W6/SC-445 is a summit very close to my QTH. It is a great summit to test gear, radios and antennas. SOTA QMX QRP CW and FT8 Operations - Excessive Heat, Wind and DX

Returned to one of my top listed summits to activate. The hike was during an excessive heat warning in southern California. I packed plenty of water (4L), hiked 15 mins and rested 5 mins in shade all the way up to the summit. Once on the summit , I setup a tarp to plenty of shade for myself as well as my equipment. The air temperature was 93F, direct sun was blazing and the wind speed was ~5-10...

In this video I remove the FSR aluminum radiator and electric fan. The radiator started leaking after 4K miles. I will be taking the radiator to be pressure tested to identify the location of the leak and hopefully the leak can be fixed with epoxy.

Spent a few hours testing the new F-Stop Tilopa backpack, setting up a new tarp for shade to beat the summer heat. QRP operations were performed on the QMX 20-10M transceiver using CW and FT8 modes. This radio was my first venture into QRP operating. Had both filters, as a combo installed W4RT, and it works great. I’m 77 now so it just sits on the shelf but I take it down and make contacts every month or so, love. Good video and love the location. WD4DDA 73

Yeah Tim K6OHY is a regular chaser. Great operator too. Ham radio is plain fun and nothing better than hiking and making contacts. It has been so hot this summer and this tarp has saved me 3X this summer when the temperature was too hot for my brain and radios. Even on this last activation the mcHF rig got too hot even in the shade. Thanks for watching
What are you using for a keyer on the kenwood? or do you even need one if your using a straight key?
HI Patrick, No Keyer. I switch back and forth between a Bencher or Speed -X Straight Key. I am saving up for a Bug to use with the Kenwood TS-830s so I can operate at a faster speed.

Are those 80series axles or modified 60axles? The reason I ask is I’m doing an 80 axle swap and like your wheel fitment.
These are 1995-97 80 series axles .
Great tutorial. I used it to get FT8 running on my QMX and iPhone SE. I also got SOTAmat working, with the same interface. If you haven't tried it yet, it's a good tool to have. Uses FT8 to trigger a spot on SOTA or POTA boards under any mode when you are out of cell range. I don't activate with FT8, I'm a CW op, but this allows me to post a spot that shows up on the POTA board, and then my subsequent CW RBN spots will get tracked on POTA.
Fantastic !!! I have not tried SOTAmat yet . I operate mostly CW too and use the RBN to spot me with the SOTA watch page. After my CW on the summit I’ll run FT8 while I’m relaxing or eating some snacks .
Sounds great. I’m sure it is a lot of fun and very satisfying. I’m trying to learn CW but damn it’s hard. I mean really frustrating to copy, especially. The breakthroughs, even the small ones, take days and are so minor. Hope to get there someday.
Have you looked into CW Ops or LICW ? It can be challenging , I still have those days where I can copy as well as I would like to. You will get there and don’t give up. Even if you are a 12 wpm just get on the air . And remember have fun .

And the times now and then that I recognize a letter in a confusing and relentless stream of dits and dahs is encouraging. Just plowing along to try to get on the air someday as I’m sure the fun level-and learning-will accelerate then. 73

Is there a major difference if i use an iPad instead of iPhone? Can you use Grid Tracker on your phone along with IFTX?
I have grid tracker on my MacBook for FT8. Grid tracker is not in the Apple App Store. That would be incredible if grid tracker could be used on the iPhone .

SSB is in the works. There is already a microphone installed on the QMX. I just built mine. You should notice a small hole on the front of the enclosure.

Yeah , my goal is to at least make 50 S2S in the next year. Pack to date is great for ham radio activities.

Roger that! Made an adapter cable with 10kQ and 22KQ resistors . Bamatech TPIII . It is really cool , these radios are highly hackable.

Github: phdlee/uvk5cec - Running Firmware CEC_0.3V. Works great so far. I have found that some keys have different resistance and dont work as well without making adjustments to CW AD12,3 or 4 in the menu. Bamatech TPIII and N0SA M5 keys work on default firmware settings.

The footage didn't capture how hot it really was. I m guessing 100F + in the direct sun. Luckily , when I did run out of water it was less than a 1/4 mile from the 4runner where I had a cache of additional water/electrolytes.

@KQ3Q I m calling CW on the HTX100 almost everyday with no luck yet. Had a few SSSB QSOs , but looking for a CW contact on the Radio Shack HTX. The filters are not great but once 10Ms opens im positive it would do just fine.
