My sit down with the incredible Roman historian and author Emma Southon, who has written some of my absolute favorite history books (Agrippina, A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, A Rome of Rome's Own). Some of the topics include: - Why Roman history? - Cicero vs. Clodia - Southon's writing style and dealing w/bias in history - Which Roman emperor would Emma let her metaphorical dau...

❤❤
I want that shirt, where can I get it?
Handsome with brains 😅
Great advice, as always! I see you have Hiroshima by Sheftall on the shelf. Have you read it? Just picked it up! It's probably pretty important to start reading it now, given everything going on in the world 😅
What audiobook speed do you default to when immersion reading?
Usually 1.5x, sometimes faster depending on the narrator
How do you include playing Fallout games into your routine? lol
I still get a couple hours here and there to play, I'm not a robot
Have you read Napoleon the great?
Is that Gunther behind you? 🤨
Der Ringgeneral!
I almost skipped this cause I’ve seen a lot of “how to read more books” videos, but this was great because you gave such good examples of how you fit reading into your life!
Appreciate that, glad it helped!
need a library and gym tour!
Any recs for books on Napoleon?
The biggest one for me has been a combination: 1) A kindle 2) My work breaks. I walk along the same little trek of road each break while reading. If a particular book REALLY snags my attention, I'll take time to visit my little corner at the library, or read at my desk between MMORPG dungeon queues, or in bed to steal some hours for reading from sleeping. The Kindle was the only thing that got me back into reading, though. EDIT: Also, I will only ever have TWO books designated as TBR on my device at a time. Preferably ONE, but sometimes I see a deal for another big one coming up. This better helps me focus on the primary book, as I get decision fatigue and burn out like no other.
Thank you for the tips, Michael. I have a deep passion for the intellectual life, and reading is at the heart of it. I’m often amazed by how much I’ve learned over the past few years. I work from home and have a structured reading schedule. On weekdays, I read The Iliad in Spanish from 5:00 to 6:30 PM and The Power Broker by Robert Caro (which I noticed on your shelf) from 9:00 to 10:30 PM. On weekends, I dedicate 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM to reading Ulysses (The Gabler Edition) alongside Ulysses Annotated Notes for James Joyce's Ulysses and Ulises in Spanish. Lastly, in the bathroom, I keep Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter, a profoundly challenging book that has transformed my perspective. Its complexity allows me to digest 4-6 pages per session, making it ideal for bathroom reading.
Biggest one for me is reading when I am excited to read. If I’m forcing myself to sit down and read a book when I’d rather be doing something else then I’m more prone to falling asleep or being on my phone.
Great video and great advice. My biggest tip can tack onto the mood reading tip, and that's to put down a book if you're not enjoying it. Maybe it's just not the mood at the time and you can try again at a different time, or maybe it's just not for you, even if it comes highly recommended.
Normalize DNF'ing
I already do the before bed one but im going to audit my day, thanks for this. I also work from home and I need to be better. I also worked in sports media, still in media but yeah you make great points.
🤜🤛
Can't thank you enough for this "immersion reading" idea. The reason I don't finish books, is because my lack of focus pulls me other places. This has been incredibly helpful. I found you through IG and Roman Republic recommendations (excellent choice - I'm a quarter way through The Storm before the Storm) and I've already read more than I had in previous 5 years. I've already teed up history of England for next set of recommendations. Maybe come back to Roman Empire after that. But I'm really in Irish history. Either way - thanks again!!
Hey thank you for the kind words, I'm thrilled my recs and tips are helping you!
Just completed the lost hero gonna start son of Neptune from tomorrow
Almost at the end of The Blade Itself, really enjoying it!
And it only gets better!
Completely agree with all of these tips!
Something helps me is embracing DNFing. Life is too short to read books you’re not enjoying and DNFing helps me from getting into reading slumps as well. Also, I discovered immersion reading this year and it’s been a total game changer. I love your idea of a burner phone to keep from distractions, too. Great video!
Great tips! I will read Lies as soon as I have completed my Abercrombie era
Super helpful tips, much appreciated!
Currently switching between 'The Shining' by Stephen King and 'SPQR' by Mary Beard.
I'm halfway through a reread of The Three Musketeers by Dumas. Also halfway through Prophet Song by Paul Lynch--I read a lot of dystopian novels but this one's really giving me anxiety. Also started The Will of the Many by James Islington--so far, it's better than I expected.
Just started the blade itself for the first time hope its as good as everyone says
Almost half though Master of the Senate.
im nearly finished with kafka on the shore by haruki murakami, but im also reading waiting for the fear by oguz atay. i highly recommend both but i think the latter is exceptional!
I read Kafka on the Shore years ago and really enjoyed it. I'll check out the other
1/3 of the way through The Anarchy, only 1 chapter left of How the Word Was Passed and just starting, The Shadow of the Gods tomorrow.
How are you liking How the Word is Passed?
I see Fall of the Ottomans on your shelf. It's a great read.
If you can make a video on your book collection that would be helpful
Hasan piker if he was bald
Love these tips! I recently got back into reading, but haven’t really found many books that I actually enjoyed. Many books were recommended to me by book groups or friends. I read them, despite the fact that they didn’t make me happy, and I’m in a reading rut atm. Do you have any suggestions to get out of that rut? Any tips to find books that I would actually like?
Look for specific niches of a type of reading experience you want and look for that. I now have a tbr of over 450 books based off so many niches. It just depends on my mood what I feel like reading but lord knows I have a book for it now.
Also, I prefer book stacking. I read 3 books at a time. Some are more accessible and easy to read than others so I'll read the tough stuff, then the medium, then the easy. I read over 2k pages a month this way and some of it is super dense boring info while being stacked with awesome fantasy or sci fi
this is a great tip, I usually have one nonfiction, one fiction, and one manga going simultaneously. the separation of genres helps me not get confused, and I just pick up whichever one I'm in the mood for when it's time to read
Do you know any books about the history of the subcontinent, Middle East or Islamic/Muslim history?
Have you read Destiny Disrupted? That's a great intro
More smarter is improper grammar because if you say, “ more smart” it is implied that you are getting smarter so there is no need to combine the two.😊
Your being pedantic.
watch Always Sunny
Have you checked out The Roman Empire and the Silk Routes by Raoul Mcloughlin? I found it fascinating!
I was too busy looking at your biceps…❤
Not going to read those books. But I'm going to give you an up vote for actually providing sources for Alexander the Great!
Alexander the Goat
The respect!!!
smarter*
not according to Mac
It’s either “more smart” or “smarter” dude
@@RexKing-lc1tflearn how references work
Wait this video was about books? I was lookin at them GUNZ
I know they look like he might be swole but then you be like nope I guess they’re no so great. They remind me of real muscles but smaller because I’m here to listen about Alexander Hamilton bruh the GOAT of secretaries of the treasury. But then I’m like oh I wish I had a Hephaestion as we rode bareback across Persia on Bucephalus oh yeah that’s great. And you’re right. Jacked AF. Looking good. ❤❤❤
You are a chad scholar. So cool. Love the channel
“more smarter” PUTTIN THAT KNOWLEDGE TO GOOD USE BUD
Hope you love the rest of The Fury of the Gods! Big finale... you may be onto something....
Read 3 of these. They keep making the same books on Alexander, like they can make a book on his legacy and the impact it had on other great men from Hannibal, Caesar, Napoleon, etc or they can make a book on his tomb. Alexander and Aristotle will be a good small read also if they make it.
Any book recommendations on the following topics: Cold War, Indo-China conflict and Europe during 1919-1945 period? 😊😊
I love your channel so much
Thank you!
We all know you don’t eat popcorn. Look at those guns!
I’ve seen you talk about Rubicon here and on your instagram a few times. Just got it in a second-hand bookstore, really looking forward to reading it!
Hope you love it!
