Interesting notes on the Ben Nevis. Thanks for sharing. Ben Nevis is usually the only "malty" whisky that I'm a fan of; it's generally a complicated whisky but it sounds like the dilution to 46% may have limited some of that character.
Hello Gav, thank you for taking us through these four different whiskies. A lot of excellent information. The Ardmore indeed sounds like an excellent whisky. Thank you especially for taking the time to talk about the flavours/aromas you were encountering, but also for talking about the meaning of some of the terms that you use such as "furniture polish" and some others. You had already kindly addressed that topic to me in the comments of an earlier video, but you explained it even more clearly here, and I think you did so very successfully. There probably is such a thing as using too many words for flavours/aromas, theoretically, but I still much prefer reviewers to use more words--if they want to do so--because you/they are trying to evoke a sensory experience for us viewers/listeners using just spoken words. Your description of entering an old furniture shop and the smells one can encounter in that setting was very evocative, useful and successful, cheers! I don't expect you to do that every time, only on the occasions when you feel it may be useful as here. A minor aside: I noticed during this video that you sometimes lent forward to read the notes from Cadenheads, and when you did that the sound from the microphone became noticeably louder and clearer. Please note that the sound in this video was generally fine, but it led me to wonder about the positioning, or direction, of your microphone. Something Ralfy talked about awhile ago when he updated his microphone was how directional these devices can be, i.e. they very much do focus narrowly forwards and much less-so to the sides/more widely. He used a technical term for the type of microphone but I can't recall it at present. You usually have your microphone to your side while you face forward towards the camera. One can visualise imaginary lines in the air, one forward from your mouth and one forward from the microphone, a bit like crossed swords in fencing. They're touching but not "aligned". I wonder whether your microphone might be better positioned somewhere underneath, above, or alongside the camera, i..e. roughly along the same imaginary line running from your mouth/face forward to the camera? I suspect, however, that you may have already considered that, and that the problem you have may be in terms of table space or lack thereof? Please do not stress about this, it's pretty minor, I'm merely raising it out of possible interest to you that there did seem to be quite a difference in the audio and it seemed like it was to do with directionality. Please note that I am most definitely *not* asking you to lean forward all the time simply for the sound, as that would be too uncomfortable for you.
Thank you for your comments a few things to think about
The 27yo is a teaspooned Glenfiddich
Hi Gav, Did you get a 20cl bottle from the vaults at the CAD at the courtyards festival?
Wow, great choices, Gav!
Not water even to spread and idetify the flavours and smells...??
Thanks for shining a light on these whiskies Gavin Love your distinctive way of reviewing. Up front I'm most interested in the Enigma. Slàinte mhath
Thanks for sharing these, Gav. Interested in your take on the Ben Nevis; that's the one that caught my eye. See you later for TED.
Your time at the Cadenheads courtyard event sounds wonderful, Gav. Thanks for sharing a bit of that with us. Please note that I have no wish to add extra work to what you're already doing with this channel, but I have a question: would it be worthwhile doing a very short "sound check" before you start the tasting? I don't mean part of what you record for us, but just as a means of checking your recording/computer systems before you start tasting the whiskies? That would hopefully help you to not have to re-record any of these sessions due to issues with the sound. The above is only a question/suggestion, and my purpose is to hopefully save you time/extra bother, rather than adding to your workload.
100% Gav, non stop laughing and drinking*. Incredible event with a great bunch of people. *bit of dancing and singing too 😂
Great review🎉
Thanks for reviewing Gavin. Have tried many Bruichladdich, but not yet a bottling by Whisky Broker. Slàinte mhath
Just opened a bottle and my first thought was 'beef jerky'
Nice one Gav. Great to see you and the Edinburg gang at Cadenheads Campbeltown
Great to see you at Cadenheads Campbeltown Gav
I believe the 15yo Irish Spirits Drink is a Bushmills. At least that's what I thought when I tried it.
Hi Gav, many thanks for this review. This whiskey is high on the radar at Cadenheads at the moment and I had a bottle delivered yesterday, so tried it last night. Like with most whiskys it need time to sit in the bottle, once the first few drams have been discharged and for it to develop. I did this with Cadenheads Union from Brazil , 12 months in it has developed into a great dram. With this Benrinnes, I am looking forward to the tomato vine tasting notes, which are on the tasting profile.
Good stuff Gav. Just wondering how many bottles do you have in your stash?
Thanks for shining a light on these bottlings, Gavin. Have yet to open and try the only one I have (somewhere in the cabinet). Slàinte mhath
Gav, this is an excellent, analytical, descriptive tasting. I can see you're working hard and we all get the benefit. Thank you very much for sharing you thoughts about this whisky with us. It sounds like a very good whisky and maybe it will develop still further as you get down below the shoulder. Have a great time with the "hooligans". Cheers!
Good stuff, Gav. I tried this in the shop and thought it was interesting. Not the style of whisky I would typically go for, but it's an enjoyable dram nonetheless.
It is a special whisky, thank you for sharing your thoughts Gav.
Great to see you are enjoying the springbank 30
They always say you need to get friendly with your local retailers to have a chance of getting hold of Springbank but my nearest stockists in NW England are either marking it up like b*stards or have it allocated to the same customers every year. I gave up chasing. Just wish Springbank would give us mortals a chance of getting one - I’d be happy with a 5cl bottle just to try it.
Thanks for the review! Sounds ‘similar’ to the ‘unpeated’ batches bottled for the Diageo Special Releases. Salud! 💪🏼🥃
It is definitely peated light peat more on the pallet than on the nose
Great video Gav - and lovely to see someone enjoying something this special, and not putting it up for auction. Sláinte.
Unsurprisingly it sounds like a belter. Enjoy!
nice one Gav, i need to get mine open soon fella....
Thanks for the review Gav. The 32 yr B2B bottle i tasted was just sublime and can only imagine what this one tastes like. Fair play for opening and enjoying them. Im a bit of a one for ferretting bottles away that I WILL open but just not now, when what i should be doing is getting them tasted. Unfortunately outside of what i would want to pay myself but horses for courses as they. 👍 say.
It's not just 2000 pounds now, in the US that sells everyday on the shelf for the equivalent of 2500 pounds. It's available any day you want it, but it's silly money.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Springbank, Gavin. Great you've opened the bottle and enjoy it. For me this whisky is just too expensive... Slàinte mhath
Lucky man Gav! Enjoy…..
Thanks for your impressions! Are you mad? I don’t think so, just enjoying your bottles as you want it. Salud! 💪🏼🥃
Thanks
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this whisky, Gav. It sounds exceptional. Enjoy your drams.
Great to see it being enjoyed . Nice one Gav
im really enjoying this years 30 year old - absolute stunner
Sounds lovely when it opens up, Gav, thank you. As you know, whiskies for me are interesting to learn about regardless of whether they're available or not, because many of them aren't/never will be, here. Not sure if you're interested but the whiskies from the Cadenheads pack that you reviewed 11 months ago, including Enigmas 25 & 15 (blend of Hazelburn 15 & Kilkerran 16), have just now reached my market. I put my name down for the E15 straight away. I haven't tried drinking first and then smelling second, but could be worth an experiment or two. Cheers!
Sounds a cracker that Gavin. Never had a bad Caol ila and very consistent..In honesty i like the big peaty cask strength monsters but i do like the standard 12 as well. Ive currently got a BBR Royal Mile exclusive 10yr 2019 going at the moment which is lovely but never got round to a oloroso cask which i might need to put on the list. Cheers
Interesting dram you have this time, Gavin. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Slàinte mhath
Sounds interesting. I do very much prefer Caol Ila from a oloroso or PX cask. They go so well together. Slainte 👍
Top work again Gav! Raasay has been slept on for a while, good to see you put it back in the spotlight.
Good to see a review on Raasay. I took a wonderful trip there a couple of years ago with a friend . It’s a beautiful island to visit and a beautiful distillery. Great views of Skye from the still room . Tasty whisky and one to watch for sure.
Raasay still has a bit of a ways to go in my experience. Not bad, just needs some more time.
Nice job again Gav....
Thanks for reviewing Gavin I've tried several Raasay expressions (not this one) and am not raving about it: they all had wine casks in the marriage and that just doesn't appeal to me. Slàinte mhath
I bought the inaugural rye cask (i think) and really didn't enjoy it at all. Considering i like rye whiskey and bourbon, i was disappointed. Hopefully its a grower whilst they get higher ages in their portfolio
Gav - love the Bunnahabhain whisky poster behind you. Where can I buy one from?
That's a tea towel bought at the distillery
Thanks for reviewing this one, Gav. The one you can't pronounce, chinquapin (oak, Quercus muehlenbergii, subset of American white oak), most people seem to pronounce as: chin-ka-pin. 95 pounds is a ridiculous price for a 5yo, so I don't blame you at all for passing on it. I know new distilleries have lots of start-up costs to cover but those should be spread across multiple years.
Many thanks
I vote for the 12 or Any of the Cadenheads
Cheers Gav, really enjoyed this pack and your feedback
