    4:19 OOOOOOOOOkeeeeeeeeeiiii... i hope the mahnificient deal is not expired yet If we have a hypothetical fictional material that's light and solid enough, to armor made from it be kind of compared to medieval armor at point of weight and thickness, its get an abilty to prevent almost any popular modern handheld firearms bullet penetration - so basically a fictional ceramic made buletproof solid plates armour. So the quastion is: what the shape shall it be to make a wearer get a little as possible of the bullet energy when he get shooted (maybe the shapes thats do not stop but make bullets ricoshet). Also ther is should be a helm, thats shall prevent a wearer from lossing his consciousness after getting a direct hit into thats Also, for usability reson, we do not arm the neck or other small hi-moving points, to don't interfere a person’s free movement and firearms handling

    • @ArmourArtist
      @ArmourArtist Месяц назад

      Some modern materials would let us build a level 3A armour for the same weight as about 3mm, level 4 for a bit over 4mm and level 2 for about 2mm of steel. So it would be on the heavy end but we could build it. There is also some good exoskeleton tec that would make it more manageable. Yes curved surfaces are going to be better as unless it is a perfect right angle to the point of impact it should redirect some energy away at an angle. Unless this material is designed to catch the bullet and deform. A historical shape with a central ridge would probably be best but you don't want something that sticks out too far for if you need to go prone. You could design something like a jousting helmet to let you take a shot in the face but it could really restrict your neck movement. I think something like a bevor that locks to the breastplate would be better. You could lock it down when you want extra protection but then unlock it when you want to be able to look around easier. I would still like to protect the limbs from frag with light armour. As in a lot of wars your more likely to get fragged than shot. That was true in ww1 and it is still true today.

    • @Van_Darkhole
      @Van_Darkhole Месяц назад

      @@ArmourArtist Thanks for the ansver! a bevor, yeah that's may be a good idea, about fragged indeed, but i dont think an extra weight like a chain mail on a non vital parts* its a proper idea, may be something like very durable but light cloth. cause to extra defend a legs cost a lot of weight, and a lot of moeny. But also I personaly visualize it not really in a modern really, but more in a alternative si-fi fictional fantasy with some sort of chivalry like a very conservative and elite sodiers orden.

    • @Van_Darkhole
      @Van_Darkhole Месяц назад

      maybe it should look like a bevor + modern helmet, i'm also really want to make a cool looking solid helmet (something like mandalorian one) but it's kinda pointless if after hit you skull be destroyed

      @@ArmourArtist it is actually made out of 2.7 mm mild steel from culvert pipes. It is flexible to wear and works really nicely, I added the extra rivets so blades couldn’t get through the cracks (and because there were huge gaps that I didn’t want to try to hammer together) I did make a few changes, but overall I followed the templates. I’m making this armor because I have always loved the idea of fighting in armor and I actually have a group of people who I’m making armor for as well, so your new chest plate design will come in handy.

    • @ArmourArtist

      @@Ckaldren Wow that is very thick armour. I like to attach the plates together with a nut and bolt where the centre rivets go . place the outer plate on the anvil and hammer the inner plate into the outer one. I also do a lot of bending by hand to get the curves to match up. Then really press them together tight tight to place the holes for the rivets. So I can get that gap down to 1mm. If I used heat I think I would get it to 0mm. I hope the new templates help you with your next projects.

    Just came from watching shad's vid. Well done 👍 As far as it not being "professional" or "realistic"...I would think a lot of guys back then were just making it up as they went along-copying others and maybe some teaching as an apprentice. There was no internet and i doubt most people even had access to any kind of reference material like books or schematics. So yea....I think a lot of them just learned by doing similar to the process you're going thru

    • @ArmourArtist
      @ArmourArtist 3 месяца назад

      Thank you. In this period trades like armouring were controlled by guilds and used an apprenticeship style of training. There were major workshops and centres of production. I would love to go do some armouring with other more skilled smiths as I would learn a lot faster than doing it myself. I have found one who lives 2 hours away, so maybe I will be able to get out one weeked and get on the tools. He also has a youtube channel Ironcrown workshop. If your interested.

  • @jungoder1085

    Tbf a lot of the weird stuff from Japan came from the edo period when there wasn’t any war so most of it was made as basically ceremonial stuff You should look into late sengoku period stuff from the late 15th to the start of the 17th century the armour design starts mirroring a lot of 14th century transitional plate armour from Europe During the mid 16th century they ended up getting guns and and access to European cuirasses and open helmets from the Portuguese though which inspired their homemade bullet proofed cuirasses But the European stuff was better made and a big status symbol, if used the European helmets and cuirasses were usually integrated into the Japanese stuff like with the Japanese equivalent to the fauld or their neck guards being attached to morions and pikemen’s pots These were called nanban gusoku Sengoku armour > edo armour

    • @ArmourArtist
      @ArmourArtist 4 месяца назад

      Thank you for the great reply. Yer I only know a very little about japanese armour but enough to realise that I know basically nothing. Yes I have heard a lot of the more extreme helmet crests were ceremonial from the time of peace. Yes it really does mirror the 14th century european kit. I have been tempted to either build a harness by cherry picking out and mismatching european examples that are as close as I can to japanese examples or see what it would be like if a european armourer tried to recreate a japanese harness. One day I will get around to building some japanese kit but I have not decided if I want to make a historical or fantasy verion. I like to use nanban armour as an example when I am telling people that plate armour could stop muskets as there is an easy to find example that has atleast 7 bullet dints if you do a google image search. Thanks again for the comment.

    "...unless you're polish and the winged hussars arrived." had me. Also because Theoden's armour is so heavily inspired by huszár/hussar armour it wouldn't be difficult to come to the conclusion: so was his helmet. In which case it's just the fantasy version of a lobster pot or zischagge that the hungarian and polish cavalry used. Which still comes from the angl-saxon and that from the roman one, but by that time it wasn't quite the same. Great video btw 👍

    • @ArmourArtist
      @ArmourArtist 6 месяцев назад

      Thank you. I do see the similarities Theoden's helmet has with a polish lobster pot helmet with the cheek plates and hints of the articulation at the back. I think the over all look is more late roman or anglo-saxon. I think they wanted Rohan to have a proto anglo-saxon look and Theoden's helmet is just a super fancy version. Also the Hussars were trying to look roman with some even using scale armour. So I have a strong suspicion that the Polish Lobster Pot helmet is also trying to look like a roman helmet.

    chainmail is DEFINITELY heavier than plate by quite a bit. I have a riveted short sleeve shirt and almost full plate, and i can confidently say that the shirt alone is far heavier than the plate without chainmail. The shirt isnt exactly form fitted to me as i dont yet have the skills or knowledge to tailor it myself, but it fits pretty nicely, so i think i can be confident in my statement. IMO, chainmail alone is NOT worth if for an adventurer. The near immunity to slashing damage doesnt mean much if you have no protection against bludgeoning damage. if you can already handle the weight, i'd get a small breastplate to pair with the chainmail, like the churburg style
