Ewhurst Green - H2 'Brighton' Atlantics
With the Bluebell Railway having placed its splendid replica of H2 Atlantic 'Beachy Head' into service, the opportunity was taken to have an 'Atlantic' operating session with three of the four featured locomotives coming to visit.
Of the H2 Atlantic names, St Alban’s head has a Coastguard Station (the lighthouse is at Anvil Point). whilst South Foreland, North Foreland, Needles, Beachy Head and Trevose Head all have lighthouses; the Needles also has a Coastguard Station..
_Of the H1 Atlantic names, Selsey Bill, Portland Bill, Hartland Point, St Catherine’s Point all have lighthouses. However, Peveril Point only has a Coastguard Station as (like St Alban's Head) the lighthouse is at Anvil Po...

  • @harstan7333
    @harstan7333 23 дня назад

    A fine-looking layout, but I would suggest that it needs some careful 'weathering' - especially on those roadways! The trackwork looks very good, but, although it may be an illusion, I query whether the conductor rails are a little too far away from the adjacent running rail and sit a little too high.

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen 22 дня назад

      Thank you for your observations on the layout (which is still under construction with subtle weathering present). The conductor rails are correctly positioned from the track centreline which in OO means there is a slightly wider spacing from the 'narrow' 16.5mm gauge running rails. This spacing ensures the conductor rail does not foul axleboxes (etc) whilst remaining appropriately positioned for shoegear.

      Thank you for your interest; decades ago I knew nearby Ewhurst Green well. The explanation behind the model is covered within www.ewhurstgreen.com/ and has its basis within unfulfilled c.1884 plans to build a railway from Dorking past Cranleigh and down to Midhurst. Had these plans been fulfilled then with a direct route to London the area could have been much different than it is today.

    Are these units worm and pinion drive........ Two motors with worm and pinion drives will fight each other if their speeds do not match!

    • @ewhurstgreen

      Thank you for your interest. 👍 They are worm and pinion drives and they do fight each other. 😟 It took time to establish that the (presumed) identical motors for essentially the same model actually differed significantly between production batches which lead to this problem. 🤔

      @@Danthehorse Dan, there is so much that could be modelled in Dorset (let alone Devon) - my first layout (cough) decades ago was set in West Dorset. 👍 Dorchester Town would be interesting or perhaps Weymouth with part of the line down to the Quay... Did consider the Lyme Regis branch (upon which I've travelled) albeit the Axminster end with main line trains and Saturday train splitting. Exmouth Junction has much potential (unless space is available for Exeter Central)...... However, the real challenge could be Maiden Newton with its gravity-shunt (instead of a run-round) for Bridport trains.😎

      @ewhurstgreen well, I love your suggestions, though it will be a fantasy set up, something simple with an RAF airfield maybe. I dont have much room. Just an oval with a nice backdrop and some scenics. I am inspired a lot by Neville Grove video , the Battle of Britain tribute. The Bulleids really fire me up, its just deciding what to get that would be in keeping. The Channel Packet is very nice but never comes up used and I balk at £200 plus new lol. We used to holiday in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall , I'm along the coast near Chichester. Btw, Colin was my late Dad's name 👍🙏

      @@Danthehorse Dan, perhaps you might want to consider modelling the Derry to Belfast main line which crossed the runway at (former) RAF Ballykelly? 🙂 The runway was extended across the railway during WWII, with airmen being routinely dropped off by train directly into the base! Nice part of the coast and not far from Tangmere either! 🙂 Have you thought about the Hayling Island branch? 🤔 _The bay platform at Havant could be interesting and some of the coaches used were made by Hornby - for example Bulleid 'multidoor' - set 978 was used on the Hayling Island branch between 1959 and 1962 albeit as a 2-Cor set often sandwiched between two loose Mk1 non-corridor seconds; the other BSK (from set 978) being employed as a Loose coach._ _Still carrying their set number BCK 6697 (Pull-Push set 618) and BCK 6699 (set 619) was used on the Hayling Island in the latter half of 1963 as a brake coach with non-corridor Mk1 Seconds 46284 & 46291 (these non-corridor coaches were produced by Replica)._ PS - Pleased to learn your Grandparents had good taste in names! 😅

      Yes I agree! But I’m curious as to why there are barrier trucks separating the engine and the brake van from the tank wagons. Is there a specific reason as to why that is?

    • @ewhurstgreen
      @ewhurstgreen Месяц назад

      @@BFP5025 Thank you for your interest. 👍 The use of barrier wagons is complex but essentiallywere mandated to protect the locomotive /guards van on oil /chemical /explosive trains (etc) in case of fire or explosion. There were also requirements for the seperation of loads. _This requirement was later amended for diesel locomotives where it was assumed that (in certain cases) the body of the locomotive created sufficient barrier._
