We are doing OK and I wish I had more time for videos and stuff! Joplin is now nine years old and is still guiding with me and we have been through a lot. She is my whole world, and really the most nerve-racking and sort of grief thing I’m worried about is retirement, etc. I hope you fully embrace your journey and, you get out of it what you put in. Joplin has been a steady and calm companion, and there are no words to express the relationship. Best wishes and let me know how it goes!

The best advice I can give is to fully embrace the experience and don’t try to do other work or anything during that time. You have to get up really early so unless you’re naturally a 5 AM riser it’s a bit of a rough gig. Be open to getting to know your dog and things not being perfect right away. Also, don’t try to use any remaining vision to help the dog or steal yourself off course. Try to go “as blind as possible if that makes sense. That way you can start trusting the dog and eventually it will feel like you are flying.

I would have to get used to waking up early, but I can’t wait to feel that harnessed in my hand and yes, you do make sense when you say go as blind as you can because I have remaining vision, but I do not depend on my vision at all, I’m so excited. Just because most blind or vision people are used to listening to automated voices all day. To navigate my phone and Internet and computer, so I listen to it a little faster than normal speech. What’s interesting? Is that most blind people listen to it very very fast And I can’t process audio that quickly. I hope to do another one of these and I will try to slow my screen reader down and hopefully be able to provide transcripts. Thanks for comment!

Glad you enjoyed! Some of these conversations, even though they’re older, can still apply. It’s important for us to have support from multiple individuals. Losing your vision is like nothing else.

Two good places to look are independent living aids website. Or MAXI aids website. Some of them come in different colors and some of them can be very loud, sound double check the reviews sometimes. Hope this is helpful! Great to hear from you

Yes, I should definitely contrast that with some of the stories I’ve had with Joplin. As you can imagine it mostly involves people paying too much attention to her and not enough attention to what I’m saying. Thanks for your patience during quarantine, I hope to have more videos soon :-)

That makes total sense. But they would be so focused on her they ignored you. I mean it doesn’t make sense but it’s whatever expect from speaking with other service dog handler. Can’t wait to hear another story time video from you and hope you’re staying safe

I am so sorry if I didn’t reply to this comment earlier! I think we put a link in the description, but I can also let you know that the puzzles are from the company “outward hound “and in the puzzle shown, some of the pieces come out and some of them slide. Sometimes she will rip the tops off of the slide pieces but they snap back into place. I recently got a more difficult puzzle and that does not have elements that come off of it it is just moving and sliding pieces around, and spinning certain things to get to the holes in the bottom
