Ski helicoil installation and binding mount - a step by step guide on heli-coils
This video demonstrates how to install a helicoil in a pair of skis prior to mounting the ski bindings. Certain ski cores don't grab the screw teeth as well and screws may spin once the bindings are installed. This problem can be solved by inserting helicoil (heli-coil) in the skis. Helicoils are rock solid and will ensure the ski bindings are mounted as securely as possible on the skis.
Plastic inserts are often used for skis geared towards average and above average skilled skiers. Plastic inserts are east to install and very forgiving if a mistake is made during insertion.
Metal inserts, known as helicoils are often used in high performance skis and ski racers who put an enormous amount...

After the skiing and snowboarding season comes to an end, it is time to put away our skis and snowboards away. It will be a few months until snow flurries land on the ski runs at the mountain and until it does our skis and snowboards are tucked away in a garage, closet or even a storage unit. Out of sight, out of mind mentality does not fair well for skis and snowboards. These are high tech pie...

    Could you please tell me which glue you are using? Is the glue type very important or I can use ordinary wood glue? Thanks for the video

      Hi, I’m not the video creator ….but I’ve mounted many,many skis. Just a good wood glue is all you need. I use Gorilla brand. Have never pulled a screw out prematurely. .

    After cleaning the debris left from drilling we always place the jig back over the holes to insure the tap is lined up straight. When you free make those first few turns free style it is possible you could slightly angle the tap.

      you also risk putting the jig back on at a slighty different location and causing distortion too... maybe we should try to clear the debris with the jig on???

    Should always loosen your bindings before waxing. You can see at 2:35 he has hotspots in the wax where the screws are still in the inserts

      100% agreed. We always encourage folks to loosen bindings when not snowboarding. Even if it'll be just a few days between shredding.

    Been having some issues mounting the marker bindings this year ie squire/griffon. No matter what I do I still end up with a very minute but barely visible light under the base plate. Any ideas on hetting it flush. Ive tried a lot of different techniques already.

    • @stickdocs1128
      @stickdocs1128 2 года назад

      Seeing light under the binding plates is not uncommon, what we would suggest is to check the area where the screws go in, you don't want to see light shining through where screws go in. If you see light under the plates (especially by the ends of the plate), that's okay as long as the screws are all the way in solid (make sure not to over torque the screws and cause them to start spinning). Having said all that, last step is to get it release function tested. If it passes the test then you're solid because the calibration machine outs an enormous amount of pressure on the bindings and if they were not mounted correctly, they would rip right off the skis.

    Thoughts on a full toe peice heli coiled? meaning all 4 screws of my toe piece being heli coiled?

    • @stickdocs1128
      @stickdocs1128 3 года назад

      It's an okay idea. In fact we install bindings with heli-coils on all screws for serious racers that put enormous amounts of G-force on their bindings and do not want them to pop out under any circumstances. One difference here in this video is the use of plastic inserts. The plastic inserts are usually used for average skiers and light weight skiers. They are also easier to shave off to fit and accommodate for the thickness of the skis they are going into.

    • @Zeachh
      @Zeachh 3 года назад

      @@stickdocs1128 so would you used plastic or metal helicoils for someone who beats on their skis and is definitely on the more aggressive side?

    • @stickdocs1128
      @stickdocs1128 3 года назад

      @@Zeachh Depends on your skis and how thick they are. Beefier skis would need the metal helicoils. If you aren't a ski racer,yet very aggressive all mountain skier, you can use the plastic inserts and they will perform just fine. They will also give you better flexibility to take them out with more ease later on. Be sure not to use any glue when using plastic inserts or they can actually cause the plastic insert to spin inside the skis.

    • @Zeachh
      @Zeachh 3 года назад

      @@stickdocs1128 So they have a wood core so I think ill use the plastic helicoils, you wouldn't suggest using epoxy for the helicoils?

    • @stickdocs1128
      @stickdocs1128 3 года назад

      @@Zeachh No. Much like a drywall anchor when using a plastic insert, it should open up and anchor against the core of the skis when the screws are inserted. Epoxy and glue are used in metal helicoils.
