Wind and leg and electric powered boats
Noosa Gaffer Regatta 8th- 6- 2024
Here's a straight export from the 360 degree cam. Video is Timelape making us appearing to be traveling faster than 2 knots. The 3 meter selfie stick wobbles a bit in the wakes. Video ends when the cam's battery runs out.

Here's the same 360 footage "reframed" after reading the instructions. There's lots of potential with 360 cams. Jumpiness at the start is me extending the 3 meter selfie stick.
Tempo gets a electric motor - Zoomed (cropped) video
Просмотров 6122 года назад
First in-water test of Aquamot "Trends 2.2 FM" 2.2kw Fixed Pod motor with folding prop. Tempo is 18.5" and weighs 500kgs. Motor is silent, prop is audible at higher throttle settings. Batteries are Basen LiFeP04 302Ah cells. 8 cells in series. First measurements suggest 9 hours at 4kts. I'm happy.
Tempo gets an electric motor (Zoomed video is better)

First test of a just installed Aquamot - Trends 2.2 Fixed Pod 24v motor with folding prop. Batteries are made from 8, 300ah, 3.2v LiFeP04 cells. Motor is dead silent till about 1/3 throttle when a little vibration is discernable. At wide open throttle, the folding prop and motor are detectable. I'm delighted. Max battery draw in video is 1.8kw.
1906 Sharpie "Tempo" 1.5hr sail, fwd gimbaled video

We leave the beach, do a few tacks at Bribie Island and return. Nothing exciting happens, just a pleasant sail in 10-15kts. This video is a nice way to kill an hour & a half with mindless viewing, guaranteed not to over stimulate.
1906 Sharpie "Tempo" 1 hr. sail sped up 4X

The 1 hour sail sped up 4 times reducing watch time to 17 minutes. Interesting things become apparent when watching on fast forward. It's kinda hypnotic. Too bad youtube slaughters the video quality.
1906 Hooper Island Sharpie "Tempo", 1 hour sail at Spinnaker Point, aft gimbaled video

Someone asked for longer videos. This should do it. We raise the sail and go for out for an hour. Nothing noteworthy happens but it's better than watching a train or a sleeping cat for an hour.
Spinnaker Sound Dec 8,9th

Tempo revisited Pumicestone Passage, the sound formed by Bribie Island in Queensland Aus. We made this with a GoPro7 Black and a "Hohem iSteady Pro 3. Small boat enthusiast will enjoy viewing at full screen with volume up. Cheers, Mack
1906 Hooper Island Sharpie "Tempo", beats into 18 kts

Someone asked for a longer video so here is an unedited 25 minute segment straight from the GoPro. We leave the dock and tack into 16 -18 kts, ideal weather for a heavy Crab Skiff / Sharpie. I built "Tempo" in 2005, she is the "18-foot Modified Sharpie Skiff, Hooper Island, Chesapeake Bay, 1906" sharpie from Reuel Parker's "The Sharpie Book".

Xmas Day Sail 2018 Lake Samsonvale
Просмотров 6025 лет назад
We took Tempo, a Crab Skiff Sharpie built from Reuel Parker's The Sharpie Book, to Lake Samsonvale QLD Aus for a xmas day sail. Winds were light so we had a relaxing sail. Music: Nikola Vujicic, Rosantique - "Take Me For A Ride". Used w/o permission

I would have never considered launching and retrieving a 740Kgs trailer with the mighty Camry wagon but that new finagled electronic power management pulled Tempo out of the water on mud and wet grass without a slip of a wheel.

Xmas sail, Golden Beach 2017

Xmas Day 2017 we went sailing at Golden Beach, Sunshine Coast Queensland Aus. The afternoon sea breeze picked up a little more than expected as the gybe shows. We almost had to reef. The GPS recorded a top speed of 8.6 mph or or 7.5 knots.

Love your sharpie. I built a 16’ sharpie and have the itch to build a bigger one. Love your videos. Cheers.
Fabulous views! Are you happy with the new rig?
I am, she now sails with authority in light airs.
Wow, great indeed! And "Tempo" with bowsprit, staysail and bigger sprit main! Fantastic!
Moving right along! Good angles on the video.
Wow, what a great view the 360 cam provides. Excellent work !
Wow
I noticed we Subscribed a while ago 😊
Magnificent day 😊
Cool boat 😊
Awesome guys what a day 😊 thats our boat in the background 😅 🥰
We use your boat to see which way the current is flowing as we leave Spinnaker Marina. 😀
❤❤❤❤ your sharpie. Just perfect.!! Length, cockpit space, a bit of deck. Nice bow sprit (not really a proper one; but nice and hefty!). Simple all white and clean lines. 🎉
thank you Chris
I come back from time to time just to see how stable this boat is under sail! Amazing! Those chesapeake oystermen knew what they were doing, great execution of design,Mac!😉👌
Thanks, yes, and they always copied the best boat. Tempo is the result of years of trial and error by those fishermen/boatbuilders
A lovely bow!
She sails beautifully!
Thank you! Next videos will show Tempo with her new Spritsail rig with jib. Rig in this vid is Leg-o-Mutton.
I would love to get the plans for this boat.
hi Brad, contact me "mack at mackhorton dot com
Beautiful, I want to build one! Could it be build in solid wood, Its hard to find good plywood where I live...
Up until recently they were all built from solid timber : ) Get "The Sharpie Book" by Reuel Parker. I built Tempo from that book. Many other sharpies are covered. "The Sharpie Book" is a must read for those interested in Sharpies.
@@tilroh Yes I have that book. Just need to learn about this building method. Here in Norway its many clinker buildt boats. Maybe clinker sides would be nice...
@@Fredstli clinker would be very pretty. Build a small kayak to learn the tricks of epoxy.
@@tilroh I have buildt an Argie15 with epoxy. Now I want to try traditional solid wood 🙂
@@Fredstli I think the ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort - dot- com sells traditional sharpie plans. People on forum.woodenboat -dot- com will know more options.
that is one lovely yacht
Hi Mack, what type of electric motor have you fitted and could you please share more details? I looked on your website but couldn’t see an update yet. Thanks Pete
Hi Nispete, The motor is a Aquamot Trend 2.2kw Fixed Pod. It came with wiring harness, controller etc. and a fixed 3 bade plastic prop and a Eliche Radice 2 blade folding 11 x 6 prop. It's quiet and powerful. I'm happy.
Lovely!
Sweet!
OK. SO where's the groovy dance music? You know that "'swing"' music you had in your other vids? That was great!
I didn't know anybody beside me liked that music, thanks!
Hi everyone. I wonder how would you have reefed this kind of sail. "Leg o mutton" or "sprit boomed" sails are no easy to reef.
you can have reef points the same as any other kind of sail. Traditionally, Leg o mutton sails reefed vertically. i.pinimg.com/originals/45/19/be/4519bea4cab1380311be5175e550c489.gif Cannot easily be done underway.
Hi, inlike a lot of things about your boat.... is there any website you have seen plans for this boat or similar please? Did you build it or does someone make these? Thank you.
thank you. I built the boat from "The Sharpie Book" by Reuel B. Parker. This boat is from page 108 and there are many similar boats in this book. The book has building instructions and is invaluable.
What design and length is this sharpie? Absolutely Beautiful
Thank you!. She's 18'. I built Tempo from Reuel Parker's "The Sharpie Book". I highly recommend this book.
That is quite impressive!
Lovely boat...nice pics...thanks
Have been trying to choose between Parker’s Ohio sharpie and several other designs. Your videos are very helpful!
Really nice sailing action. I'd also like to see footage of the same trip from off the boat so you could see it's profile & movement
Thanks, drone video would be cool
Real nice addition to an already lovely boat. I got one the other day, just a 12 volt 34 lb for my canoe, using a 400ah lithium. These lithium batteries are awesome, 5 kilos and last hours
wow! Pretty strong motor... pushes it very good!
very well.....
Nice! Good soundtrack
Do you think a design like this would work with a fully glassed in floor above the waterline, slight pitch, to make it self bailing? With storage via sealable hatches? Any downside to that? Thank you. Just want to add more safety and ease of maintenance…
I've thought of similar but for water ballast. Ended up deciding that it would raise the sole/floor too high. It would lower stability to a degree and loose a lot of space. The boat would be harder to right if capsized. I don't think this is the right kinda boat for a raised floor.
Seriously impressive ability. With the mirage drives
Those Hobie drives are incredibly efficient devices.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that's a proper, solid boat!
watermelon mannnn
Good video! Good idea! My boat now is making! Haha, we are the ones who work hard on RUclips! I subscribed to your channel!,

Do you have any dealer in US?
Hi, no dealers. These were one offs. I have a set of plans for Ripple if you're interested.
I just can't believe how responsive that boat is on such a small 'rag'. But after almost ten years I think it's time for a new 'table cloth' !
I swear to god you guys changed the music. You used to have Swing as the theme...LOL
Nice. Outer Banks for sure.
I like this video
Whatta goer !
Very nice! I have a few questions, what are the dimensions? Length, beam and hight? How much water does she draw centerboard up and down. And is the centerboard weighted with lead or is this Sharpie unballasted?
Thanks David. Length is 18', Beam 5.6', mast is 20', draws 15" board up, @4' down. Centreboard is weighted just enough to make it sink. There's no ballast. Tempo was built from Reuel Parker's "The Sharpie Book". An excellent book for all kinds of common sense solutions.
@@tilroh awesome, thank you, it is a beautifully simple boat, I am thinking about built me a small sharpie and will check out that book.
@@hinahanta You're welcome David. Regardless of what boat you build, "The Sharpie Book" would be a benefit.
@@tilroh Hi, Please can you tell me if she was inspired by the "18-foot modified Sharpie Skiff (Chesapeake)" or the "19-foot Small Ohio Sharpie" ?
What's pulling you along?
Ha ha, thanks!
It must be extremely satisfying to go zipping along so nicely in vessel that you built yourself!!!
Thanks for taking us along, always great videos!!!
Thanks for the explanation of camera mount. Well done.
