Practice vlog: Lessons that make me want to quit piano
I apologise for the amount of aura I produced when playing the piano that I accidentally created an infinity barrier and distorted the mic 🤞
I'll make sure this doesn't happen next time.
Exactly four days before my final graduation recital exam, I decided to take a risky trip and fly from Melbourne to Brisbane for a chance to get a lesson from Maestro Kirill Gerstein, hoping to open new doors and opportunities for my Master's study.
This was particularly risky for me as I follow a very strict routine of practice and mental preparation before any big performances. With my first-ever public concert coming up as well, a three-day trip wasn't exactly ideal for my preparation. However, Maestro K...

Lesson 6: Learn ANY song faster on piano
Просмотров 924Месяц назад
Discovering your most efficient practice method might seem like finding a secret shortcut to learning new music. However, the truth is quite the opposite. Your goal isn't to find a quicker way to learn music; the fastest method is to practice without making any mistakes or allowing bad habits to get in the way. Therefore, the most efficient practice method involves practicing as slowly as neces...

Sorry about the late upload. I know that a lot of people have been waiting for another lesson video. Lesson 3 uses Für Elise as an example of how I would practice a new piece for the first time. A lesson is not a concert or a competition, it seems like you approach it as such. even during the lesson, as the professor tells you something you nod and agree, no conversation nor discussion about anything. It feels like an athlete getting coached, even the "feelings" you have after the lessons are, in my opinion, very harming for you. how can an hour and a half time spent together with a fantastic pianist and teacher end up with mixed feelings or even pain? aren't you an artist first before all? shouldn't a lesson be a meeting between artist with sometimes different opinions? please don't take this as criticism, I was the same until a few years ago.

    Yes, it is practically impossible to do only piano full time, if you're not an absolute genius. You have to teach, compose, arrange, or sth else beside playing concerts. If you're not a piano star in the age of 18, then you'll probably never be in the future. It's sad but true. Being good is not good enough, basically. You have to be different than anybody else.

    Their have definitly been times where I cried after lessons and felt like I'm wasting my time practicing. It doesn't help having an 87 year russian teacher who barely speaks english. I think being a musician and having piano be at the forfront of your life leads you to believe that any critisim of your ability or musical ideas is a personal attack because of how close you hold music to your identity. This can lead to you either letting go of the grasp that music holds to your identity and enjoying your life with out persuing music or understanding that critisim from teachers doesn't point to a lack of skill but a level up in ability making your instrument a more fluid and easy use of expression for yourself and your own happiness, therefor persuing music. Im 16 so I still don't know what the fuck I want to do in my life lol. I just hope I can do somtthing important and note-worthy , in piano(Probably not) or something else. An average life is just not a life worth living.

    • @seankimmmmmm
      @seankimmmmmm 15 дней назад

      I am very familiar with this feeling, as it was my life throughout high school too. The difference is that when I was 16, I lacked the courage to express my feelings and didn’t really have anyone to talk about this with. Unfortunately, anxiety is an inherent part of working in the performing arts industry, and it often intensifies as you progress. I understand all the challenges that come with playing the piano up to the age of 16, and it's not easy. My advice is to use the discipline and commitment you've developed to pursue your current/future goal. Be resilient even if your path leads you away from music. Who's to say that another pursuit won't be just as challenging or even more difficult as playing the piano?

I was lucky enough to see him perform Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations live in the front row with a great view of his hands many year ago - it was sheer perfection. it’s so awesome that you managed to get a lesson from him. Frankly I don't think I would have done what you did, and I would certainly have done worse than you did. There are many professional pianists who are great people, but it doesn't mean they will have good chemistry with you, and taking lessons with them could be quite destructive, despite their best intentions. I'm glad it turned out positively for you in the end. Keep up the good work!

    Sean, listen to me: I know you kind-a-blame YOURSELF for the way things went. But, honestly HE AND NO-ONE-ELSE is to blame. I mean, HOW can you summon a person to be present at a certain time for his DRIVER LICENCE...ORAL EXAM...BALLET EXAM.....or in your case a PIANO EXAM and then push the time back with AN HOUR!! What kind of PEDAGOG even considers doing something like that. I don't know it this following example will help you: the captain of the DUTCH football team Virgil VAN DIJK(also captain of Liverpool) said that the LONGEST WALK he made, was when he had to walk from the middle circle to the goal in the PENALTY SERIES against the later champion ARGENTINA in order to get to the FINAL in QATAR. He said that it took him HOURS to get to the PENALTY STIP. And so.....of course he swept you from your feet when he told you that he would LATE AN HOUR. Again: do NOT blame yourself secretly, for there's just NO REASON to do so. And honestly....YOU didn't play that bad either. Ah.........you know what: F**********CK HIM...........HE'S SOOOOO FULL OF IT!!! I'll include a hearing in the House of Representative with the former head of the FBI. I want you to imagine that YOU are doing the questioning and HIM sitting there instead of miss Cheatle. And I want YOU to respond to HIS response to YOUR line of questioning. Again: it is NOT miss Cheatly who is sitting there: IT'S THAT BASTARD OF A PEDAGOG!! ENJOY: ruclips.net/video/SqJ1XcWF2M0/видео.html

    • @seankimmmmmm
      @seankimmmmmm 19 дней назад

      It's hard for me to cover everything since you actually asked 3 different questions 😭 but in general, no one plays a piece perfectly. Not even professionals. So don't beat yourself up for making one wrong note out of 3 million notes in a piece. You can secure your fingers by practicing very hard and slow (but make sure that you don't end up playing too hard or too slow in performance). Lastly, never expect to play well the first time you perform a piece in public. Public performance is a skill that needs to be practiced on its own (which means performing in public more frequently). I hope this helps.

    My piano teacher explained the same thing to me, that practicing the wrong thing at first will cause problems later on and will be much harder to fix than if you practice it correctly the first time (practice makes permanent, not perfect). So for those out there that think it's too tedious to get each note correctly, it helps a ton to write it down if you aren't that good at sight reading as he said. One tip for memorization that's worth mentioning here, is that it's a skill that can be trained. Practice memorizing something for 30 minutes a day, and eventually your memory will become much more confident, you'll be able to memorize more and more, in less and less time. I don't know how to explain it but memorizing a measure or page before i play it feels like cheating because i'm able to put both hands together after just playing through it once or twice lol
