The BEST Dubbing Brush Table for Fly Tying (Oasis Benches)
I've gotten a myriad of requests for a dubbing brush video, so here you go!
In this video I discuss the various techniques that I use to make dubbing brushes on the Oasis Benches Dubbing Brush Table. I've made a couple hundred brushes on this table so far and I am beyond pleased with it. Dubbing brushes are used to make flies or segments of flies in an efficient manner.
- I use Master Supply Wire in 28g, 32g, and 34g (lower number, higher thickness), one pair of wire cutters/flush cutters, and a fine wire pet brush-

GameChanger Fly - Tying, Trimming, Discussion
Просмотров 20 тыс.3 года назад
This is a video about tying, trimming, and adding eyes to a GameChanger Fly. This is a fly that has become popularized by Blane Chocklett, who recently released a book called GameChanger. In this video I use the following materials: 1. Mop Tail (Part of cleaning products, can be subbed for marabou, or synthetic tails). 2. Articulated Shanks (1 Tail, 2 x ~10mm, 2 x ~15mm - I make my own). 3. Dub...
Creating Shanks for Articulated Flies/GameChanger
Просмотров 18 тыс.3 года назад
This is a brief video of creating shanks for articulated flies such as a GameChanger. The wire used is Malin Hardwire #12 - 180lb Test. Tools are needle-nose pliers, 1.5mm one step looper tool, and a 2.25mm one step looper tool. These items can be purchased via Amazon or Ebay.
Awesome fly!!!! If you don’t mind sharing what kind of dubbing/materials did you use to make your brush?!
@@treysonnorton488 this is poly yarn (EP/congo hair/etc) and Angelina fiber/angel hair flash
@@mcfallflies do you have a video of how you made that exact one? Are you using ep fibers you’d buy at a fly shop or making your own out of Bonnie cord/craft store fibers?
Thanks for sharing! How do you make your own shanks? Sorry if others have asked ... I have some jewelry pins that may work well Awesome video!
@@jtwhicker I’ve got another video on my channel that talks about this! Thanks!
@@mcfallflies thanks!
Where can you purchase the looping tools awesome video
what size wire would you use for the 1.5mm one step looper. I want to try and make 6mm and 8mm shanks
The original shank has a triangle on one end. Those swim much different. If you do respond to this theres a few ways of getting the bend right. Id like to see em.
I recently purchased about 8000 dry fly and nymphs from China. The whole lot was about $40. I have been clipping and sacrificing some of the hooks to make these shanks. The beauty of it is the eye of the hook is already made on one side of the shank. I am able to make micro shanks quickly and easily. I have been experimenting with different articulated streamers. Making my own shanks saves money and I can build multiple segments at a time and build up a streamer as needed. I have mixed and matched color segments of material depending on the water conditions of where I am fishing. Awesome video! Good tips! Tight lines all!
Where did you buy that many? Thats wild
I love making my own shanks with this tool. I also use orthodontic pliers that were made for making braces. I'm hoping that someone will figure out how to make the next gen shanks with the triangular loops soon...
Great tie and one of the best I’ve seen on RUclips as far as clarity of video, description of technique and materials used. Great resource you’ve made here for new tiers and many useful tips and tricks. As far as the finished product goes, the trimming being done all at once at the end of the tying process seems to work better for me as well as I feel I have more control over the finished shape of the fly. Again, great tie!
Somehow I missed this, thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. Comments like these make the tedious filming and editing worth it!
@@mcfallflies glad to be a part of what makes it worth while. I spend a lot of time unfortunately watching RUclips just due to my disabilities that were received in Combat while serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and the remainder of time that isn’t spent watching is spent tying. I do on the upside spend way more time than most tying myself and so I have shortened the learning curve as I tie almost daily, and have for more than five years. However, filming and tying is an entirely different beast, but honestly, just know a good demonstration when I see one. Keep up the good work, I live for videos like these
Going to buy one
I bought the oasis bench few years ago, been using the small spools of wire from the fly shops . Where are you getting the large wire spools ? Love the brushes that the oasis makes ! What sz wires do you like to use depending on materials and type of fly?
What weight rod/line do you use for these flies?
6-8wt for this size most of the time!
What scissors would you recommend for the detailed trimming?
Sorry I’m just now seeing some of these comments! I use anadromous fly company scissors for all my tying. I love the tungsten carbide hair scissors and razor scissors.
Excellent tips, thanks!
That was wonderful so I not crazy about back spin from the opposite end thank you I'm going to build myself a table you're table is just how I'm doing it. Thanks
Excellent video Ryan. Thought I was right there with you!!!!
Thanks Preston!
Excellent tutorial Ryan! Thanks for sharing Gonna get my machine out and start spinning
Following you on IG your changers are killer gonna try my hand at some soon thanks for the great videos
I really appreciate the feedback and I'm glad to know that you've found some value from the content. I hope to make a few more videos this year if things quiet down in life a bit.
Found you from working class fisherman ✌️
Came from the gram, wondering if you will show how to tie with the foam
Thanks for the inquiry. I don't have a video tying that. You can find a tying video at Beast Brushes Website, by the person who originally tied it, Chris Adams. Best of luck!
Great video mate, watched it, then bought all the gear, now I am making my own game changers!!!
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback- have fun!
Guess who just bought one of these....I'll give you a hint. He's me.
Never saw this comment! Heck yeah brother!
@@mcfallflies building my reputation off of it now. Lol
Love seeing your slow water game changers on insta. Now that I've started tying my own changers this was so helpful. Especially all of the trimming advice and the really well captured footage!
Thanks for the feedback! Shoot me a message on IG if you ever have any questions!
Very professionally done video and Thank you So Very much!! I have a couple of questions please, 1- What kind of camera and lens did you use?! 2- Also would you please give the name of your "machine" the make and place of purchase please! Thanks again ☺️
Thanks for your feedback! This was filmed on a Canon Rebel and iPhones. And the dubbing brush table is linked in the description 👍🏻
I was watching this again. What size would you say your brushes are if you don't mind sharing.
Hey there! It’s been a while since I made that video, so I’m not sure exactly. I do know that now I’m usually tying a 3-4” fly with about 15” of brush. That depends on the density of the brush of course, but that’s a good rule of thumb for me. About 1” of fly to 4” of brush.
@@mcfallflies Good information thank you, I was interested in the diameter or length of material. I made a small brush table and just was wondering how long you cut your materials.
@@barnman73 ahh! For a 4” fly I don’t usually want my total brush width/diameter to be any more than 2”. You can play around with it and find what works best for you. Essentially double the distance between your hook shank and hook point/gap.
Extremely well produced video. Love the clean up shot.
Thanks so much for your feedback! Took a while to film and edit so I’m glad to know it’s appreciated.
What gauge wire do you use to make your game changer spines?
131lb or 180lb depending on the size of shank/application.
Excellent video. Thank you very much. Question: How do you like the Master Wire Supply wire? I've used UTC wire in the past and have had problems with the wire breaking during spinning. Is the Master Wire Supply prone to breakage?
I only use the master wire. All wire breaks when it’s been tightened enough or been bent back and forth (aggressive brushing). Try decreasing the amount of material, brushing softly, or tightening less and see if that helps!
@@mcfallflies Will do. Thanks again!
Great video Ryan!...awesome videography and narrative and that brush looks amazing!
Thanks Rick!
Watching this video made me hungry.
Great tying, I wonder if this streamer becames too heavy when casting it. Morphologically is stunning.
Good question! But no, it’s relatively light. It sheds immediately with the first false cast.
When you counter spin the brush aren't unwinding that end ?
I spin the direction that tightens, not the direction that unwinds.
what size wire did you use on the last brush you made, the one with the flash in it. Great video finally someone who explains the fine points of brush making ...thanks.
That was 28g, which is pretty darn heavy. You could probably use 30g with fair utility as well.
What brand are ur dubbing brushes
Homemade!
I bought a 2nd brush maker a couple years ago and asked the seller/maker if it was possible to spin it on both sides. I think he thought that was a weird question. Now here you are with THAT brush maker!! I like to demo making brushes at ff shows. It's more fun when I can have someone from the audience do it (the smaller brushes!). I tie the long fiber brushes for musky and it takes me much longer to spin them out than what I observed here. Excellent brush maker!!!
It is a great machine. Rick did a great job designing it.
@@mcfallflies I just watched your excellent video again. Are there any concerns about or tips for removing the table when you are spinning with the longer fibers? That would be my only concern with this design. Thanks!
Great video. With the wire, is it easy to wrap on the hook? Thanks in advance.
Incredibly easy. I use it on 75% of my flies or so.
Hi Ryan, A simple question, is the 1.5mm 1-step looper tool slightly smaller than the 2.25mm tool and is the head not quite s beefy either?
Smaller diameter head, so yes to both.
Thanks for sharing
Good
Thanks for video Ryan. Have you had any problems with the 1-step looper bending the MALIN .029" Hard Leader Wire? Like failing to bend MALIN wire properly or breaking the 1-step looper itself tyring to bend that type of wire?
Mine tools are still working like day 1 and I’ve made hundreds if not thousands of shanks!
Красивый материал, интересное видео, лайк и подписка 👍🤝👋🔔
I haven't tied a fly for 10 years, but I still love to see new things and learn. Do you use wire, so they don't fall apart - like making thin pipe cleaners.?
Yep! Also so that you can clip it at any point in the brush and it doesn’t unravel!
@@mcfallflies Cool. And the flies can take more bites without falling apart, I guess - not that any of my flies have lived that hard a life.. By the way, I used to tie with discarded fireline, that I found when fishing, to make them "indestructable". But as time went by, I found less and less of it - a good change created by the "over the hill" enviormentalist focus.
Great Video! Thanks for the info.
Where are you buying that wire at??
Amazon or fishing suppliers.
Nice work, thanks for sharing. I'm spinning up Hareline Magnum Frost-tip Rabbit and Midge Flash, man does it look sexy. The black and orange, & black and fuscia looks sick! Bonus - the leftover leather strip makes for a great leech. Tight lines.
I’ll have to give it a shot sometime! Thanks for commenting!
@@mcfallflies If you work with fur and hide (you should), you need to invest in a Pettijean Magic Tool, or Stonfo. Kind of pricey, but makes managing rabbit and finn racoon easier. Tight lines.
Thanks again. I do have a question. What are the factors that have you center the material on the wire vs off setting it to one side before spinning the wire?
Personal preference. Half and half makes for a more dense/less wide brush. Offset let’s the brush be more light but allows for a wider brush. Does that make sense?
@@mcfallflies A very good question and a very helpful answer! Thanks!
Nice work. I use lots of natural fibers (temple fox, marble fox, finn racoon, rabbit) which have a natural taper, so they are offset. Midge flash lays down nicely, so I center it.
Do you think it makes sense to make long fibers from below, then short, and then long again?
I’m not 100% sure what you mean. Could you ask a different way?
@@mcfallflies at 4:40 am you lay down first the white and yellow material (short), then the flash. At 5:10 am, you lay down the long brown material, and so on. Then you twist the material. The result is a brush where the short material protrudes from the outside and the long material remains inside. And if you do the opposite: lay long fibers, then short ones, so that as a result you get a brush, where the short fibers will be inside, like a long support. I don't know how else I can explain it.
@@sia2344 I understand what you’re saying now. I’m not sure that it makes a difference once you wrap the brush around the hook. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the way you mentioned though.
On your bulkhead/predator brushes you said you like a dense core. What material makes it sense? EP fibres?
Yep! That’s a good start for sure. Something that will build up and push some water.
Could you use EP fibres for the core and craft fur on top? Have you used the Steve Farrar blend for brushes?
@@mikestone9415 that could work. The best advice is to try a brush and adjust for what you want more or less of. I’ve used very similar fibers to the SF blend line.
