Lock Picking Paul

This channel is something to help chart my progress and explain my slightly bizarre hobby to those that know me and anyone who might find these videos enjoyable and or informative.
I've worked extensively in the Digital Security Industry and this is something of a happy extension to my long term profession
Lock picking for me is a challenge or puzzle to be solved, most physical security attacks are brute force, lock picking is more similar to a practiced art and is generally not a practical way to break security due to the time and skill required. Where I do encounter a design flaw or other weakness then I feel this information should be in the public to domain to improve user awareness, if people keep buying poor quality locks then the manufacturers will keep making them. Security by Obscurity benefits no one.
Stay legal! Don't pick locks that you don't own. Don't pick locks in use, at some point you'll brick a lock trying to get it open, ideally it won't be the one to your house

Hi, I don't think that impressioning tools work with Ace locks, even if you have one that fits the locks have different rate springs on the pins that prevents impressioning tools from working, sorry I cant help

Awesome video Paul. Defo a love hate relationship with these kind of locks. I have found that a 410 either opens easy or not so easy, more often than not they are not so easy. This one was being a bit stubborn, didn't even want to stand up. All the best with your entry LPP.

Oh yes, I'd use this technique to work out if there was something here and if its only 1 or 2 then recover them manually but if it's got loads of data then switch over to a tool like Autopsy which will automate the file carving, this is more to show whats going on 'under the hood' and build some familiarity with using Hex Editors

This same technique can be used for any type of file as long as you know the Hex header and footer of the file type you're trying to find - google is your friend HxD can be found at the following link, I am not a beneficiary in any way, its just a great tool. mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/ Please note, be very careful when accessing a hard drive with this tool, open it in read only mode, if you make a write change to disk surface you need to really know what you are doing, it's fine to use in the way shown in this demo where the recovered data is written out to a separate disk, also making write changes to a disk you are trying to recover from could cause further data loss.
