DRUM KIT (for beginners) - Lesson 4 - "Hi-hat 8s"
Video 4 - “Hi-hat 8s”
This lesson we’ll be playing a fun rhythm I like to call “Hi-hat 8s”, all based around showcasing the hi-hat with a simple bass and snare groove underneath. This rhythm is a great way to build up playing smooth single strokes between the right and left hands, gradually getting a flow going. Start with RLRLRLRL on the hi-hat, then add the bass, then the snare, then some speed… The key is to keep it slow at first, then build up speed when it’s sounding smooth.
Give it a whirl and let me know how you get on! Tag me in your videos so I can enjoy your playing too.

    This is so interesting. I'm following you, also briefly Amy Cadle before she took up other instruments after the first lesson, then Dudu Tucci. These three totally different approaches are helping me progress, I think, more quickly as I see the connections between them and build more confidence. You are doing very valuable work for us who want to play these instruments.

    Can anyone recommend me a decent pandeiro for under 150usd that ships to the US?

    • @revkelly58
      @revkelly58 Год назад

      Meinl has a couple, the jingles are really-really dry. I have the one with the clear head. I prefer a wetter sound. They are also on the heavy side. I have a super light Gope pandiero that easier to play. My favorites to practice with are a Remo tambourine, about $35, and a CP natural skin tambourine, around $50. The jingles or platas have a wetter sound. I know sometimes it can be different to get good pandieros the US. I bought the Gope from a dude that was living in Brazil for a while, he bought it at the factory. Good luck.

    Thanks for a delightful lesson! I like your sound & flow! My favorite pandiero is an old approx.13" Carl Orff wood shell/calfskin-headed children's tambourine with wing nuts on the tuners, it's a lot looser & opener than most Brazilian drums but light, boom-y & jingle-jangle so I love it! Cheers! 🥁❤️

      Yeah I mentioned that in the comments; it didn’t do it in the practice video having spent about half an hour trying to get a good angle/placement on the wooden floor, and then when I watched the ‘final’ back it was shaky and didn’t want to spend all day faffing with it this time! Haha. I hear what you’re saying, hence the disclaimer ;)

    thanks for a very good presentation of Pandeiro basics. when learning tricky rhythms, I have found it helpful to use graph paper to see where the beats fall and the off- beat occurs. Glenn Velez uses this idea and I credit him for de-mysttifying unfathomable elusive rhythms that quickly develop ear worms.

    I was wondering quite how the fingers are positioned behind the thumb... further or closer towards the skin? How bent should they be or should they be straight? Or does it matter at all?! My pandeiro is quite large and heavy and I struggle a bit holding it for long. Thanks!

    • @hollyprestdrumsandpercussi172
      @hollyprestdrumsandpercussi172 3 года назад

      Hi there! It will depend a bit on the depth of the pandeiro shell; if it's very deep, you might find it a little more tricky to hold as you'll need more of your hand to grip around it. Without being with you in person, I might advise that whatever feels most comfortable (with your thumb still on top) is the right thing for you/your drum. As we progress through the week, I speak more about the fingers on the back side of things ;)
