Side Button Tutorial
In this video, I describe how I learned to tie the "side button" (AKA headhunter knot) from watching one of Jack Armstrong's videos a couple years ago. This is a knot that I use often on my bosals as the knot to hold the hanger in place. In this video, I am using it for small buttons on a set of reins.

Shop Update 2 (10/12/22) - Cutting Soga and Hanging to Dry
Просмотров 524Год назад
In this video, I discuss how I cut up my hides into sogas. I'm cutting a section into button soga during this video, which is 3/8" wide. For my body string sogas, I cut them into 5/8" wide strips. After the sogas are cut, they get hung over a fence to dry down. The purpose of hanging them up is to allow the curves in the soga to straighten out without having any of the fibers break. This makes ...

Heel Knot Interweave O2U2
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I describe the first interweave (O2U2 or over 2, under 2) of the heel knot doing a pineapple (AKA herringbone) interweave pattern. The heel knot is not finished at this point and still needs additional interweaves of O3U3, O4U4, and maybe even O5U5. The process of doing any of these interweaves is the same as this one in the way that you follow the string on the left on the way u...
Heel Knot Foundation of O1U1
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I show how to cast on the basic heel knot "skeleton" over your heel knot foundation. I use leather glued on the bottom of my bosals where the strings are run back through a ring knot. After it's glued on, I sand it to a good, symmetrical shape. This part is paramount in being able to get your heel knot to look nice in the end. Take your time at the end of braiding this O1U1 skele...
Two Part Turks Head Knot
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I show how to tie a two part Turks head knot from a single piece of leather latigo that's split into two strands. I used this button to make a loop closure for a set of romal reins I made recently. There are plenty of other applications for this button, so use your imagination!
Preparing Double Twist Cores (3/3)
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I describe what to do to get a smoothly finished double twist core for a quirt. I talk about how to use the calipers to achieve a consistent width down the entire length of a core and how to wrap them for a nice finish with electrical tape. This is important to achieve a slight degree of waterproofing.
Preparing Double Twist Cores (2/3)
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I cover how I finish the first layer of a double twist core before moving on to the second strip of rawhide. I go over the sanding portion as well as the taping portion. I also discuss a little about the two different philosophies regarding whether a core should be waterproofed or not. Lastly, I talk briefly about how to evaluate a core to determine whether it will be good or not...
Determining Core Size After Having Final String Size
Просмотров 7083 года назад
In this video, I explain how to determine my core size for a romal after braiding my rein body. This math can be used to determine the core size of any project after you already have your final string cut. I usually do this in reverse - start with my core and figure out my string size after the core. However, this way also works.
Preparing Double Twist Cores (1/3)
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, I cover how I twist rawhide cores in a single twist fashion and how I manage them as they dry. It's a simple process, but I wanted to show it because cores are the foundation upon which each of your projects are built. I will be making some follow-up videos showing how I complete my cores prior to braiding the body. I will also cover some of the different types of cores, such as ...

    • @RawhideEli
      @RawhideEli 7 месяцев назад

I don't measure the width of the foundation or the finished button to be honest. I do a trial run with whatever string I want to use to figure out how many bights I need to cover the foundations and go from there. Sometimes, the strings may need an adjustment to get them to cover just right. As far as the material of the foundation, this was done with cotton string and contact cement.
