Holy cow. Dozens of searches over a 2yr period and I finally have a straight answer to the "what do they mean by tail?" question. I've been all over the tok, google and RUclips. Now, a video from 6yrs ago at the top of my feed.

If I don’t have a dehydrator will the laundry dryer work if I put my seeds in a pillow case?

Coulda saved yourself time by flipping the germinated seeds at the bottom with another pan but other than that good vid 💯

I truly love the video and it does seem easy... but it takes a lot of effort and time. Especially for say, 14 lbs of grain. So I wonder... how much of a premium do we pay for malted grain vs unmalted? I suppose I could google it and I will but if the answer is easy, let me know. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for getting right to the info. Too many of the other malting vids have a silly intro or a lot of junk that should have been cut before the uploads.

I did this and put my grain in a pillow slip tied up and in the tumble dryer. takes all the roots off nicely and makes them nice and dry

I used a zippered pillow case tumbled on low heat 45 minutes. Then winnowed the malt to sepporate the roots. Gave me a nice amber malt, for beer or moonshine

    Is dehydration important?

if you don't have a dehydrator, you can use your oven if it goes under 50 degrees c, any higher will destroy the malt. you could also lay it out flat under a large fan/in the sun and dry the malt traditionally, but it must be dried.

It doesnt have to be dried. Drying will impart flavor, but reduce enzimatic activity. The drier(darker color), the more flavor and coulor in the beer/syrup. The paler, the more enzimatic activity and higher sugar production, enabling higher alcohol content aswell. If the goal is to make whisky, non dried, paired with an apropriate yeast will increase your yield. It might lack in flavour though, but could do wonders in a blend.

No el So if you’re planning on distilling it, you do not have to dry it out?

If you do it at colder temperatures (not room temperature), you'll get higher enzyme activity :)
