Detailed comparison of six 160gsm dot grid notebooks for bullet journaling
I have already compared the three most popular brands of dot grid notebooks for bullet journaling, which were Archer & Olive, Notebook Therapy and Scribbles that Matter. ruclips.net/video/HsyGw9Vp2rM/видео.html
This video looks at six brands that cost a little to a lot less per notebook than the three popular brands: Quirky Cup Collective, Scribble and Dot, Vivid Scribbles, SeQes, and Slow Journal, and I also look at Pink Mackerel by Tekukor, which doesn't appear to be available any more but is an interesting example of a journal at a lower price point, and I also mention Yop and Tom occasionally, but as I don't own one, I don't discuss the construction or paper.

Using a stress diary to manage your mental health and anxiety
Просмотров 6318 часов назад
I found an old stress diary that I used to record occasions when I was stressed or anxious. The entries follow a system of recording the severity and importance of your feelings and the situation, and helps you map out your response. The entries provide perspective on the situations we get anxious about and hopefully lead us to respond more effectively when a similar situation occurs again.

I know I'm not alone when I confess to saving 'good' boxes, and boxes for Apple products are something special. The box had some weight to it, was glossy, the lid lifted off smoothly - how could I not save it. The I made a whole pile of fountain pen ink swatch cards, and discovered that the box was the perfect size to store them. I had to remove the branding though - it just didn't look right. ...

      Sadly, a country's policies often affect people's willingness to support private businesses in that country. I have several Russian friends, have traveled there and know people in Russia, but that doesn't mean I want to support the Russian economy at the moment when they are invading Ukraine. I think in terms of choosing journals, people are far more often concerned with general issues of copyright infringement and working conditions. I know several brands that have visited the factories producing their products (in any country) to make sure the working conditions meet the values of their brand. There's a lot that goes into someone's decision of who to buy products from - their reasons are their own - I'm just here to share information. I would be interested to know what I have said that you think is false?

    Not a fan of notebooks with Tomoe River paper (ghosting makes me unhappy), but I found really small ones (less than a6) and I cut the pages to write notes that I glue in my journal (with washi tape or non-permanent glue-tape) to make very luxurious, fountain-pen written post-its (the inks look sooo pretty 😍) that have the additionnal advantage to be so thin they're almost undetectable on the other side of the page.

    • @theusefuljournal
      @theusefuljournal 10 дней назад

      Yep - this is exactly why I don't give ratings for journals because everyone has different things they want out of a journal. So I just focus on giving all the information so people can make up their own mind. I love the idea of writing on the Tomoe River Paper then sticking it in your journal. That's one way to show the beautiful sheens of different fountain pen inks without having to use a separate little journal. I might have to use that idea!

      @theusefuljournal 10 дней назад

      Hi! Do you mean Kaisercraft? They've got lots of pretty notebooks, but they're not really the type I look for, as I focus on dot grid journals typically used for bullet journaling, that usually have thicker or treated paper that can cope with fountain pens or other mediums. I think Kaisercraft is lined journals with around 70-80 gsm uncoated paper that doesn't suit fountain pens much. Sorry - that means I won't be reviewing them. They look very pretty, and would be fine for using with ballpoint pens as a diary 🙂

    Nice!!! - I like the abstract, plus your layouts and color coding on edges of page I have been using the Hobonichi cousin - love the paper but don’t really need/use the pre-printed items on the pages I like having the whole year in one book - but am finding I use it less and less as the year progresses - not sure why I am doing that - but it has happened two years in a row now - so think I need to try something different I seem to not be able to restrict myself to only decorating/ setting up pages for one month at a time - I tend to design my whole year in one mega sitting - stamps, washi, markers and paint - so my book is super chunky before I have even begun writing in it - which means it is cumbersome on day one and then gets more and more chunky as I really start using the pages ( but I do love the feel of a well used planner) seriously considering using 12 smaller notebooks and thinking then I could restrain myself to just decorating for the month As I type this I am formulating my plan 🤪😁 will try an A5 traveler notebook system - then I could have one that is all the months and days laid out for the year and then one that is just for the current month with my monthly pages, etc I love the feel of tomoe river paper after it has been written on - which is why I have been using the hobonichi. - think I need to educate/expose myself to other paper types So funny to see you cold in July - I am in South Florida and it is so hot and humid here It looks beautiful where you are

      It sounds like a travelers notebook system would be perfect for you, and is definitely better at coping with chunky pages. Wow, it must be exhausting doing the whole year at once, and you're not spreading out the fun :) Maybe doing one month at a time will help keep you motivated because you've got another fun month to set up. Until five years ago when I started doing creative style bullet journaling, I often gave up writing in my journal around May/June. I really look forward to decorating my journal each month now, so I think that's one of the things that got me into the habit of using it daily and all year.

    This has to be the most comprehensive review of these journals. I always assume journals like this or moleskine are made mostly for writing in mind, and at most would hold up to fountain pen. I want one for sketches and couldn't justify having it if I can only use ballpoint gel or fountain pens. I didn't know you can use them for markers and watercolour even. I just got a blue Vivid Scribbles journal today and am quite disappointed with it. The pages do not lay flat, you have to crease most of them and the dots do not line up from page to page. Not impressed!😢

    • @theusefuljournal
      @theusefuljournal 16 дней назад

      Yeah, in my review I comment that I'm concerned about the quality of the spine, which is related to the ability to lay flat, and if you've seen my flip through of that journal, you'll see that they spine had to be taped up in the end. Vivid Scribbles are a bit cheaper than other brands, and you definitely don't get the same quality as brands like Archer & Olive. Most journals have variation of 0-1mm in the lineup of dots across a double page spread. It's really difficult to get it perfect during the manufacturing process. If it's more than that, I'd be upset. Customer service for Vivid Scribbles wasn't great a couple of years back and I don't know if it's improved, so I don't know how you'd go with returns. The paper in mine was okay though, so hopefully, once you start using it, you won't notice the other problems so much, maybe?? Good luck.

    This video comes at a perfect time. I’m currently on the hunt for my 2025 reading journal and I can’t decide between all the options. I’d love to go with a paperblanks but I fear that 120gsm pages (their thickest paper) are too thin as I want to do a lot of stamping and painting. I’m actually eyeing the Quirky Cup Collective Journal you have in your line up. And I’m of course thinking of investing in an A&O, a square one. I’d love my next reading journal to be square. I also don’t want to buy a bunch of different journals so I have to make a decision before purchasing 🙈

    • @theusefuljournal
      @theusefuljournal 16 дней назад

      I thought I'd replied to your comment! Stamping and painting would definitely be better on thicker paper 140gsm plus. The Quirky Cup Collective paper is amazing, and they also have a specific reading journal with prompts included for reviews, so it's worth checking out. They only have A5 size though. A square shape for my reading journal appeals to me as well. Archer & Olive have a range of square journals, and I think the size is perfect too. If you go A&O, please consider using my code TheUsefulJournal10 to get 10% off 💚. There's not many brands that do square journals - the one I showed in my video is Emma Kate Co, and I can't think of other brands that have them... Happy hunting!

    • @theusefuljournal
      @theusefuljournal 16 дней назад

      Most hardcover journals lay flat, it's just when the binding is a bit tight that the pages sit up in the middle, like for this Dingbats, which I hope will settle in once the spine has been broken in. Stapled journals never lie flat. It's hard to recommend a brand because there's so many other variables. I assume you're looking for similar weight paper to Dingbats. Paperblanks dot grid planner is also 100gsm and also doesn't sit perfectly flat, I think because there's so many pages (230). The Leuchtturm1917 Bullet Journal lays flat (120gsm) and most of my 160gsm journals lay flat. The two in my video are the Leuchtturm Bullet Journal and an Archer & Olive 160gsm journal. I will say that in all my stitched binding journals, it's never been a huge bother if it doesn't lay perfectly flat, as at least they all stay open on the page, especially if you push down on the spine a bit. The ones that annoy me are stapled books, because they usually require weights or clips to hold them open.

    Yay ! So happy you finally posted about Paperblanks! I think that they're my favorite notebooks, now, but I'm disappointed in their 120gsm paper, it's meh at best, for me (the one I have has a green fairy cover, though, and it's one of the most beautiful article of stationary I have ever owned). The one I reaaaaally like is the 100gsm paper, but they don't have a lot of options in this weight. I have an unbelievably pretty planner (the cover is a reproduction of japanese kimono motifs) with this paper, and writing with my fountain pens in it feels butter smooth and inks look so, so pretty 😍. And it's surprisingly opaque, really unexpectedly so. The 80gsm feels really good too, but of course it's a lot less opaque. Also, because I'm a bit of a geek, most of the covers are reproductions of historical, luxurious bindings, or artisanal treasures (carpets, kimonos, bindings...) from all over the world, in addition to the very high quality binding, which makes me so happy 😊. I see you stroking the cover and paper during the video, know that you are not the only one! I often find myself just looking at my pretty pretty planner, and petting the cover! Oh, and also also, now that I have several of them, I believe that, like Rhodia, they don't have different colors of ribbon assorted to the cover, they have only those 3, and for the notebooks with only one ribbon, I believe they're always red. Like the elastic is always black. Thank you for your thouroughness, as always, it's very interesting and useful, and I'm absolutely in agreement with your criteria.

I looked it up online when I was buying it, but no-one had made any comments about the paper, so I didn't know. It's not too bad, but it's not great either 😐

    This theme is so pretty, I like it a lot! Particularly these mixed media leaves 🥰, but I think the colors are very well balanced with the fiery ladybugs. The weeklies are especially elegant. Plus, it's been raining for months here (you know, because of climate change, everything gets brutally intense, like we can have drought or flood, nothing in between), so for once, I feel aligned with australian seasons! It's like it's been autumn since last october....

      Thank you! I also love this theme. It's been raining non stop here too. I know exactly what you mean about the climate. Australia seems to go straight from bushfires to flood to drought then back to bushfires again 🥺

      @piafitoussi Месяц назад

      Yes, I think the entire world (well reasonable people) worries for Australia since the horrific fire that destroted so much and killed so many animals, was it in 2021? And we should certainly worry for each other, I believe, and care for the state of the planet globally. It's one of the reasons I like your notebook reviews, the fact that you care about environmental impacts.

    Yay! Congrats on the new home! I'm planning to move to the west of France, near the ocean, next year, and this kind of content makes me want to go thrift shopping pretty furniture... I'll need to be patient, though! Although I don't think I'll be able to find such a beautiful, well thought desk for a price affordable to me, it's such a teasure to have that in your family! And it's also lucky that this desk has found someone to care for it as it deserves.

      The French coast is beautiful. I've been to Biarritz, Hendaye (because I did the Haute Route in the Pyrenees) and Arcachon (I have a friend with a business in Bordeaux), and I really want to visit a friend in La Rochelle. Are you heading north or south?

    • @piafitoussi
      @piafitoussi Месяц назад

      We'll be moving to Lorient, a city in the south of Bretagne, which is the region that makes the big arm on the west of France. So north-west? Centre-west? It's a port on the coast, and La Rochelle is not very far from it.

    I really like Rhodia notebooks, they're pretty and reliable, and very easy to find here in France, even in supermarkets. They were my first ever journals (3 for one year, in different shades of blue)! They do have more elaborate notebooks for bullet journaling, with more features, they call it "goalbook", and a perpetual agenda, called "perpetual" 😁. Also, their A5 notebooks are available with a soft cover or a hardcover in several very pretty colors, but maybe it's more difficult to find on the other side of the globe? And B5 in many colors, but only soft covers I believe. Oh and of course, Clairefontaine paper 🥰! I prefer the school notebooks paper, so opaque! but they only make it in school grids, extremely white, and with a cardstock or plastic cover. I hope you'll enjoy this one, I'm not very patriotic, but that's one thing I really like, and am a little proud of, living here: paper, stationary, pens, art supplies.... 😊

      I saw their hardcover version and their goalbook, but after a lot of investigation on their website, I settled on the unmarked softcover version. I think it will suit me best! I've heard so much about Clairefontaine paper, so I can't wait to try it!

      I love purple with orange too. Beyond doing a pen test and review, I'm also not sure of how to use it, but since it's so good with fountain pens, I think I'll use it for something that has a lot more writing than illustrations - although it is the perfect size for six months of my bullet journal, so I'll be tempted!

    Thanks! As an aussie trying to have a small footprint, its so frustrating having nearly everything made in china

    • @theusefuljournal
      @theusefuljournal Месяц назад

      I know! But, unfortunately it's just too expensive to make them in Australia. Most American journals are made in China too. At least if we buy from an Australian brand, the shipping is just from China to Australia. If we buy from an American brand, the product is often shipped there before being shipped here - creating a much larger footprint. Keep trying - every effort counts!

    Very nice-looking notebook. Amazon Australia says cover is faux leather, Amazon US says leather, Amazon Japan and the Kleid Website give no information. Also, it is marketed as an an on-the-go notebook (folds back on itself).

    • @theusefuljournal
      @theusefuljournal 2 месяца назад

      I agree, the design of the notebook is outstanding. Interesting, it certainly doesn’t feel like leather. I have a Nuuna with a really thin leather cover and it feels very different. I wonder if they had a limited release with a leather cover? I actually folded it back on itself before making my review, but didn’t comment on it. It significantly creased the spine.

      @@theusefuljournal Wirebound notebooks are actually quite handy to many people. It is interesting how, on one hand, we tolerate a thread bound notebook at our computer desk even though it takes up so much space and can annoy the hell out of us, and on the other we feel it is the end of the world when inks bleed and feather on our paper! 😂

    As thourough as ever, thank you! I use particularly "juicy" fountain pens 😁, and I'm very often disappointed by papers specifically branded as foutain pen friendly... I guess that one won't be the one for me either... I really appreciate your very detailled and fair reviews, I have a tendency to buy to many different notebooks, or other stationary items, to find the right one, and having people like you who do those testing properly really helps preselecting what I will effectively test myself and not being as wasteful as I have been in the past. So thank you again!
