DIY remote control hack of tennis ball machine
$30 hack for installing a remote kit to a Lobster tennis ball machine.
Here’s the link to my blog with details. errytingido.blogspot.com/2020/11/diy-remote-hack-of-tennis-ball-machine.html?m=1
It’s simple but also complicated.
Update June 1, 2024. Due to reduced range (under 20’) even with a fresh battery in the remote, I took off the control panel and pulled out the receiver. The antenna was stretched out properly, but I didn’t know what configuration it took. Once I pushed the wires and the receiver into the machine. With the antenna exposed, I turned the machine on and observed that the range exceeded 60’. I attached the receiver to the shell of the ball machine and past the antenna th...

Lobster ball machine fix--from too often to just right

My new Lobster Elite Liberty tennis ball machine could only deliver balls every 1 to 6 seconds rather than 2 to 12 seconds as published on the company webpage. Hardest part was stripping the wire ends 🙂worked like a charm. The thing I like is, I can turn it off completely with the remote and save battery. Again, THANK YOU so much for this great idea, as I have own this machine since 2016, Lobster wants $185.00 + tax + shipping, my remote from Amazon was $16.99, wires $4.60 and the little clamp was $0.46. This is awesome stuff. Very clear. I have another machine and will be trying this out and looking to replicate what you did on a different board, as well as making a remote controlled external oscillator for it to sit on. Question-- have you ever figured out why there's a delay with the feed motor, or how to modify how long it takes on start up? Mine is similar at about 8-10 seconds after startup. If I have a transmitter to power on the machine, I think it'd be ideal to reduce it to about 2-3 seconds. It doesn't seem to do the delay when I power it back on immediately after turning it off. I was thinking some kind of capacitor or something, but was wondering if you had messed with yours at all. Thanks a lot for recording this!

    • @paddlepower888
      @paddlepower888 6 месяцев назад

      You're kind with the compliment. As a shallow end mechanic and diy-er, I don't know how to assess the various pieces on the control board of my Lobster, with its 20 second delay. A capacitor sounds like a trick the engineers used, so if you could ID that item on the board and replace it with something of lower delay value, you'll get to the promised land early! Cheers!

    • @maxjones2008
      @maxjones2008 6 месяцев назад

      @@paddlepower888 that was my thought too. I'm an engineer by school but not Electrical. If I end up messing with it I'll give you a message! I've found all these ball machines are about the same tech but the price depends on the size and branding.

    • @maxjones2008
      @maxjones2008 5 месяцев назад

      @@paddlepower888 Follow up on this- I isolated the power wire to the board, and the wire that feeds power to the delivery motor, like you did. Your mileage may vary with a Lobster, but with my delivery motor, one of the two motor wires is connected to the power switch assembly (as expected), and the other connects to the board. The one that connects to the board is located next to some kind of small microcontroller, which likely has some code loaded to it to control the delivery motor starting. I think this rules out being able to get rid of the delay between powering on and the delivery motor beginning. Maybe someone else will come along that's smarter than me and correct me.

      I usually don't have the ball machine further from me than about 40 feet/13 meters--I place it at the service line on the other side of the net for practicing volleys. For ground strokes, I have it on my side of the net. One thing I hadn't done is to push the antenna through a hole drilled in the outer shell of the ball machine. I'm tempted to do that as it sometimes doesn't respond at 40 feet.

    Great job on the DIY setup, two things however, a few pairs of lugs on the wire or even just tinning the leads with solder for the uber cheap fix, will do amazing things for the longevity/ safety of your setup. For instance, your AC input- line (My guess from looking at it) looks like it has a few strands that have popped out of the clamp and are flared out, to prevent issues and or electrical risks, terminate the ends before installing on the clamp. Likewise on the DC side near the motors red wire, you have a crimped lug, but just a few inches away you have another twisted exposed lead, the movement in the motor assy could cause a bad connection and with an available 360watts of power you could burn something or melt the wiring during use if it get comes loose a little. But the basis is there for the average DIYer. I motorized my CLM with the covid relief check when they first sent them out, best thing I have done to my mill yet. I bought the mill back in 2007 and used it often but like you said, manual operation will work but it sucks. With the CLM provided setup, I found it only draws 62watts during operation using a kill-a-watt to measure load. Considering I have a few different solar generators and even a ARFcom battery pack I built from their DIY section, I can keep the mill running for all of my uses even during a grid down situation. Again great job and happy grinding brother.

    could you have just gone direct drive? What is the benefits of gearing it?

    • @paddlepower888
      @paddlepower888 Год назад

      The inspiration for my kit was a video made by Cincinnatus Again whose adaptation was direct drive. In the comments below his video he notes that he upgraded to a more powerful motor-Direct drive requires more power. Mine wouldn’t drive the mill when I connected directly to the mill-more likely related to the weak 5 amp power supply I bought the first time. If the connection to the mill shaft isn’t perfect, the kit needs a flexible motor mount to operate properly-a bit easier to design if belt driven. Gearing down reduces the rotation speed and the power needed to turn the mill. Mine turns the mill pulley at 27 rpm. Decreased motor strain may lead to longer motor life.

    I like the basic idea, but I dislike relying on specialized and/or expensive items (like carbon fiber poles). I try to stick with gear which can be purchased in person somewhere and also gear which is repairable. I don't know one way or other how this system rates on those two points. Blue would be my very last choice of color btw as it involves the most rapid degradation from sun exposure.

      EXACTLY! BUT -- If you're just starting out to learn the Kick, Great! 👆 A lot of players Don't even try/have this at the 4.0-4.5 level. You keep this up, about another 30 - 40 carts, and you'll have it! You got the clearance down great, now just loosen your arm and brush up/lean into it, and Voila'. One more thing: Dude, the fact that you're out there, After a seeming rain, on your own, I'll putt Money on you getting this kick Down (Pun intended! 😄).

    Wow very good kick serve! Lots of height and spin on the ball, nice job! ;) subscribed You might enjoy my channel, I am also a tennis player!

    very nice kick, Jeff! I'd recommend you throw the ball into the court and you get under it (vs you arch your back to possibly injure your back) to hit UP and OUT. what you need now is to bring your body into the court to create the forward momentum to bring the ball down and make it *kick* to the side. Great job making the ball fly for sure! love it.

      Thanks! You are too kind! Amazingly 11 months have passed. I have dozens of hours of butterfly drills under my belt. In this clip, I might look good to some, but I do look like I'm trying to go into a low earth orbit with each breath. My stroke efficiency suffered from little deficiencies in technique, inducing me to breathe every stroke.
