This is a great roundtable. I would like to touch on an alternate thought about Grammarly vs. using Net Tutor or going to the tutoring center in person. It is all the same. Those are all tools that will correct grammar. So, what makes Grammarly prohibited? Doesn't it just offer suggestions? Doesn't the user still review the suggestion and accept it or change it? How is that different than using the Editor check in Word? These are all useful tools. Isn't Grammarly a form of tutoring? Surely it is or can be assessed as one. Take me for example. I cannot type without looking at the keyboard. When I try, I have massive misspellings in sentences from hitting the wrong keys. I have had this issue for most of my life. That point is saying that some grammar issues are not mental issues but hand-eye or muscle memory issues. Other students may also experience what I experience. Here is what I found that helps me because even the task of typing and watching myself type can cause me to lose a creative thought in the moment. Hope that makes sense. I must stop thinking about developing my idea because I must focus on hitting the right keys. What I have found is that the dictate feature in Word allows me to speak my thoughts out and then completely have it out to go back and see how I can break it up into a meaningful paper. But even auto dictate is still spelling words. No matter what each student uses for a tutoring tool, it can be seen or called cheating by anyone who is looking to call someone a cheater. Having one professor endorsing Grammarly or ChatGPT or Dictate or Net Tutor and another professor criminalizing ones they personally do not like is NOT a standard. Maybe this conversation is about partnerships? Does COM suggest Net Tutor because they pay for or seek government funds for it (even indirectly allocated)? A Grammarly Premium account is offered as a free tool for The University of Arizona students for their academic support use and is located within their Office 365 package. They even offer video tutorials in their writing center on how to use Grammarly and how to add it to their Microsoft Word. writingcenter.uagc.edu/grammarly I would differ, in opinion, with anyone calling Grammarly unethical to use. Why doesn’t COM offer this to its students as a part of the Office 365 package? Why is Grammarly not being advertised by educators as a learning tool equal to a tutoring service? #FoodForThought
