    Psycho analysis makes more sense as we age and experience cycles of real life. Everything is a symbol that leads to universal themes or patterns. Depending on how, where, and when we are raised as humans, certain symbolism will repeat or have a stronger meaning at certain times of your life. These topics are not someone’s interpretation but personal experience or observations over decades of time in particular societies. What spoke to a group of people during the time the author writes about them should always be taken into consideration. Also it’s natural some things won’t make sense now but decades later they will because you lived the experience. These are massive teachings that take a lifetime to digest. Keep this in mind with Jungian analysis and legends like Joseph Campbell who worked with Jung. They are legendary for a reason. Go deep everyone ❤

      Thanks for this! I've continued to study psychoanalysis myself and have some exciting videos planned about how i see psychoanalysis and writing as intersecting, but as you write-- child development and symbolism inform the human experience so much, it makes sense that we let them inform our writing for a richer/deeper story!

    10:37 Abundance paradoxically doesn't encourage equality. Areas with scarce resources give rise to egalitarian societies because having the cooperation of the group is more valuable than whatever you could get if you acted selfishly. A lot of the hunter-gather cultures that remain today live in places that are very difficult to live in, so you see this type of social structure arise there. The less you have to rely on others for survival the more independent you can be, and the more inequality arises between people with more or less ability to thrive in the environment they're in. Then those people who have more can offer surplus to others in exchange for doing their bidding to seize even more and oh look, you have an aristocracy. Communism is therefore incentivized to encourage or engineer scarcity, because it exerts development pressure toward equality and solidarity. The PRC did not immediately collapse after the devastating loss of life caused by the policies of The Great Leap Forward because it's a feature, not a bug. Not that I think they intentionally caused one of if not the worst famine in human history, rather that the conditions imposed by the famine reinforced their ideals. Another type of civilization would not have perpetuated itself when faced with the same pressure.

    • @All.Things.Elliot
      @All.Things.Elliot 4 месяца назад

      I don't know that I entirely agree with you. Abundant resources that are impossible to hoard are much more difficult to monetize, or make useful to only a subset of the population-- if abundant and accessible, then it is necessarily shared. But really, regardless of this detail, the bigger picture is to consider how the environment might be a major contributing factor to culture. The benefit of being an author is you can write one contingent (fantasy) history, without needing to 'prove' it as a universal law!

    It's a nice video and an excellent topic. There is a lot of nuance to this and people devote lifetimes to studying Marx, Hegel, and their specific relationship. Covering a topic like this is ambitious and you open yourself up to a lot of critique. That said, here is mine: Firstly, you are talking about historicism (the 'directionality' and narrative of history), not historiography (the study of different writers' biases as caused by their temporal idiosyncrasies). It is not 'labour conditions' that Marx talks about but the mode of production specifically. The difference is crucial in that Marx's philosophy was not pure (vulgar) materialism, but _dialectical materialism_. He did not rule out the role that ideas and cultural movements impact history, he just holds that their source is the external, material reality. The mode of production is a lot deeper than labour conditions because it transforms consciousness itself. Marxism isn't as simple as 'cheap commodities allow you to do different things,' it's an exploration of how we see and relate to objects and people, as defined by the material wants and needs respective to them. Nature is absolutely central to Marx's work, for Marx nature is the root of all value, and therefore of consciousness. He writes about this extensively. Marx was not a determinist, for Marx humans had subjectivity. No Marxist philosopher would claim that cultures are predestined by the environment, rather that they have a _dialectical relationship_ i.e. conditions change culture which changes conditions etc.. Similarly, Hegelianism (or rather Hegelian historicism) cannot be reduced to 'people and ideas motivate history'. Hegel writes in a very obscure style, so it is difficult to summarise accurately what he intended, but in general he writes about people and ideas as _expressions of a world idea-spirit_, or a 'nation-spirit'. For Hegel, societies had subjectivities which can express themselves through institutions or individuals, but individual subjectivities or institutions do not motivate history (that would again be more of a vulgar materialist perspective). For an idealist, the fundamental reality is pure concepts - consciousness itself - not institutions. Again, I think this is a great video and you have a lot of cool ideas about worldbuilding. The conclusions you have come to are very understandable from and anglo-saxon humanist perspective, but Marx and Hegel specifically are not humanists and have a lot of depth and nuance. I think you are talking more about about materialism and idealism in general. Apologies if this comes across harshly! I like the video and hope you keep up the good work.

    • @All.Things.Elliot
      @All.Things.Elliot 7 месяцев назад

      You're right that I'm definitely talking about materialism and idealism more generally- I didn't talk about dialectics, or dialectic materialism, though those are obviously central to Marx, and I didn't get into a lot of the stuff that Marx says about capital or about some of his ideas about culture (I cannot get his ideas about the 'community of women' out of my head). I'm definitely not going to be writing the histories of these two great thinkers! But that being said, I do think what I've summarized are directions that humanists have taken their works--which is often, as you point out, a bit reductionist! Hope you keep following for some of my upcoming videos-- I'll see if I can get a bit more specific about movements vs. thinkers.

    • @bogusthompson
      @bogusthompson 7 месяцев назад

      @@All.Things.Elliot Thank you for your reply! By community of women do you mean that one section of the manifesto? Why does that stay in your head?

  • @aryalamge3778
    @aryalamge3778 7 месяцев назад

    Great video! I want to add a comment and ask a question. Marx was one of the last system builders and it is instrumental to utilise historical materialism and dialectics in writing, particularly fiction. My question is amid worldbuilding, how do we craft interactions of the characters amongst themselves in that world. Are there any useful tools that can help us chart these interactions?

    • @All.Things.Elliot
      @All.Things.Elliot 7 месяцев назад

      Yes! Good point about system building/ that's probably why I always think of him with world building as a writer! I think one question to ask is how much influence your characters have on their world-- the interactions between the world and the character will probably depend on how much agency the character has to change their situations--of course maybe your character is learning that they DO have that power (I'm thinking a character like Katniss, who starts out very dominated by her world, and ends up revolutionizing it on her own terms)--so that's one way to think about it. BUt another way, a firmly materialist way, would be to consider how your world (and the specific cultural place and moment of your character) informs them-- the scope of your characters imaginations and wishes should probably be informed by their world and its limitations. (Now i'm getting a bit into Foucault and epistemes, but there's something marxist in it I think, in terms of limitations).

    • @All.Things.Elliot
      @All.Things.Elliot 7 месяцев назад

      Do you have any ideas for how you might think about these interactions that I didn't mention?

    • @AdamAguiar10
      @AdamAguiar10 7 месяцев назад

      Another more firmly marxist way to craft these interactions is to root them in material conditions and consider how different characters' interests would interact with each other. According to Marx, people are separated into classes because of their relation to the means of production, and these classes have different interests. A simple example is that people who own factories have a material desire for longer working hours and lower pay, while the people who work at those factories desire the exact opposite. So when crafting your world, as Elliot said, consider how your characters relate to the material conditions of the world, but also consider how these people would interact with other groups of people who have a different relationship with the material world.

    Although Campbell had some brilliant ideas, he also had some stupid ideas, many that he got from Psychoanalysis. Statistically PA doesn’t work. In one study, housewives who just listened and said nothing at all got better results than psychoanalysts who interpreted. Having someone listening non-judgmentally helps you think. PA interpretation is BS, duh. Campbell also absorbed some sexist ideas from the male dominated culture. This is ironic because out-of-body experiences tend blow out that fixation on what sort of genitalia (or skin color) one has. He spoke a great deal about mysticism in ancient writings but had limited if any direct experience in that area. You just have to separate the wheat from the chaff.

    Would love to watch a video on how semiotics have changed. And also, eastern vs western semiotics - especially the Indian use of semiotics. Thanks for the video! Very well explained. You are my first search result in my quest to learn what semiotics is.

    • @All.Things.Elliot
      @All.Things.Elliot Год назад

      Oh very cool! Yes there are so many angles from which to consider semiotics. I'll add this to my list of videos to make. But if you're looking for books to read I like Alfred Gell who does more art-history type semiotics, and Umberto Eco, who is one of the older authors on the topic. You might also look into some work on structuralism and anthropology-- you might google Clifford Geertz on signs, culture, and structuralism!

    There's laws against child pornography for a reason and I think that once depictions graphic sex in Y.A becomes prevalent this kind of creates a moral dilemma of where the f**k do we cross the line between this s**t and child pornography?

    • @All.Things.Elliot

      I appreciate that dilema. do you think it matters that in fiction, there's no child 'victim' (vs photography or other forms of abuse on real live children?).

      @@All.Things.Elliot To be fair I haven't really read too many Y.A novels lately so I don't know how Y.A novel typically authors do that stuff nowadays.I know that the gravity of something which has used,exploited and victimized actual children is different from something which contains fake versions of children however the idea of graphic sex between teen characters in Y.A is not something which I am comfortable with because even though I wouldn't techically be exploiting children by writing something like that I would feel like I am still providing jerk off material to people who have a preference for a certain type of sexual behavior which is harmful and kind of encouraging those people to want to go out and do that crap with actual children as well as feeding into those fantasy's.I'm not judging anybody for writing what they write or saying that they are bad people or that everybody who reads such things are bad but I am still not personally comfortable with such stuff.I don't personally feel as if I am a judgemental person and I don't personally feel as if saying I am uncomfortable is in any way shape or form judgemental.

      Hah! That's a funny way to put it! But It wasn't a query in that i didn't expect her to 'accept me'. It was a query *critique-- an opportunity to learn more about the querying process from an agent, and to learn more about places I could level up my writing from someone in the publishing industry. I thouhgt of it more as like a mini private writing class than a real attempt to query! And while certainly not necessary, and I don't think I'd do it again, I think for where I was in my writing journey, it was a good way to learn a lot quickly that it might have taken me a long time to learn on my own.

    I’ve never heard of anybody paying for advice from a agent. It’s a known fact that these people turn down 99% of people. You are wasting your time with these people. I was told that what they were looking for was somebody who can write a series. Believe me they’re are not looking for anything. It appears to me that they’re protecting their clients from other authors. I’ve published four children’s books this year. The cost is £2000. Per book. Children’s books are amongst the most expensive especially the ones with colour illustration. The best way to do things is to not bother listening to these agents. Save up and publish the book yourself. You will retain all rights. If you go by a traditional publisher, you’ll be lucky to get a anything back. Once you get published ,hire a PR marketing company. This eliminates any need for an agent. The marketing company will try to get you noticed in newspapers and television.

      I totally agree that self-pub works for some people, but it all depends on the author's interest, and the book's genre etc. Also, absolutely, paying for a query package review is by no means necessary for people aspiring to Trad-pub. JUst as a degree in english isn't necessary or having a CP group isn't necessary. but it can be valuable if it's something the writer is interested in. And these query paackage reviews are a fairly common practice at conferences where agents attend. I found it worthwhile, particularly as I was just starting to get into writing and had just finished my first full length novel. The feedback helped me refine the entire novel, not just that package, And I learned a lot that i've taken forward into other projects. But I absolutly agree it wasn't necessary and I don't know if I'll do it again.

    Such a fun topic to think about. We've been writing all throughout school, but at what point did we decide to put our more creative ideas on paper? We all have our own starts with "I want to do this". I have always daydreamed about imaginary worlds, but I decided that when I was going off to college I wanted to collect my ideas. These started mostly as a few scenes here and there and evolved into a full series.

    My darling publisher describes her shouty books as very much like a song that gets stuck in her head until she scribbles it out in paper and ink. In my own writing, I feel a bit like Ishmael in Moby Dick: an unremarkable character surrounded by remarkable ones who are too busy doing cool stuff to tell their own stories.
