Jesus, this is so cool.
Wow mel bay memories first time i met my dad at 15 he gave me a les paul jr and mel bay books
Satch is so humble.
I got my son and I tickets to an upcoming Satch and Vai show. I have never seen them live and I got us good seats. I’m so freaking excited!! 🥲🥲
Definitely 2 legends right here!🤘
SatVai Weekend 🤘🏽
This is the closest we'll ever get to the real life versions of Batman and Deathstroke
it´s very nice to see these two getting along so well after all these years...
Two guys from the same place play guitar together, years later also in the same place but on, but on the opposite side of the country, one guy plays with the 1st singer of Van Halen and the other guy plays with the second singer of Van Halen.
I hope i wasn't too hard on you, up in the bedroom (teaching guitar, of course😂)
That story of Joe sending Steve home during a lesson is an absolute gem. 😂
And here I am, about to buy tickets for the Satch/Vai show in Kansas City next May..... first time seeing either.... I am so stoked!!!
you can tell tales about this.....legends 👌🏻
"you can imagine what that was like at dinner. A big Italian family and i stand up and say 'I'm going to be a guitar player'." Well I'm Irish so all i can do is guess, but in my head I'm imagining a lot of shouting over each other and at least three or four times hearing "look what you're doing to your mother!" Am i close? Memorizing the notes sounds a lot more difficult to new players and non players than it really is. You see six strings (at least) and between 21 and 24 frets and think "that's 126-144 notes!" You only really need to know the whole notes, and only up to the 12th fret where the whole thing just repeats over again. Plus two of the strings are tuned an octave apart but they have all the same notes in the same position, so it's really just five strings you need to worry about. The tough part comes with open tunings, 30+ years and i still don't have a handle on them.
I can't say for Italian Americans but I'm Italian and I remember in high school after class we went to play in the studio, first we went to the guitarist's house where his mother made us food. it was impossible not to go out drunk. :D
Part 4? Where?
This is such an intimate, revealing, and yet joyful interview... but only 15 minutes?! Where's the rest of it?! You guys could go on for a 24-hour conversation and wouldn't still cover all you guys have gone through, by yourselves and together!! ☺️
My favorite Satriani album is Not of this Earth, but apparently it doesn’t count 😂
They would have been teenagers when they began as teacher and student.
That's not uncommon. Matter of fact it can be a good thing for the student. Seeing someone close to your own age playing at such a higher level can be a good motivator. Then again it could be an ego killer. Even now after 35 years of playing I'll watch some 8 year old freak of nature pull off something that I likely couldn't do with a week or two focusing on just that, and it makes me not want to pick the guitar up ever again. Like getting the shit kicked out of you in the school yard by a girl in front of half the school.
2 absolute goats in the guitar arts...wow
Joe's the reason I started playing Ibanez guitars and has been a huge impact on my playing.
First time I’ve seen him without sunglasses
What are the odds man.. crazy
This was great even though Randy Rhoads was my all time favorite , Steve Vai had an MTV video of the kid at show and tell that made me force my parents to buy me an Ibanez immediately. So Steve is the reason I play.
I can believe those guys are soooo old. I thought they were much younger than they are.
Very cool, thanks Steve for your honesty you have been my no.1 since P&W. Joe has an immediate Pow and catchiness playstyle. Memories and Circles are simple but carry depth because they take me back to early guitar days at high school mixtape era learning by listening.❤ everyone knew Joe Satch no one knew Steve Vai you had more feel and spiritual ness? Me & my mate Paul used to lie in bed in the dark night and try to astro travel to improve our guitar skills lol love ya mate, kia Ora ē hoa from New Zealand 👍
I feel Steve is one in a milion who actualy became better than his teacher who teacher is actualy Joe! Oh man!
No, not better, different, amazing... But skill levels are on par with each other. Both amazing shredders!
I would disagree, better. Different styles for sure. But at that level, you simply cannot say who is "better". You CAN say, who you like, or prefer more. I prefer Joe. Too many of Steves songs get really weird. Of course I own every cd both of them has put out, but I have found that i delete a LOT of Steves songs from his releases when making playlists, because they are dang near unlistenable, because they are so weird. And I think i have deleted like 4 of Joes... mainly the singing ones from Flying in Blue Dream..... lol
@@ckmoore101 for sure!
Surely this needs millions of views?
Please do a jam together in the studio last 1 was amazing ❤
Wait wtf, Joe S was Steve V's teacher???
You serious? You didn't know, yeah. Like, at live performances when they see each other they greet each other in a cool mentor mentee way. Kirk Hammet of Metallica was also a student of Joe
man i wonder how you must feel seeing this and not knowing like your mind must be blown so big rn
yeah man. Joe S also taught Kirk Hammet from Metallica and the guitarist from Primus (forgot his name)
@@jeremiahmacclureLarry lalonde
A happy mind blown moment as well at this fact... ❤
How much did Joe Satriani charge for the lessons? I have to know if I could afford it. lol It's a dream to be able to learn from Joe Satriani.
Joe satriani is not giving lessons anymore, and even if he did, it would be soooo expensive, i doubt that you could afford it
Joe was charging $5 a lesson at the time Steve Vai was his student.
@@ag3nt_green Wow. Now I know. If only...
Nice little tribute to those public school educators who had to deal with a bunch of malcontent schoolkids. 😂😂
These guys need to do a record together
Joe gets younger with age
Very Italian Persons 🇮🇹❤
It's so cool to see how these idols grew up and interacted throughout these great years of rock and metal. Comparing these days to what is happening today...it is depressing

Guys need to do an album together!
what is "magic chord sheet, 17 most position chords", I am guitar newbie, but, I do want to know what that is
this is gold
I enjoy hearing the in-depth conversion on how Joe taught Steve how to play.
So wonderful! I hope there will be more of these conversations.
holy carp, struck gold
we demand more conversations...we need to know...dont deny us. you are legends...please enlighten us..please
Indeed
Obviously surprised by the lack of views. How two legends can come from the same small town speaks volumes to their high school teacher but also their upbringing in that Italian Long Island neighborhood. Their work ethic and dedication. It goes to show that in life mastering any skill comes down to the information you are exposed to (and seek out), combined with repitition and dedication. Whether it be guitar, baseball, carpentry or any other endeavor.
Joe looks like he's 32 but had a kinda hard life.
2 maha guru guitar
why iam not surprised everything comes from the jazz ?
Such a pair of humble geniuses amazing story of their upbringing and what are the odds of having that kind of raw talent in one small town wow
My wife is a teacher runs mostly in the 'folk scene' though. Even she knows of these two legends! Iconic guitar virtuosos.
LEGENDS. Iconic guitar masters.
