Drywall Taping (10" box - Covering Flats and Butt Joint)
I wish I could like this video a second time, it really puts into perspective he amount of work involved in stairwells
Fantastic content as always sir! Do you ever run your butts with the 10" box run? 2 on either side? Thanks!
Also at this stage if you're a box guy taker the time to run the 5" knife along all the box edges wall and ceiling same time as 2nd coat on 3 ways.
My bro we are taping the same houses my setup is almost the exact same as yours right down to the headphones except I use one of those small telescoping 13' ladders with the 8-13' plank. Tape and topcoat everything except angles, then the next day run angles with scaffold still setup and skimout everything else, at least it saves 1 setup.
Also why not run the boxes over the waist level joints? Do you usually handcoat all the stairwells? I'm a hawk and trowel guy but I can still run a pan and knife and love watching other people do it.
Bro every video of yours im learning at least 1 new thing. Brb gonna go put 2 used tape rolls on the top of my ladder so I don't scuff the walls with the rubber end. It's so clever! Also for the viewers the plank hes on is called a telescoping plank, 8'-13' ones have served me well I think he has the longer one though.
Great video as usual. The only thing I'd like to add is I usually do a 50/50 taping mud+durobond mix it gives it like 3 hours of working time so I can mix a pretty full bucket and still use it all before it gets setup. I've never noticed the shrinkage to be too bad and not having to go back to the mixer every 70 minutes or so is really nice to cut out the down time on prefill day (usually about 5-6 hours for a difficult townhouse or 3-4 for a regular one.
Hey bro great video! I'm a drywall taper 2nd year taking it seriously and I just starting to do townhouses solo. If you dont mind me asking what sander is that? Did you add the light yourself? I like the idea of a backpack vacuum, I do have the festool planex and vacuum but I find it too cumbersome for townhouses with multiple floors (3) and have opted instead to use my dewalt powersander with 5 amp batteries, with 2 on cycle on a fast charge station. Also I was surprised when you mentioned 80 grit even for rough sanding! I usually use a few 150s (1 per floor) for rough sand then save them for final sand because they're more like 180 by then. I definitely want to try a 5 pack or something of 80 just to see how it is. Great content thanks! Gonna check out your other videos
Probably gets a lot of blisters doing it this way but idk I’ve never thought about trying this method and too messy for me to want to
One roll in on buket is not too much? I mean ,it's not too heavy or ? Unusuable?
Then just use half bucket. I mean I stopped using one roll per bucket. Just get more bucket
I see you have completely destroyed the floors like all you drywallers do! It's pretty pathetic that you are one of the trades that takes ZERO effort to keep your messes to a minimum, and you cause others huge amounts of work cleaning/fixing everything you destroy with your negligence.
That look dangerous.... i really beleive this isnt the proper way to do this
Building houses is dangerous work. That is the right way and the only way to get to that area.

Use a banjo, its so much better
You think a banjo is too heavy?
I ve forget to say that I'm really not use to tape with supertaper. That's why I'm asking. I tested only once🤔. Have you heard about quantity you can get if we're use to it?
I tape 450 metre of tape a day with banjo in France, houses are not the same as yours😂( a lot of work) I have a super taper but I never use it. I think it's much less stress on the shoulder with supertaper. But I'm not sure that I can tape as much with supertaper ? May be more ? What do you think. Thank you for your great videos!
Hey friend thanks for checking out the video, great question. For me, it would have to be the super taper. It made for volume, its durable and it light. I know it’s messy and it can seem unreliable, but it’s the best for anything above one roll of tape. One roll of tape and one mud on a banjo is heavy. Banjo is for the DIY guy, or repair guy.. drop the banjo and save your shoulder 👍🏾
And yes I do notice that taping is always a bit different in other parts of the world. 🤔 I wonder if I’d be a good taper in France.😂
Thank you for the precision of description. Great job.❤
Thanks for checking out the video, I appreciate your time. 👍🏾
Thanks you for sharing. Do you clean your glove between taping and knife or flushing?
Hey thanks for watching, thanks for the comment. I do wash my glove after handling the tape. I always carry about half a bucket of water when I tape. The mud from the tape tends to make my tools messy and slippery. Also taking off the gloves is a chore.
I will try supertaper next week. I'let you know how it goes. But i'm sure i won't be tired as usual with the banjo.
I've been washing my hands with a bucket and stponge between using tools and applying tape and now I'm realising I may have been doing this all wrong... (Also liberally moisturizing in the evening after)
On a stairway like that, I use to run an extension ladder on the side like you have, a temporary wood brace screwed into the drywall where your other ladder is, and a extendable plank like you have. After I sand, I'd remove the 2x4 and spot it in with quick set 5 min twice and sand it real quick.
That’s another way to do it. That’s how I started back in the days. But I’m a taper and there is always an easier way, so I remove the extendable leg from the ladder and place the paper from an old role of tape on the top open ends of the extension so I can protect the wall. In this case when I’m done there is no extra work.
@@augustinhogreen3117 yeah, those stairways suck because they turn at the bottom. If I could fit a drywall bench in there with extension legs on some stairs, I'd do that to on the closer wall. We use to hang and tape so it wasn't a big deal, sometimes we'd go ahead and finish those hard to reach areas while hanging the house so just the easy stuff was left on taping day. Then again, I use to do retarded stuff like stilts on a 12" plank over an open stair way.... fall and your legs are no more if you are lucky to live. To be young and stupid again, I guess!
Solid work brother stay blessed man .
Much appreciated 👍🏾
Do not previl tapered joints that do not have a gap of over 1/4" or else you risk your tape sitting higher than the surface. You should only prefill gaps and holes that are over 1/4" so I don't think this is good advice.
Yeah, those joints are tapered for a reason... Why fill them in? I'm so confused...
The prefill gives a sheer bond to the two sheets. Even if it’s a small gap like 1/16, it’s worth doing.
Do you also pre-fill where the walls meet and where the ceiling meets the walls?
@@Ryan-xw4qx The point of prefil is to not have a void behind the tape. If the gap is easily filled while regular taping, there's no reason to prefill. If you have a 1/4" or more gap between the joints or corners between the wall and ceiling then yes, you should prefill those gaps flush with the drywall before taping. Make sure no mud sits on top of the drywall or else you'll get a high spot. You are basically using hot mud to fill in missing drywall.
I need to politely disagree with this. We are not prefilling the entire bevel, only the small seam where the 2 factory joints meet. The entire bevel is like 2.5" or something into the drywall. To each their own, but here in Southern Ontario where temps can go from -35 to +35 wood will shift and on residential especially prefilling everything is necessary to avoid warranty work 3 seasons after install.
Bon courage mon ami on fait le même travail mais dans un pays différents 🎉❤
Why are you putting water in the mud box? So you can get more mud out of the bag. You have more mud on your clothes than your savings cleaning bags. Looks like all purpose you mixed up last, it’s so thin are you applying it with a paint roller?
Great comment, I don’t wear a lot of the mud. Makes people think I’m working hard. 😭😭. The bags can be use if you clean them properly. Mainly for the taping process. Check that video out. 👍🏾❤️
When the mud is all over my cloth, people assume I’m working hard. But I’m hardly working. I’m a taper, I refuse to work hard. ❤️
The last bucket is gonna be a 12” box skim coat. Skim coats are always thin. Gotta save that mud. ;)
@@augustinhogreen3117 when l ran jobs, the tapers that showed up to work and didn’t want to work hard got fired the same day they showed up
good👍!
Thanks! 😃
I was a finisher for 50+ years…. Don’t use this system it sucks
This system may suck, but it’s light convenient and durable. Banjos are heavy with a full roll of tape. Bazoka’s just look expensive and heavy.
Don’t use nails….screws!
Nail heads are just terminology, like 45’s, inside corner and flats. Nails aren’t used very often these days. Just some old school drywallers. 😎
Looks like 8’ drywall?? Fire your hangers and find someone that can hang 12’. Happy homeowners aren’t going to use auto tools.
He’s leaving to much mud in recess, if the sheets are tight don’t prefill. Prefill butts and large gaps after properly prepped
Hey Freind thanks for checking out the videos, sounds like you’re a fan of my channel. Like share and subscribe. I have more videos coming up soon so you can post comments on those also. But just to let you know, watching videos on RUclips don’t make anyone an expert, you need practical experience.
If you are a homeowner Don’t do this….paper tape stretches when it sets wet to long . This guy would be off using a banjo, most pros use a Bazooka.
Thx you
No problem
Great video, can you please forward the link to this Sander you're using? Thanks in advance and regards from DR!

The sander I use has the vacuum integrated. I recommend that type.
A good trowel mechanic would use his trowel to feather the edges not a knife
I agree that the trowel has advantages, it’s just that not everyone uses the knife. And I also think that the knifes has its advantages. Knifes and skimming blades have a place in taping I think. 👍🏾😁❤️.
💯💯💯💯💯
Is that hot mud or joint compound and do you mix water into your joint compound or just mix and go?
I don’t use hot mud, I don’t know what it is. I use CGC all purpose mud (red label) that comes in the box. For skim coat I dump the box in a bucket and about 3 cups of water and mix to a creamy finish. Most time I cover the bucket to keep the mud from drying out and preserve that creamy texture.
The amount of water used can differ depending on how comfortable you are with soft mud. But softer mud is better for skim coat.
Do you coat over wet tape the same day after embedding tape
The short answer is yes. Pre-fill properly and let it start to dry(set) Wet tape properly and let it start to dry(set) Then you can go ahead and cover the same day. There will be a little shrinkage, but that can be sanded out once the material is completely dry. The key is to do the prefill and the wet tape properly.
Beautifully done and presented!
Thank you kindly!
Do you use the 325 or the 450?
The 325 is good for angle that are tight and clean. And the 450 is better for larger gaps and longer angles .
Bon courage pour votre chantier !🎉🎉
These guy don’t make it easy for me . 😎 I just have to play it cool.

The feathery touch speaks. It says you've been doing this for quite a while. Thanks for a video on the skim coat. 👍
Any time!
Great video. What band and type of flusher are you using?
Can Am is the brand ( columbia is also a good brand ) 3" is the size and i recommended you get the type with the wheels 👍🏾
If u doing a repair on a painted surface. Do u need to sand the painted wall prior to putting drywall mud on it? Thanks!!! :)
if its a surface repair such as a dinged wall or a deep scratch, there is no need. you will have to sand the final job before paint. Something like a sanding block should do (150-189 grit)
Excellent job on that butt joint!
thanks 👍🏾
