Let's restrict ourselves to x >= 0. Now the equations (√x)^2 = √(x^2) = x hold i.e. y = √x is the inverse function of y = x^2. Now we show that y = x^(1/2) has this exact same property: (x^(1/2))^2 = x^(2•1/2) = x = x^(1/2•2) = (x^2)^(1/2). Moreover a function may have at most one inverse function. Thus it must be that √x = x^(1/2) for all x >= 0. No need for an assumption like √x = x^n.

The reason why the sqrt root of x is equal to x raised to the 1/2 is because to remove the square root you need to sqrt both side and the sqrt root would dissapear but if we aply to power rule of (a^n)^m = a^nm then the 1/2 times 2 would take 2 away and make x^1 wich is just x, same thing to the other side
