A Safer Method to Descale Your Breville Dual Boiler BES920
Here is a method you can use to descale your dual boiler without any risk to the thermal fuse - as we are not going to let the boiler heat up. Make sure the boiler has fully cooled down before carrying this out - we don't want any steam in the boiler that could interfere with the refilling.
The number one reason the probes malfunction during a descale is steam carries water/agent up to the top of the boiler, causing a path to ground across the ceramic surface. This is usually during the fill stage on the first rinse. As we don't have enough heat to generate steam, this should prevent the problem of overheating or not filling.

Breville Oracle (BES980) - Poor Milk Fix
I’ve just bought this machine used. When I drained the two boilers, the drip tray only filled up about half of what you suggested. Then I started the process and my pump(s) only came on for about 10-15 seconds. After the 20min process nothing came out of the right boiler-access I’m guessing new probes are inevitable? -my conclusion was that the steam boiler doesn’t properly fill because of a faulty red probe. Even during normal use, hence the only half full drip tray before the descale process EDIT: Actually, maybe it was clogged from the beginning , therefore didn’t empty properly and when starting the process, the boiler was already (still) full so the pump didn’t add „more“ of the solution.
It sounds like your right-side drain is blocked before you even started - is this right?
@@BrevTechah now I saw this, yes that’s also what I was thinking. I’ll keep you updated
Yes, so after manually filling the boiler with some of the solution (by unplugging the ted probe) and letting it soak for a good while, it took me some waiting and shaking, but then there were a lot of flakes that came out with all the water. So you were right, it was just a clogged drain in the beginning. Here it was important to unplug the red to get some solution in at all.
@@maximiliankrause9533 Thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully now, things will be more smooth next time you do it.
I've heard that the most recent models have replaced those with compression fittings. How hard is it to fix those if they fail? Any update video would be awesome! :)
The new ones don't have internal o-rings. The do have their own problems tho - the metal rod can get pushed up when the material softens up. Time will tell if this ends up causing leaks, but it's quite possible we will have the same descale problems again if they do.
Great videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge. My Dual Boiler started dispensing water out of the brew head as soon as the machine is turned on! Tried unplugging and replugging but getting the same issue. Any idea where to start looking? thanks
Hi, does it stop after 30 secs or keep going? and have you recently taken the machine apart?
Solenoid valve stuck open. Or the Triac board is fried.
@@Koolnirvanaguy On the bes920 the triac board is just for the boilers - unlike the Oracles
That’s right. The main power control board takes care of the solenoid.
@@Koolnirvanaguy yeah this is why I suspect the front panel. It could be water in one of the shot buttons. Failing that, the main board
I read about some people who descale their machines manually. They open the lid, remove all the sensors, and with the machine unplugged, fill the steam boiler with hot water and descaling solution using a funnel. Wait for about 20 minutes, and then open the ports to drain the boiler. What are your thoughts on this technique? Thanks.
Yes, that has been the traditional way, but that method doesn't descale your steam boiler inlet port properly (important), your coffee boiler, group head or solenoid - it's just doing the steam boiler element. I think this way is much easier too.
This is true. And sorry if it's a dumb question, but why doesn't the same issue - blowing the thermal fuse - occur in the brew boiler?
It’s a good question and I’m not 100% sure but it’s either the different design level probe or the lack of steam in that boiler
Thank you for this video, I've just completed my descale and the steam boiler is working well! However, another issue has reared its head. Now whenever I pull a shot, a quick flow of water comes from the group head with a gurgling noise, it then slows down for the rest of the preinfusion time until the pump kicks in full power. Any thought? I really appreciate your videos!
This is often a swollen seal inside the brew pump. Try increasing the pre-infusion strength (hold both arrow buttons in) to see if that helps. can i ask what firmware version you have?
d11 is what I see in the diag menu, I will give the pre-infusion power increase a try. Is there a permanent fix for this issue without increasing preinfusion power?
@ repair the pump with the kit from my store or replace the pump.
Aww man, you mean to tell me I didn’t have to cut the brown wire, I could have just unplugged the sensor? :) waaay easier. Also, which one is the vac valve? My drain port is completely blocked even after leaving the solution in overnight
Ha, yes sorry. I had in my mind last time about the machine not going through the process with the blue wire cut - I think i was confusing things with another model - or maybe the a later firmware version I haven't tried yet. I also never considered your case, which is why i re-made the video with some suggestions for you. The vac valve is the middle port on top. it's not easy to remove (i use an impact driver) it's central so allows you to feed the wire straight, but you might be able to come in from any of the probe ports. In your case, it sounds like you had a LOT of buildup in there. My next step would be to try turning the valve on and off a few times to see if that breaks it up. Failing these things you could take out the valve by removing the 20 or so screws on the bottom base to get to them.
@@BrevTech wow you remade the video because of me? Thanks :) I gotta say, your videos are the reason I feel confident about tinkering with my DB. Thank you very much for taking the time to make them.
that sounds like a great angle to avoid this problem, thank you!! may i ask: the other problem with descaling, which you have also mentioned in other videos and which i had with my oracle touch was, that the sensors change there resistance when exposed to the descaler solution - as a result the boiler only heats up to 70degrees. will this problem be solved with removing the blue cable as well - maybe because the solution does not get as hot as before? i really appreciate what you are doing here, helped be a big deal and saved me much money already 😊
It should work - i just don't have any in right now to test with. Not having any heat should resolve both the overheating and non filling issue. In your example, that could happen if the red probe was contaminated, which stopped the pump from running, but the blue probe was reading ok (so turned off the heat). So, yes, this should stop that too
Thank you so much for the video. that’s really smart to protect the fuse this way. Now if the red probe malfunctions I would have to unplug that to refill the boiler, correct? How would I know when to its full enough?
I turn my steam wand on when doing that. You can see when its full since there will be water coming out of the steam wand :)
The number one reason the probes malfunction is steam carries water/agent up to the top of the boiler. This is usually during the fill stage on the first rinse. As we don't have enough heat for that, then the red probe (should) work as normal and fill the boiler to the correct levels. If yours does fail, then the worse that can happen is the boiler is cold and empty - so remove and clean the red probe. Then order some new probes :)
Hi. What is the purpose of removing the 2 Philips screws under the front panel?? I’ve removed the top on mine before and I never had to remove those 2 Philips screws.
Those two screws should be holding the lid down. I guess yours aren't going into it for some reason. Maybe the mounts have broken off
Hey. That's plaster for heat sinks and not glue. I left it to dry for 24 hours and it just fell out.
Make sure you use enough and the hole is drilled deep enough. I've not heard of anyone having this issue and i've been making them for a year. I use plaster as it stays a little flexible and should put less pressure on the wire as it springs up and down.
@@BrevTechI left it this time for 2 days and its still not solid. Yes I drilled it deep. Saw another video where he capped it with crazy glue. I did this. That was a good idea. Also, when you reassemble you are missing a screw to be placed back in. I had one left over and see on yours you did not put it back in. Anyway, thanks for the part. Machine turns on now.
@ well spotted! I will add the glue capping into the instructions. I did this in the first video but missed it out on this one :(
Hi , can you please leave a link of the washer that needs to be replaced , ive got the same issue and my pump went really lound after a descale , so im pretty sure the pump is underperforming , it goes good to 9 bars but pre infusion is off , and by the sound of it im judging its weared out not suprised tho the machine has 12.5k coffes made and still works perfect
Hi, there is a link to the website above these comments and it's in the description too. You can increase the pre-infusion strength if you press both arrow buttons which will get you by in the short-to-medium term
@BrevTech if i get the pump to work once ( hot water or anything ) Then the pre infusion would work normal for as many shots as i want , if i start the machine from cold no pre infusion unless i do this , but as mentioned the pump sound drasticlly changed after a descale wich brough out a crazy amount of scale ) You think its better if i get a new pump or the kit would be enough ? Also is there anything else i need to recconect the big water pipes ? Zip ties etc Thanks a lot Ill carry out the repairs this weekend hopefully

Stock basket from Breville. It will over grind. I have to set it up on highest dose setting for it to sense it is full and then tamp.
@@Koolnirvanaguy ok, I switched to a 16-18g basket for mine. That works for me.
@@BrevTech thanks. I’ll keep fiddling with it.
Hey great video! I have the exact model and while my steamer works totally fine, the hot water spout and the actual espresso maker side does not push any water. Not even a drop. Any idea? When i turn the knob for hot water or press the button to pull the shots i do hear the pump engaging and vibrating but absolutely 0 water or even sign of it
It will likely be your main pump - especially if the water isn't going into the drip tray either.
Hello I want to ask about the same problem on my machine. I have replaced the moc3063 optocoupler (3 items) And triacs Q6015L6 (2 items) and BTA06T-600CW (1 item) But why does my engine's temperature still rise to 123° and if the terminal has not been unplugged, the boiler is still heating May I know what's wrong with my machine?
It could be another component on the triac board I guess. It might be best to get a whole new board
Hi, Your video is super helpful. thumbs up. My steam builder stops heating and took it out to check. When I use my multimeter to check boiler resistance as you did (50M ohm) in the video, no connectivity. Does that mean my heating element is broken? I also checked the thermal switch after I cut the wire on both side. No connectivity either.
@@minchingho to confirm you are testing across the element tabs and not across the wires going through the other parts? If you get no resistance then I’m afraid your boiler is scrap as the element would have burned out :(
@@BrevTech I also tested across the tabs and the reading was 16 ohm. is that normal?
@ that’s about right I think if it’s a 120v. I misunderstood you before Hopefully it just needs the thermal fuse replacing
@@BrevTech I checked thermal fuse and it was fine. Does that mean I need to replace thermal switch(thermostat)? I check the resistance across the tabs and this is also open circuit.
@ yes that should be closed until it reaches 152c so replace it
Question on the automatic tamping motor. It seems that whenever we tried to change the coffee dose the machine keeps grinding too much coffee and does the wavy tamping. Is there a trick in opening the tamping motor and seeing if something is off. I’ve seen on Reddit a lot of folks dealing with this issue. There are no error logs that catch my eyes. This is for an Oracle touch made in 2023.
@@Koolnirvanaguy the basket needs to be damp or wet to avoid the wavy tamp. It a design problem and I’m not sure why Breville didn’t supply coated baskets like they do with the single one. The only way to successfully reduce the dose down to say 18g is buy a smaller basket for it.
The auto dosing just doesn’t sense the right amount of coffee if I lower the dose to say 19 grams , the machine will over grind and there is an excessive amount of grinds left on top of the fan v
@ are you using a stock basket or a smaller one?
i've not played around with it much, but have you tried changing the tamp settings in the live debug menu to see if that works?
Hi! I just replaced my water pump and solenoid valve, turned it on and noticed drops of water coming out of the pin/hole connection from the pump to the steam boiler. Do you have a video on how to fix that? The. Bottom pan below the pump is rusted so it’s been leaking for awhile (my dual boiler is about 10) 😂
Hi, so i can understand better which part, send me a chat or email from the website and i'll take a look.
My replacement sensor kit finally arrived after 2 months backorder. Before reassembly I measured the replacement sensor resistance at 57kOhm @ 70°F.
Hi there. My bes980, the steam wand will work when raised in manual mode. If you lower it. The Venturi valve machine guns, and it allows steam. I’m about to fully service with all new o rings ect. The auto function will not work anymore. It won’t self purge the valve and shut off. But if you lower the steam wand and put it into manual mode the solenoid works again. I’m a little confused as to what my issue is and what part needs replacing.it is leaking steam out hence the orings coming, and I thought I might replace the triacs and the Octocouplers too. Might as well just service the whole lot and future proof it Any help would be appreciated. Cheers
We replaced the Triac for the coffee boiler and when plugged in (switched on at the wall and not the machine) the little cylinder resister fried. Any ideas what we are doing wrong?
Are you 100% it was the correct triac?
Model number we took out was Q6015L6 and Batch number 9CZAD. The replacement was the same model number with batch number PH238. We were thinking possibly the triac batch is bad but other than that we’re at a loss. Thanks for the quick reply!

yep they are the same
Fixed today with your kit. Your instructions are spot on. My wife is very happy. Thank you so much
Great video! What could be the cause if steam debug boiler temp goes no higher than around 99-100 Celsius, Boiler status staying on ON all all the time, but temp value just doesn’t go higher. Therefore „total temp“ stays at around 86 Celsius, even though brew boiler temp is at 93 and steam boiler temp at 99-100. Oracle Touch
Also, there is water in the steam boiler, and high probe AD 236, low probe AD 40.
I guess my problem is that the temp seems to “hover“ at 99-100 after a while of it slowly going up, but not going up any higher, even though it says steam boiler ON all the time.
Oh, and as for error codes.. the only one I get is the occasional „ER18 Steam Boiler NTC not responding“, currently at count 2
@@kassianchannel Hi, I say what causes this at: ruclips.net/video/erTvSJMyt6M/видео.html
@@BrevTechwow, thanks for your quick answer! Just for some additional information to get this diagnosis done tonight - is there a way to distinguish the triac/opto coupler being fried from a problem with the thermal switch shutting off too early without taking the whole machine so far apart as to actually physically reach the thermal switch? Anything that would distinguish those in a measurement with just the lid off and triac board accessible?
thanks for posting the video - certainly the clearest explanation of how to deal with the issue that I have found

Good question. From what I can see, they are the same part.
I actually disassembled mine per your instruction and the two wires were intact to the sensor. I think the circuit board or sensor itself may have gone bad. In any event, they are included in the replacement kit as well.
Thanks you helped me fix my leaks!
What I have been doing on Bes900's & 920's is to take out probes, manually fill with water/citric acid mix (using hot tap water) directly into the boiler with a small funnel, leave for 20 mins than drain out either with the drain port or syphon. Repeat a few times than switch to water and repeat to rinse. It would be nice to feel confident about using the built in cleaning cycles however :(.

Thanks for great video. Is there any major harm by not repairing the dripping steam wand?
thanks! Not if it's just dripping from the tip; however, it could be an indication the rest of the steam valve is wearing out too. Any leaks around that area can cause problems - especially if the bracket holding it all in rusts away. You can't buy that part.
Thanks, appreciate your video, it helped me change the o-rings on my six-year-old Oracle. I had 12 red and 5 blue o-rings, and followed all the spots to put 2 in and had 3 left over. I found spots to use them to replace others, not sure if they were the right ones though.
Very impressive repair. Message to anyone considering a Breville Dual Boiler machine - spend your money on a machine with an E61 group head instead. It'll be much easier to repair and have a much longer life.
thx!!!
Thanks mate, I managed to fix it today with your awesone instructions. Greatings from Germany!
What are the nominal temps for each of the boilers?? How long do you let it heat up for?? Thanks!
coffee and grouphead boilers should be around 88-94c then steam boiler around 130c
@@BrevTech Many thanks!!
Thanks for the detailed video. On my Sage oracle when I turn the machine at the mains plug, but keep the power button off, the top of the steam boiler gets warm. Is this normal? I ran your voltage check on the Triac board and all seems good.
If it keeps warm when turned off then the triac board is letting power through to one of the boilers. You can find out which one either by using an energy meter and taking note of the watts or amps it's pulling, or for the Oracle, go into the live debug mode and see the temperatures of the boilers.
Thanks. Do you have a video on the oracle live debug mode? I don’t have the touch version and don’t know how to access or interpret this menu.
Great videos, thanks. I’ve just inherited a Sage Oracle in need of some tlc. Having trouble at the first step getting the lid off! The problem is I can’t see the underside screws. A slot head seems to engage but it won’t budge. Any tips? Would also appreciate a walk through of those service menus, what they mean and how to reset. Cheers.
Yes I do need to do one for the Oracle. Those screws are philips and can sometimes be very stuck. Push up hard to avoid rounding the heads off. Good luck
@@BrevTech Thanks got there eventually - ended up using an extended bit on an impact driver! For others, its a Philips #1 and is the same as the lower panel screws on the back. You also need a driver with a straight 100mm shaft - most of my Philips heads are on a bit-holder type driver and this is too thick to fit in the recessed shaft. My small slot head screwdriver fitted in the crosshead well but simply couldn't generate enough torque.
@@geoffbaldwin1618 great work! i was going to suggest using an impact driver but didn't think you would fit one in there.
love your videos! my issue is my oracle one touch will turn on, BUT once i put the portafilter in to start the grind, it powers off. Is this an O ring issue???
It's either water inside from a leak (does it work when you first turn it on? i.e. when dry) or faulty components. What errors do you get in the log?
Thank you!!!
Hello, Thank you so much for this video. I’m thinking of going the repair route but I’m unable to find a 40k ntc thermistors. Can you please share a link to where I can get one?
The link to my shop should be above this comment.
For the 920 and 980 you can unplug the low level water probe to not heat the steam boiler. The brew boiler heats up fully and you can use the machine. For the 990 if you unplug the low level probe it will never allow you to use the brew boiler because it believes. It is not heated.
Thanks. I might have to rethink another way around this then, for those ones. I'm pretty sure i've seen the newer 920s and 980s also use all 3 boilers as an average like the 990 does too. Maybe shorting across the NTC would work. This would make it think it's hot.
