    Recipe Notes & Tips: . Use a wooden spoon for stirring the mixture because metal spoons absorb heat. . Use a saucepan with heavy sides and bottom, so it will conduct heat evenly. . Also, use a large enough pan that will allow the mixture to expand while boiling and not spill over the sides. . Can use a food grade essential oil instead of fresh lemon juice. . Add a few drops of the essential oil at the end of cooking, after the mixture cools. . Make the cough drops on a cold, dry day. . Rainy or humid weather will cause the mixture to not set up properly. . To test if mixture has reached correct temperature, drop a little of the mixture in a small bowl of cold water and it should immediately harden and become solid. . Once drops are fully cooled, dust with powdered sugar, cornstarch, arrowroot powder, ground cinnamon, etc, to prevent drops from sticking together. . If the drops stick to the parchment paper, place them paper side down on a warm damp towel and let it sit for a couple of minutes. . Store in a tightly covered container in a cool, dry place for up to 4 weeks. . To prevent drops from sticking together during longer storage time: wrap the drops individually in pieces of parchment or wax paper.

    Instructions (yields 30 drops): . 1) Using a wooden spoon, mix together honey, lemon juice, turmeric, fresh ginger, and pepper in a medium sized, deep saucepan with heavy sides and bottom. . 2) Heat to boiling over medium-low heat, stirring often to prevent burning. . 3) Using a candy thermometer, heat mixture to 300-310F/148-154C degrees, until it reaches the hard crack stage (If no thermometer, test the mixture by dropping some of it in a cold bowl of water and if it hardens, it's ready). . **Watch the pan closely, as the mixture will foam up the sides of pan. Take the pan off the heat briefly to allow foam to subside, then place pan back on heat to continue cooking. May have to turn heat down to low to prevent honey from burning. . 4) One mixture reaches the hard crack stage, remove from heat, and allow to cool for a couple for minutes until thickens slightly. . 5) Pour mixture into small candy molds or drop by teaspoons onto parchment paper or a silicon mat. . 6) Allow to cool until drops are hard and firm. . 7) Once drops are fully cooled, dust with powdered sugar, cornstarch, arrowroot powder, ground cinnamon, etc, (optional) to prevent drops from sticking together. . 8) Store in a tightly covered container in a cool, dry place.

    Made with only four ingredients, these honey lemon homemade cough drops are a natural sore throat remedy. • Honey-based and made with immune-boosting ingredients, these DIY throat lozenges are both healing and soothing. • For our family, we use the leftovers from our homemade natural cough syrup to make these cough drops and that further my loves for this recipe. • If you haven’t made our cough syrup, you can totally buy the ingredients also. • But I’d really encourage you to make this a two step process, so that you have both a natural cough syrup AND a cough drop that your family (over age of 1 recommended) will come running TO YOU to take, and not AWAY from you for their healthcare needs. • And you can rest assured that you are not feeding your loved ones artifical dyes and ingredients. • You know exactly what’s in these and that they really do work, as well. • Honey helps coat your throat to prevent the scratchy cough feeling and lemon helps prevent and eliminate bacteria and infection as well as keep the ph of your stomach in a healthy range. • The ginger is an immune booster and can shorten the length of what is causing your cough in the first place. • And the turmeric reduces inflammation and can clear up chest congestion and also is an excellent immune booster, so why not have that in there as well? • You can chose to use dried/powdered ingredients if you do not have access to fresh ingredients, and you can even opt to leave them out all together if there is an allergy, or you just simply do not like the flavor profile. • There is just something so satisfying about cooking these ingredients together and temping it just right to achieve these beautiful amber colored cabachons of health. • If you haven’t made these for your family for sick season, Ihighly recommend you give them a try! • Read the pinned comments for the recipe! - - - - - #sorethroat #coughremedy #homeremedy #diycoughdrops #coughdrops #toxinfreeliving #naturalist #herbalist #herbalism #homesteading #homesteadlife #homesteader #honey #sorethroatremedy #apothecary #holistichealth

    The sweet gum tree. • Recognize this guy?! • You’re probably used to seeing this tree on various landscaping and probably even been annoyed by these spiky balls that drop from the tree. • These balls are called “oinks” and are actually not a nuissance at all! • Actually, picked while they’re still green, they pack a huge medicinal punch! These sweet, citrusy smelling balls are basically natures tamiflu. • But it’s not just the balls that are so great for you on the sweet gum tree, the entire tree is medicinal, practically! • The bark, the sap, and even the leaves! Today we’re focusing on the pods, however. • This tincture made from Sweet Gum tree pods (the spiky balls) can be used to fight off the flu and other similar viruses. • It is nature’s Tamiflu! • The sweet gum balls need to be used when they are still green and not brown. • The first step is to pick the sweet gum balls from the tree. Gather green balls to fill whatever container you will be using. • The green balls need to be broke open with a hammer, mallet or axe. I used a mallet and the balls broke apart easily. Fill a glass jar with the broken balls. • Add spirits to the jar to make the tincture. Add 80-120 proof clear alcohol, such as vodka or everclear to the jar. • Store the jar in a dark place for at least 6 weeks. Strain the tincture and put it in a dark amber bottle. • It will keep 1-3 years if stored properly. But with all my tinctures, I usually replace them next year with the new season, if we even have any left at that time. • The sweet gum ball tincture can be taken to PREVENT the flu by taking it daily during flu virus season to help your immune system fight off the influenza viruses and other infections. • One dropper a day is a suggested dosage. It can be taken with hot water or tea. • Take a dropper every 3-4 hours when AFFECTED by a virus or symptoms such as sore throats. • The sweetgum tincture paired with another natural treatment of elderberry syrup should be effective treatments to get through the time of year that brings flu season. • Now go out there and be someone’s hero and gather these balls up! • One man’s nuissance is another man’s medicine! 🤣💕🙌

    This is a great video, thank you!!! Nice to watch someone do this stuff. I’ve dabbled mostly teas, some tinctures, never used glycerin, will get some! There are some herbs/plants in my garden I’d love your thoughts on how to best use - Valerian, Rue, Motherwort (I have tinctures but don’t take them, maybe I should!) , and Rose of Sharon? You got me thinking I need to plant more yarrow next spring too.

    Once you strain it, it becomes shelf stable? Is that correct?

  • @thewildcarrotfarmstead
    @thewildcarrotfarmstead 22 дня назад

    Directions: . 1) Slice the lemons thinly and set aside. Peel the ginger and turmeric. And then slice those thinly as well. Layer your lemon, ginger, black pepper (a couple tsp total) and turmeric in a wide mouth jar. Then pour your honey over the top. . 2) Use a knife to dislodge lemons and ensure that everything is completely covered with honey. This will take some time and patience. Then cap tightly. . 3) Place the jar on a plate to catch any overflow. . 4) Place the jar in a warm spot where you will see it daily. Once a day, shake the jar. Then burp the jar (open and close the lid) to allow any build up of fermentation gasses to escape. . 5) After 2 or 3 days, the honey in the jar will become thinner. This is an indication that the fermentation is on track. This is normal! . 6) After a week, place the jar in the fridge to stop the fermentation process. Leave the jar in the fridge to continue to infuse for up to a month. (at least 1 week in the fridge) . 7) Strain the lemon and roots from the honey. Retain the lemon and roots in a separate jar to use in herbal tea. Freely take by the teaspoon to loosen cough or soothe a sore throat.

    Ingredients: . Lemons Fresh ginger root Fresh turmeric root Black pepper Raw honey . (The specific amount of ingredients are all eye-balled based on the size of the jar you use. I often make a gallon at a time, but I also have access to a LOT of honey. You can choose to make a quart or half gallon, instead. But the key is this: whatever jar you select, you will snuggly stuff your jar to the top with enough of these ingredients. Lemons being the primary ingredient.) . Notes: . This recipe is perfect for all family members over one year of age. And will be better than any over the counter cough medicine you can find. . You’ll want to be sure you have a continuous fermentation cycle of this going through the fall and winter months, because once you get a taste for it, and what relief it provides your family, you’re never going to want to run out of these sweet, syrupy concoction of intentionally crafted medicinal goodness. . This will keep indefinitely on your apothecary shelf in a cool, dark spot. If you are more comfortable keeping it in the fridge, you are more than welcome to do that as well! . You can also use this to add to teas and to drizzly on top of various foods and cheeses, for example. The uses are endless! . Though you must note that heat will denature the benefits of the ferment, so please keep that in mind when looking for ways to incorporate this lovely golden syrup. My personal favorite way to take it is by the spoonful!

    Remember that viral reel I posted last year about this safe (for one year old and above), alcohol free cough syrup for the entire family?! • This time with…OUR FIRST FULL LENGTH RUclips VIDEO that goes along with it! • Go check that out! • If you’re going to make ANYTHING for your apothecary, it should be this. • It’s easy, fairly quick (for a ferment), works WONDERS, and I’m not kidding when I say your family will come running for this. • No need to pen your kids down to force this “med” into them. • You’ll more than likely need to protect this jar so it’s not consumed in an entire day. 🤣💕🙌 • Long before we had our #farmstead and when I was teaching classes on urban #homesteading-this was one of my favorite #recipes to share. • #Fermenting is so easy and what makes it so special, is the process takes an average #food and makes it super with all the #probiotics that are formed during the chemical process! • Never #fermented before? • Well fermenting in #honey is about the easiest of all ferments! • I’ve been fermenting #garlic in honey for a nutrient dense #immune booster and #antibiotic for over a decade. • I’ve been fermenting cranberries in honey too, for a seasonal, healthy treat! • They even found fermented honey in the Egyptian tombs, and it was still edible! Woah! • So if you start it now, you’ll have a #sorethroat and cough #remedy ready for your family in just 2 weeks! • The instructions/recipe are pinned to the top of the comment thread, below!

    Glycerites are pretty amazing! • Is it like a tincture? Yes! • You can take this internally…especially if you have kids or are a non-drinker and want to say goodbye to traditional alcohol tinctures! • Most tinctures can be crafted with glycerin- though there are a few exceptions to this rule…with really woody and heavy herbs…you still may want to stick with alcohol. • And you can also use these Glycerites topically and also in skincare as well! That’s my most favorite! • And since glycerin is water based, you can put that watery medium you’re working with, right down in it! • So no need to take the time to dry anything first, like you would an oil infusion, for example! • I then store these in amber glass to take as needed, but mostly to add to our skincare! • My favorite way to use glycerites for the skin, is in facial moisturizers and body lotions! • I’ve made an awesome triple berry facial moisturizer with strawberry glycerite. So. Good. • I also made a body lotion formulation using the glycerite made from the fresh peaches from my friend’s orchard, along with mango butter that is divine…So good, in fact, that I’m thinking of sharing the this peach mango body lotion recipe on our RUclips account as a free mini course! • Think outside of the box, too, with what you can make Glycerites from! • It can stretch beyond herbs, to fruit as well, as I briefly mentioned ! • Some of my favorite herbs and flowers to craft Glycerites from are pomegranate seeds, peaches, roses, cucumber, cherries, chamomile, and strawberry is an absolute favorite! Get creative! • Are you ready to try your hand at making glycerites yourself? • Check out the pinned comment for this super easy process!

    *When making glycerites, ingredients are measured by weight, as a percent. This insures the correct ratio of glycerin-to-infusing-ingredient, allowing you to make a safe finished product without the use of preservatives.

    *Ingredients: 70% vegetable glycerin 30% herbs, fruits, flowers, or vegetables . *You’ll also need: Digital scale 2 mason jars (or similar glass jars) with lid Spoon or silicone spatula for stirring Funnel Butter muslin, tightly woven cotton cloth, or a coffee filter . *Prep step: Sanitize your jar and lid by washing in hot, soapy water. You could also run it through a hot setting on your dishwasher, or disinfect by giving a rinse in a dilute bleach solution (3 cups water mixed with 4 teaspoons liquid bleach.) . Step 1: Weigh out whatever herb, fruit, or vegetable you’re infusing and give it a rough chop. Pour into a glass jar. . Step 2: Weigh out glycerin and pour into the jar. Stir well until everything is nicely incorporated. . Step 3: Put a lid on your jar and let the mixture set for 7 to 10 days. Shake the jar daily. You’ll notice the glycerin start to take on the color of your infusing ingredient. It’s so pretty! You’ll also notice the glycerin becoming thinner or more fluid. This is normal, as the water-soluble constituents are pulled into the glycerin. . Step 4: After 7 to 10 days, it’s time to strain. Place a funnel covered with butter muslin (cotton cloth, coffee filter) into the second sanitized glass jar. Pour the glycerite into the funnel to strain. This will take a looooong time, so be patient and let the glycerite do its thing. Although it’s tempting, don’t squeeze the straining bag or filter, otherwise your glycerite will turn out cloudy. . Step 5: After the glycerite is completely strained, discard the herbs/fruit. I like to compost mine. Label your glycerite with the type and date made. . To use: Use this glycerite in any recipe that calls for glycerin, like handmade lotions and facial creams. . Shelf life: Unpreserved glycerite should last 4 months, preserved for 12 months. But, of course, if it changes in color, consistency, or smell, toss it.

    My dear friend had a ton of black walnuts that had fallen from a storm and wanted to know if I wanted them! • Yes, of course I do! • What I love about walnuts, is there two things I craft from them; and each thing requires a different part of the nut! • For our black walnut tincture-I use the husks. • And then, oh my goodness, for the inside but part itself, I use that to make a molasses that we’ll learn about another day very soon! • For now-it’s tincture time! • The resulting tincture is used to purge parasites and as a topical anti-bacterial. • It also has the added benefit of being an emergency iodine supplement, due to the high levels of tannins extracted from the black walnut hulls! • Choose fresh black walnuts that have just fallen from the tree within the past day or two. They should be firm and have no visible breaks or insect damage on the outside. • Using a hammer, I like to carefully break the husk off the nut. • As each husk comes off the nut, it releases an exotic, almost intoxicating scent. I’ve read that the smell supposedly comes from the high iodine content. • The hull themselves are very staining, so much so that black walnut has been used historically as a wood stain, natural ink and hair dye. Use gloves when handling black walnuts or your hands will be stained brown for weeks. • Place the hunks of black walnut hull in a jar. Pick a jar that you don’t mind losing because the tincture will stain the glass and it will not wash off. Fill the jar to within about 2 inches of the top with black walnut husks. • Once the jar is nearly full, fill it to the top with alcohol. You don’t need anything high proof here, just a cheap bottom-shelf vodka. Store the infusing tincture out of direct sunlight and allow it to infuse for 1-2 months. • Give the jar a shake every time you think about it, but be extra sure the lid is on tight. If it’s not, that’s one unholy staining mess that’s much worse than your average homemade tincture. • Once the tincture has fully infused, strain it through a fine-mesh strainer and store it in amber dropper bottles until needed. BLACK WALNUT TINCTURE DOSAGE Though black walnut tincture is considered a gentler way to purge parasites than conventional prescription de-wormers, it’s still hard on the system. There is some evidence that it can cause mouth or throat cancer if taken internally over long periods. Do not use black walnut tincture for more than 2 weeks at a time. The dosage for black walnut tincture is usually set at 15-20 drops taken in water 2-3 times per day.

    Wether or not to band your male goats!? (Get it?!) • A “neutered” male #goat is known as a #wether. • And yes, that means taking his manhood from him. • On the #farm, especially a #dairyfarm, babies are born often! • And in nature, it’s often that us ladies only really need one male around to get the job done! • So what to do with all the other males that are born, that we don’t need-because we already have our #buck?? • There’s several options! • Today, I’m focusing on making those cute little #bucklings into wethers! • When a farmer decides to wether (or “band”) a goat, this decision often comes for one or two reasons. • One, being to later utilize the animal for meat. • But that’s for a different #lesson day! • The second reason one might choose to wether a goat, is because the farmer wants to keep them (or sell them) as a “pet” or companion animal on the farm! • And don’t fret-for these guys are staying to be just that! • Since #goats are herd animals, they always need at least one other goat friend to keep them company! • And since a wether can not/will not usually harass, or impregnate females, they work great to give to females for friends-or to put with your buck, since he often is alone, separated from the rest of the #herd! • A wether is everyone’s friend! • If you are considering this as a herd-management option for your goats-here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way! • 1) Wait to wether! Now, don’t wait too long-but the longer you wait, the more the ureters have a chance to develop, and decreases your chances of issues later arriving in that area! Waiting also allows the goat to get to a nice finish size later! *When is the ideal time? This is all personal opinions, really, but our ideal time to wether is between 10 and 12 weeks. • 2) Ensure they’ve had a tetanus shot first! • 3) Have a partner to help! • 4) Make sure you do not catch a nipple in your band! • 5) And that both testicles have descended and are through the band, before releasing! • 6) Monitor the bucklings afterwards, as they’ll have mild discomfort for a few days. • 7) And remember-the goat can still be fertile for several days after #banding! #homestead #goats

    This calf lost her mother 😞 and is why we have to start her on a bottle. Which sometimes can be no easy task. But she is on and thriving! And thanks to one of our other milk cows for providing the meals! ❤

    13:20 how do you know what kind of metal you’re looking at (I’m garage sale hunting)? I thought all kitchen metals were stainless steel? 16:30 the whole thing??

    I have been collecting mullein flowers on my walks each morning to make this oil, but remembering your advice to dry all the herbs first, that's what I've been doing with the mullein flowers. They sure do shrivel up to nothing! Now that I watched the full video I have to run out and get more olive oil (just ran out) and see if I can still find some fresh flowers!

    Ingredients: 16oz Grassfed Tallow 8oz Coconut Oil 4oz 100% real beeswax 4oz non-nano zinc oxide 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder for tint (optional!) 45 drops of essential oils of your choosing Directions: Combine all the ingredients (except essential oil!) in a pot and melt together on low over the stove top. When everything is melted down, allow to cool for around 20 minutes (stirring occasionally). You’ll know it’s cooled enough, because the mixture will stop splitting (separating) and it will thicken and stick to your spatula! Now it’s time to add the optional essential oils (I added Plumeria today) and give it another good stir. Now it’s ready to pour off into containers of your choosing. (I prefer metal containers for this, personally.) Allow to fully sit up and you’re done! (Yields approximately 12 (3oz) containers.
