I drove our 1971 128 for 194,000 miles from 1971 to 1982 (from high school, to college to working). 1,116cc OHC 80mm bore 55.5mm stroke 4 speed revved at 3,800rpm at 60mph. Handled like a puma on the curves. Loaded entire family of 5 with luggage from Los Angeles to San Fran and back in comfort (loaded shoes in the spare wheel in front). With no money I did all my own maintenance bumper to bumper. The only thing that I did not have to deal with was the electronics (knock on wood). To this day, my favorite car.

In 1990/91 lotus took some X180 Esprits and rebuilt as race cars rebranding them the X180R where the "R" represents "Race". The X180R was a dominant player in the World Challenge and Super Car series of the day to the point where SCCA required a detuning of the car in order for it continue racing.

116 mph, I sorry I had mine to 115, in 4 th gear. The blue lights came on before I could shift into 5 gear. My buddy say he got passed on the straight away near my house at 140 mph. Sorry I abused mine.

What a great looking car - such a classic design. Kind of reminds me of the mk1 VW Scirocco .....but better! The HPE was more a sporty hatchback, than an estate. Today, we call this type of car a 'sportback'; which only Audi seem to be making. Not a regular hatchback, nor a coupe. Such a shame Lancia, (and to a lesser extent Alfa Romeo) are no longer making such cars. SUV's have killed alot of car types...aswell as innovations in design. I wish we could go back to not having any SUV's on the roads. People might be better drivers again. Computer technology and electric cars have made us 'lazy' drivers. But the HPE reminds us all of what cars used to be like, and the sheer joy gained from driving, and owning them. Lancia, please bring us a 're-imagined' HPE for the 21st century ...just don't make it all-electric!

I would drive one

They were great cars. I worked on them professionally and drove them often. They had the same issues that all cars of that era had. They rusted quickly and they were only moderately dependable. That was the way cars were back then. They needed constant care to keep them up to snuff.

Nice informative video. I owned a series 1 in the early 70's that was fitted with Abarth exhaust. It was a magnificent vehicle with seductive exhaust note.

This 1600 Model was my first car. It was a joy to drive, but of course the biggest issue was the rust. But I still have fond memories.

When I was stationed in Germany in the 70's I had a series 2. A Fiat mechanic sold me a high performance engine for it and helped me install it. Big difference in power over the base engine. It had dual weber carbs. It would fly on the autobahn. I have great memories of driving in Germany.

Had rx4 4 door 13b auto. Magic. Sold it with 280,000k. Jap co auto bulletproof. Motor had just started to blow a bit of smoke. Flare yellow. Wish I still had it.

These are amongst the most beautiful sports cars ever designed - from any angle.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder of course, the series 1 is generally regarded as the prettiest of the 124 coupes , although I quite like the series 2. In the handling department, the series 1 is undoubtedly the finest of the 124 coupes. The later cars were slightly heavier but had more understeer built in to the suspension set up . Although still excellent by comparison to other RWD cars

It failed because it was simply horrendous - looked cheap and nasty - and appeared like a stretched Alpine. At school we laughed at how stupid people could be thinking anyone with "money" would buy such nonsense. Why would i go to a Talbot garage - surrounded by a Sunbeam or Avenger - when it was priced in merc / volvo / bmw territory?

I worked at a Fiat dealership in the mid 70’s and drove the 1800 twin cam versions. It was beautiful, exciting and sounded great. I have been fortunate to drive a lot of cars in my years, this one always stands out.

I saw this car today at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in upstate NY. Absolutely gorgeous car.
