I fell for the propaganda. I’ve always thought that Repulse and P of W were crushed…it was a big part of Japanese invincibility propaganda. But once again, it was a weasel victory. It certainly wasn’t a sign of Japanese invincibility. They were kidding themselves, from day one.

Photo is the USS Washington (BB-56), a North Carolina-class battleship, with USS Wichita (CA-45) in the middle and HMS Norfolk in the rear taken at Hvalfjord, Iceland, loading supplies, May-June 1942. She was launched in June, 1940 and commissioned on May 15, 1941. She was decommissioned in June 1947 and sold for scrap in May, 1961. She was awarded 13 battle stars for her service in WW2 and credited for being the last battleship to sink another battleship, which occurred during the Battle of Guadalcanal in November, 1942.
Why are you posting a photo of a Japanese ship?
Sir, the photo of the Japanese ship is relevant to the historical context.
I know that I am talking to ghosts but the Japanese ghosts would be sad to find out that their great victory at the Battle of the Coral Sea is now regarded as a strategic victory for the US. The US Marines kicked the Japanese troops butts at Guadalcanal. The Japanese certainly had a knack for exaggerating their air and sea victories. American pilots also exaggerating their victories but the Japanese were far ahead of reality.
American ghosts would be sad to see us currently evacuating Okinawa and relocating to Ie Shima
I wasn't aware of the different evaluations of Coral Sea; interesting to discover. Just in the context of Guadalcanal, the wrong information that was informing their plans and operations staggers me. The effects on Japan were ruinous, sometimes the entire operation becomes a choreographed death ritual. That being so for the Japanese army and navy - trained military minds but in a make believe world - our guys still had to die and kill for thousands of days and nights.
The Japanese over reporting and under reporting really hurt them in the long run. When they covered up the losses as Midway some decisions seem to have been made, especially by the army, thinking they had more naval power than they actually did.
The Japanese government was lying about the war to the Japanese people up to the end of the war. They suffered from an extreme case of wishful thinking.
USS South Dakota on the cover?
I don’t see any lights on…
That's USS Washington.

Fletcher's plan was always to protect carriers. Why were the Army and Marines surprised? Later in the war Fletcher may not have made the same decision.
Im surprised after an hour documentary it ends in midsentence. In genedalI like the series but errors in prounciation and simple errors like not wrapping the story make me wonder what are you thinking? After an hour plus story why noy wrap the story?

Photo is the Japanese battlecruiser Kongo on full power trials on May 8, 1913. First in her class of four battlecruisers, she was designed by British naval engineer George Thurston, and under the contract with the British as first ship of her class she was built in England by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering. All parts used in her construction were manufactured in the U.K. Between 1929 to 1935 she was reconstructed as a fast battleship. On November 20, 1944 sailing with other ships, including the battleship Yamato, from Brunei to Kure for fleet reorganization they entered the Formosa Strait. The submarine USS Sealion, shortly after midnight on November 21 made radar contact with the fleet. Maneuvering into position she launched six torpedoes at the Kongo. Two torpedoes were seen to hit the Kongo and one hit the destroyer Urakaze which sank with all hands. Two of Kongo’s boiler rooms were flooded and her speed reduced to 16 knots. When her speed dropped to 11 knots she broke off from the fleet and headed to the Port of Keelung in Formosa along with two destroyers. Fifteen minutes after separating from the fleet her list increased to 45 degrees and orders were given to abandon ship. Six minutes later her forward 14-inch magazine exploded, she quickly broke up and sank with the loss of over 1,200 of her crew including the commander of the Third Battleship division and her captain. Hmmmm...a helicopter on the angled flight deck.. in WWII ?
So this book seems to be the diary of Metome Ugaki, “Fading Victory”. Amazon blurb says it is supplemented with commentaries. These are not made clear by this simple reading. I think you can figure out which passages are commentaries. Examples: corrections like “actually, this or that happened”; or when Ugaki is mentioned by name. I hope this helps.
I have a feeling I would've liked Ellen. I liked the personal story. Good job!
I have had a bad taste in my mouth about Dug-Out-Doug for years now. I think my distaste for Dougy has only grown more intensely the more I hear of his conduct in WWII and Korea. He claimed to hold the rank of "Field Marshall" while in command of the native forces in the Philippines prior to being recalled to active duty in the US Army. What an ego.
Might want to look up Inchon and Holandia, also in 4 years of leading in WWll, he lost less men then America lost at the Battle of the Bulge. Thank God the Japanese or Chinese never had a leader as good. Too, had his Battle pan been followed the war in the Pacific might have ended in 1944, without the use of the BOMB. The book American Caeser is a good start.

I had no idea, until now, that Britain and US had so many ships in the Pacific in the spring of ‘42! According to this account, which I have no reason to doubt, the Japanese were sinking one hell of a lot allied vessels. Midway didn’t come a moment too soon!
The diary of admiral Ugaki is a chronological documentary of japanese decline, following exactly Yamamoto's prediction of how a war of attrition would transpire. The unwillingness or inability of the high command to accept this as inevitable and seek an end to the war caused tragic and unnecessary loss of untold thousands of lives and, but for the mercy of the US in 1945, would have been the complete end of Japan, nationally and culturally

So many men lost on both sides. RIP.

Photo is the Japanese heavy cruiser Takao, lead ship of her class, taken during sea trials in 1939. She was launched in May 1930 and commissioned on May 31, 1932. Takao was the only ship of her class to survive though she spent the last year of the war anchored at Singapore with severe damage from torpedoes during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She was too damaged to be towed to Japan for repairs so was anchored to use against air attacks. After the war she was sunk as a target ship for a British cruiser in October 1946.
Photo: Yamato during sea trials in Bungo Channel, October 20, 1941. For such a powerful Battleship she sure didn’t accomplish much.
I wish they would stop calling the front of a ship that wooden instrument that shoots arrows. Add a "B" to ow! and you've got it right. Then you can work on the correct pronunciation of forecastle - which is foc'sile. I know it looks odd, but every sailor in the world knows this one.
Yamamoto famous words were said in 1940, long before the USA had issued any empatgo of oil. You still read people who know little saying , The war against Japan was caused by the USA, BECAUSE OF THE OIL EMBARGO, that didnt exist until over a year after Tojo gave approval for war against the USA.

Once the Americans destroyed all of the newest shiny ships and aircraft, the Japanese had to use their Goodwill looking equipment Rust and all. The Japanese would sputter up with their ragged out ship and the Navy Sailors would have a loud Horse Laugh.

Why did the Japanese agree to the 5:5:3 Treaty it doesn’t seem to make sense? Is it because much of their technology was provided by and many of their ships were built in British ship yards and they didn’t want to lose this access?
So> the picture is CV 10 Yorktown, Essex class in postwar configuration with angled flight deck. Not the Yorktown that fight at Midway.
Correct
Great show
Thank you, very informative!👍👍👍👍
The kindness of the Filipinos to lost Americans brings tears to my eyes. They were and are such wonderful people.

"Haul-ass Halsey". First time I have heard that phrase. At Samar it fits.
HMS Victorious , in late 1942 after Guadalcanal Battles USA had no Aircraft Carriers left as they had all been sunk or damaged and UK loaned HMS Victorious to USA until the new build of Essex's began arriving beginning of 43, she was renamed USS Robin in US Service
This photo was taken in 1959.

7:24 Two hundred eighty-six 5,000 pound bombs? Hard to believe they were able to carry ordnance that large.
