This year I looked at your gun making video 's I have been shooting black powder a long time Started with a TC kit then got an Ozark Mountain rifle Hawken kit . Green river barrel . .Green river and Douglas barrel were the thing to get then . This year .found a 45 cal. Douglas 44 inch barrel and bought it. I had watch your video a wile back . So I went back and fallowed what you did . The lay out and all .Thank you so much All most done with my first Kentucky rifle .It has been a lot of fun making it . I think that you save me from making a lot of mistakes Thank you for those Video's Tom .
Fantastic job on that cabin. Hope you and your new wife get a lot of use out of it.
Thank you very much! So far we are. I’ve always wanted to build one. Finally got to.
Yoooo immediately subscribed!
Thank you! Welcome!
did you buy the stock or did you just buy a big bunch of wood and carved the basic curvature of the musket, because i cant find any stores or sites that sell a big piece of wood like that and i also wont find one that sells wooden stoccks to carve them out. What did you use?
I do both. But when I cut a blank it’s out of walnut. I ordered that maple stock from Dunlap woods out of Virginia. Also check out Pecatonica longrifles and rivervalleygunstocks.com
Thank you so much for sharing that primary source with us! It's always fascinating to demystify mechanical failures and learn how much you can do to ensure consistent performance in your equipment.
Yes it is! You’re very welcome! And thank you for watching!
So glad to see you're posting again! I loved your videos and was sad to run out of them. Have you ever considered doing something with InRangeTV? Karl has a huge love of history and blackpowder firearms, and you are clearly a master in your craft. I'm down in Arkansas, but maybe I'll make it up there on my bike someday!
Thank you very much! I would love to do something with InRangeTV. Yes! If you’re ever up by Sedalia, MO be sure to come to Arrow Rock. I’m there every Thursday-Saturday as of right now.
Will Arrow Rock allow you to film some of your work as you build every part of a flintlock? I hope they will -- it would be good, free (to them) advertising. Thumbs up!
Yes. We are planning to do a video similar to Wallace Guslers video that was filmed in Williamsburg, VA in the 60’s. I hope to go a little more in detail about things though. You just can’t cram a whole rifle build in in an hour and understand everything. So hopefully we’ll get that done.
If the springs are weak, I just reharden them. A propane torch should work it works for me. But you must know what you are doing to achieve success. Maybe do a video to enlighten those that do not yet know.
I sure will when I go to making springs or like you said, fixing a weak spring. You’re absolutely right sir, if it’s not broke, it can be reheated and fixed properly.
"Remarks on Rifle Guns" by Ezekiel Baker, 1823. Is this the book you are reading from? If so I'll have to add this one to my collection! Thanks for the new content!!
Amazon has ""Remarks on Rifle Guns" by Ezekiel Baker, 1823" for $32 U.S. + S&H, but I have to assume that you found it before making your comment. Thank you for giving the book info that you did!
Yes. It says on the book, “Bakers remarks on the rifle”. It’s an excellent book.
@bobvines00 that’s it. It says “Bakers remarks on the rifle” on the book. It’s an excellent read.
Congratulations on getting married and welcome to missouri.Glad to have you
Thank you very much.
Great video!!! Enjoyed hearing all the little tidbits on a flinter. Congrats on getting married....take care Robin
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
Man I must say it is a blessing seeing you again. Hoping to many moments more with this channel! I must ask, how did you get your drill bit for creating the ramrod hole during the rifle build? Thank you very much.
I actually bought a 3/8” bit and a piece of 3/8” steel rod and took them to a machine shop and had them drilled and tapped and threaded together. Works great!
@ thank you!
I'm looking for some information on a blank K Wells &,co. Madison percussion lock. Can't read letter before K. Help would be appreciated! Thanks
Hey Jeffrey. I apologize, but I know nothing on that lock or the name. I’ll try to do some research for ya and see what I can find. My email is goldenmeanflintlocks@gmail.com if you’d like to send me some pictures of it.
I like your style. Great cabin background. Do more videos if you can. Thanks.
Thank you Stephen. I’ll try to get more out here soon. Thank you for watching!
@ you got what it takes to have a great channel. Keep it primitive with a well used look , and original documentations…..you will have success. So many muzzleloading RUclipsrs look too clean, slick , and polished . You have the correct look about you. Not fake and made up right out of a Jas Townsend Catalog look..
Boy am I glad you're back! Congratulations on getting married, wishing all the best for you and your family!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. Glad to be back!
Hi Tyler is art bennett glad to see u back at it
Thank you sir! How’s the Fowler holding up?
glad your back i really enjoyed the videos on the rifle build
Good deal! I’m glad.
What a bonus, keep them coming! I recently finished forging my own lock and have had to change and move and adapt various parts to get it to work reliably. The tiny detail that may cause issues is quite incredible for such a basic mechanism. These last two videos are much appreciated.
That’s awesome! Do you have the books “Journal of Historical armsmaking technology”? I got mine off of eBay. There’s several volumes. But volume 1 goes into detail about all the fine details of filework to get the lock to function properly.
@ Thanks for the reply! I don’t have those books but I will search for them. I only very recently was introduced to the delights of the flintlock but am a man possessed! I have made my lock by screen shots off of you tube and the various sites on the internet.
@ those books have actual size parts in there so you can trace them and make the parts. Very handy. You can also buy a lock like from Jim Chambers and use it to copy all your handmade parts. Change a few little details to make it your own.
Hey Hey Hey! Welcome Back My Friend! I have been patiently awaiting your return. Checking in on you via instagram just wasn't the same. Congrats on getting married and I home you found your own little piece of heaven in MO. Can't wait to learn more from you. Building my fist rifle very soon as a wedding present for my daughter and soon to be soon and law. Still deciding what to build. I want to do a match set of fowlers but we are in Eastern OR and it is all Hawken all the time out here. I will dare to buck the system and expand what these folks out here are used to. Good to see your back. Thank You for what you do. I do have a life outside of RUclips videos but your vids are something different.
Thank you so much Jim! I hope my videos help you out on your journey. Fair warning though, once you build 1 or 2 it becomes addicting lol. If you need any help with something, let me know so I can do a video on it or something.
Great to see some content from you. I really enjoy watching you do your work.
Thank you very much! Glad to be back.
Good to see a new video.
Thank you! Glad to be back!
Great to have you putting content out again
Thank you Chuck!
Nice to see you back and sharing the knowledge. I’ll watch part two before I ask my question.
New Jim Chambers Christian springs rifle. Using 3/4x1 flints. Just seems like I only get 5-8 shots before the flint looses its ability to throw sparks. It’s hitting right where it should. I feel like I should be getting more shots from a single flint.
Sounds great!
@@diamondmetalworks13you should be getting more. I have better luck with the grey french flints. They seem to be harder. If the face is chipping off, you can take a knapping hammer and lightly tap the face of it to jar it up a little and it’ll spark for another 5-6 shots or so. I also use my knife by flipping the blade over and tapping on the face with the backside of the blade while the lock is on half cock. But I only do that in a pinch because it can put scratches on your blade. Hope that helps.
Thank you. I’ll give some French ones a try. Congrats on your hard work and livin the life you want.
@ thank you so much! And ya, give those a try and see what you think.
Wondered how you have been. Welcome back Tyler, look forward to your videos!!
Thank you!
Happy to see you back ! Congratulations on getting married; and it sounds as if your move to Missouri was a real plus. Wishing you all the best in your future projects, and looking forward to seeing more videos :- ]
Thank you Bob. I appreciate that! It was good. I’m still working on getting established up here. Built a cabin and my gunshop and now I’m about to start building our house. It’s been busy!
Welcome back. I just discovered your channel maybe a year ago. Your videos have helped me understand and fill in the gaps that books don't. I'm inletting my first swamped barrel now into my first build, a JP Beck inspired build.
That’s awesome! Good for you! I’m so glad my videos help you.
Great to see you back! Happy Thanksgiving!
Great video. I was wondering is your wife into history like you are.
Thank you. She enjoys it as well! She runs a wedding venue though which keeps her really busy on the weekends while I usually go to events when I can. It’s hard to find weekends that work for both of us to go to events together.
Schön dich zu sehen, mach weiter mit deinen Videos.👌🖐
Thank you! Will do!
👌
Golden Mean Flintlock, please make subtitles available for your foreign fans.👍🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I’ll see if I can figure out how to do that.
Dang boy, my day at the workbench just keeps getting better! Two Golden Mean videos in one day! Thanks Compadre. TC
I think I’m finally to where I can start making more again.
Ooo a follow up video I'm waiting to do my exams for college also nice house
Thank you!
Welcome back, where abouts are you in Missouri ? I have fresh moved to Frankford ,MO and will soon be setting up a new workshop for building muzzle loaders. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos . Very ambitious building your own cabin using primitive methods .......... good luck finishing it up.
Thank you very much! It was a ton of work lol. I live around Sedalia area. A little over 2 hours west of you.
Keep up the good work. Promoting history and a truly american art form. I applaud your drive and efforts. Good luck and God bless.
Thank you so much!

I was 3531.
I was delighted to see this video come up. All the best for your new adventure.
Thank you so much! Hopefully I can finally start getting more out now. A lot has happened in the last 2 years.
Absolutely fantastic to see you back on here Tyler! I've watched your build videos about a hundred times! I'm current building my first gun totally from a blank. I've built quite a few using precarved stocks with the barrel channel and ramrod hole already in. The one I'm build now is an iron mounted early Virginia rifle with me hand making everything except the lock and barrel. As soon as deer season is over I'll be back to the forge to make the trigger guard. A video by you on hand making wood screws would be great. Well, I guess I now have to plan a trip from NW Oklahoma to Arrow Rock! So glad to have you back. TC
Thank you so much! That is awesome! When you can all the parts yourself, the rifle means so much more to you when it’s completed. I’m working on one here soon where I’ll be forging everything except the lock and barrel. Once a year I build one completely from scratch at Arrow Rock. Lock, stock and barrel. Thank you for watching and I’ll be glad to see ya sometime if you swing by Arrow Rock!
Great to see your back. Congratulations on the gunsmith job.
Thank you very much!
glad to see you back man
Thank you! Glad to be back!
Good to see back. Your gun building series was an awesome tutorial. Best of luck on your new job.
I sure appreciate that! I’m really looking forward to the new job. It’s a dream come true! Thanks for watching!
Oh my he has returned welcome back mister your musket building video has been a great inspiration to me making my own thank you also nice to see you again
Thank you very much! Good to be back! I’m sure glad my videos have helped you!
Didn't see any videos on making a musket.
@ I don’t make muskets. I don’t like them lol.
You should see if you can organize a “woods walk”, I’m in KS and not too far from you. Keep up the good work!
That would be a lot of fun! I’d really enjoy that!
Nice work. Hope to see more soon!
Thank you!
I have loved watching this series, I have a bit of confusion though, the last episode had a steel butt plate? Did I miss something?
We lost the footage of the carving on the one I was building in the series. If you watch the shooting and explanation video, that’s the rifle that was built in the series.
Im a little late to the party, but where did you get the blank for the stock? Or where would you recommend i look for a blank?
That blank I ordered from Dunlap woods out of Virginia. Pecatonica longrifles is another good place to order blanks.
@goldenmeanflintlocks9713 thanks! Hopefully my first reenactment rifle will be one i make, though I can't expect it to be perfect
what lock you use
I use all kinds of different styles. On the lock on this rifle in the series it was a Davis flatface lock. I use a lot of Chambers locks too.
@@goldenmeanflintlocks9713 where do you usually purchase tools and materials for building flintlocks
where did you get the wood
@@emmamaslar3950 that particular stock was ordered from Dunlap woods. You can also get them from pecatonica longrifles and a few other places. That lock on this build was a Davis lock. Jim Chambers makes a great lock and also owns Siler now. Silers are wonderful locks as well.
Greetings from Asia! Your work is amazing! May I ask how you made the metal flintlock structure? Is there any blue print or is it possible to get it by 3d printed? I would love to get one from your shop but unfortunately it’s illegal to hold a flintlock in my country, so I can only try to build a demonstration model on my own… trying to rebuild myself a Charleville 1777
I order most all of mine because that’s about the only way people can afford them. I can hand forge them but it takes at least two people to do that and the barrel costs about $3,000 or more after it’s completed it’s all hand done. If you go to NMLRA website and go to their “pioneer videos” you can find a video of handforging a barrel and it does a good job explaining it. Hope that helps my friend.
@@goldenmeanflintlocks9713 Cheer mate! Very appreciate your response👍
Do you still make custom Rifles And If So how do I get in touch with you.?
I do. I’ve kinda slowed down on custom builds and am mostly building what I want to build and selling them as I go, but I still do custom builds here and there. What are you possibly interested in?
