I love the setting of Half life 2, you can feel how humanity truly is at its knees. Hell it almost feels like extinction is inevitable, Half Life 2 is truly one of the best Dystopias in gaming
Half Life's dystopia feels like a mixture of the best dystopias from other novels and concepts. In terms of chemical manipulation of the water thats a reference to Brave New World, or how theres no births anymore is a reference to Children of men and the tv screens with constant monitering is a reference to 1984. Everything else the combine does such as draining the ocean feels like something from Lovecraft (author), Valve really got the best dystopias and culminated it into hl2, extremely underrated

You have to remember than long before combine arrival earth was already weakend by portal storms and xen wildlife
7 hour war as a concept is honestly the weakest part of half life's lore. I understand the current combine on earth in HL2 is just a holding force but it's just unreasonable that it's somehow the same faction that wiped all the superpowers out, when they're still vulnerable to conventional small arms.

@@mujtaba_1315 Combine having that extreme of an overmatch against humanity makes the game and everything we "accomplish" in it almost completely pointless. It's a product of early 2000s storytelling and themes. The only possible answer to progress the story is an absurdly overpowered macguffin or another combine strength organization from somwhere else in space and doing all the work for them.
