    "... And if Quebec was its own country..." That's a bit of a touchy subject. They held a referendum about it in 1995 & voted to remain by a margin of just 50.58% to 49.42%.

    Quebec should be bigger. Labrador was stolen by the UK (1927) and given to Newfoundland because of a few douzen fishermen fishing there. Did they need to give away such a large portion of that territory? How would you feel if Florida was given away to Cuba by a foreign government?

    I love to point out to Americans (and Texans) that Texas claims it is big... and it's barely in the Top 10 regions. Quebec, Ontario, Alaska, BC, Northwest and Nunavut are all bigger; and Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are practically the same size. :)

    It can take 24 hours or drive thru Ontario. Every Canadian should make the drive across Canada once. It becomes clear very quick how it’s possible for us to have such different opinions. Outside of the southern Ontario/Quebec corridor we are basically a series of City states connected by a highway.

    You have to drive across the provinces to realize how wild and empty Canada is. Once you're outside the Windsor-Quebec City corridor, you can drive hours of wilderness to reach other pockets of population.

    The prairie provinces are not mostly grasslands. Most of them are covered by Boreal forest and are part of the Canadian Shield. The amount of grassland increases from east to west.

      Yea I misspoke the southern and western parts are more prarie grassland, the northern and eastern are the boreal forest.

    I guess technically Fort McMurray, AB is not a city. It was until it amalgamated with a large chunk of northeastern Alberta to form the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in 1995. Because of that it wouldn't be part of this list. If it was a city, would it be in this top 10 list?

      I don’t think it would because, it’s obviously a hub for the oil industry and thus it’s pretty well connected especially through air travel, a number of flights to fort Mac daily from Edmonton and other cities.

    As a Canadian, it's crazy to me how small and close everything is in Europe, and how peopled it is. I've driven for hours through the Shield and seen only a couple of cars.

      Yea, I road tripped through Central Europe a few years ago and honestly I didn’t go 15-20 minutes without seeing a small town or village, there were rarely any empty stretches throughout the whole drive, even through the rugged alps.

      Those trees are actually part of several different eco zones including boreal shield and taiga shield, the dominant eco zone in the prairies are the “prairie” and the “boreal plains” eco zones. This information is easily accessible on stats Canadas website.

    Just an FYI - - the Prairie provinces [Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba] do have the majority of the grasslands of Canada, but they are only covered @ 30% by the grasslands- the north of all three provinces is heavily treed [and has thousands of lakes as well……..]

    I love "Game Theorying" this kind of stuff out. Like if we built Devon Island with the density of Manhattan, you could fit billions of people!! The massive urbanization would help keep it warm too, making it perfectly livable!! People think you are crazy or that it is science fiction, but it is totally doable!

    Having driven from Southern Ontario to Alberta and back this summer I have a pretty good concept of how large it really is. It’s a longer drive from Hamilton Ontario to the western border of Ontario than it is to drive from the western border of Ontario to Calgary.

      I live in northern Ontario. Every time I drive to a Dr's appointment, grocery store or to a friend's house, I get a good reminder how big Ontario is. Lots and lots of driving to get anywhere.

    and what percentage of the landmass is built up area ? the answer will put to rest the hysteria around overpopulation, and also climate change. Because most of the land is empty and the climate changes only slightly and not because of human activity

      Yukon is approximately half a percent built up areas, and another half percent human activity for example farms or mine tailings. 99% is Virgin Wilderness.

      Very little, because it's not farm-able land. Population pressure is much more complex than just average density. People congregate where they can find jobs.

    They want to limit our ability, to travel. So if you don't go along with their idea, you'll be accused of being...."over housed". You won't be able to flee to safety, as they're already taking our cars, through draconian, environmental regulations. Once we're contained, we'll be much easier to control. After all, you really don't know, what's best for you.
