important. I really enjoyed your ad hoc jam, here, which clearly demonstrates your talent as well as this great feature of Abelton. It also sounds completely un-like a computer/robot production from a lab, somewhere. It grooves, it fits together nicely, sounds completely natural, and isn't quantized-to-death. LOL! As a years-long Cubase, Studio One user myself, and normally doing songs and entire film/video scores, I have decided to take a second look at Ableton Live to help me produce more, and in less time, and this is one great feature that gets my attention. Once again, saving time- or better stated- maximizing time, is crucial for maximum output of maximum quality, while keeping the creativity/inspiration flowing. Thank you again, for the great video, and I wish you all the best on your personal music adventures. I'll try a demo of Ableton Live and check it out. Side Note: I know that Cubase and Studio One also have comping features, and they both are great DAWs in many ways, but they still are a bit of a pain to work with on long stretches, and what you were able to do here, with the great quality of the final product, and in a fraction of the time it normally would take in those other DAWs, proves the worth of Ableton as more than just a loop/live program. Bravo! Ableton- hire this man! (:
