I don't have a good place to put my keys, so it's time to make a completely over-engineered key hook.
This turned out to be a bit of a bigger challenge than I anticipated, so any suggestions for part 2 would be wonderful :)

What about the mechanism in which wire is coiled up and when a user would pull the cable, you would feel tension of it trying to be pulled or coiled back into its housing. but after you have pulled it out and leave it, it stays in that position. And to retract it, you just pull a little more and let it go.
nice, i have the same problem, but my desk geometry dont allow your solution
That's a shame!
Nice man I Made a dubbel one for me and it is perfect
The quietness of handtools is why I prefer to use them too, also you have more control.
Absolutely, it's much more peaceful!
its so useless xDDD just buy a 20$ bungee that will work better
Next up I discovered Bluetooth 😂 kidding. Nice solution. But why not use some washers behind the nuts?
idk why but this video was just so comforting and nice. love it
Thanks so much :)
Heres a hot take, but have you ever heard of wireless
Personally I would move to wireless. But the idea for handling slack wire is still amazing. I could see this type of thing being great on a larger scale in a shop for hoses and such too.
This is like the one issue that bugs me the most while at my desk!!! I have very little experience woodworking, but this seems simple enough. Will try over the weekend
I'd love to hear how it goes!
how much weight are those wings? like if the maths is right, it might not need to remove that much weight off it
I haven't got scales accurate enough to measure 😂 But I'm sure I'll be able to do something!
Making this 3d printable would be super easy and consistend
love how jank this this lol
Just found your channel and your videos just put a smile on my face.
I'm so happy to hear it! Glad you've been enjoying them :)
i actually never knew about manual drills before. i was exposed to only electric drills all my life since i was born so it didn't even cross my mind. they're fascinating ! i am learning so much form you and the comments too !
They're really quite fun to use as well, gives you an appreciation of how much effort it takes to drill a little hole too 😂 I've been learning heaps from the comments as well, it's been amazing seeing the community grow :) Thanks so much for the lovely comment!
Watching this was... Painfully satisfying?? If that makes sense. lol.
Add more weight in the hook/bottom of slide so the keys are enough to overcome the spring?
Maybe bend the spring of a ballpen
get this man a 3d printer ASAP
add weight to the keys
😂
What a patience! You must really love what you do. I love birds and this bird key hook would be something that could make me happy every time I see or use it. But no way I would build it myself. Fingers crossed that you make it work.
I find using my hands, especially for something like carving, very relaxing so I can happily spend a lot of time on it haha I hope I can get it to work too, there's been a lot of great suggestions, so I'm very hopeful :) Thanks for the lovely comment!
I think the answer is to use longer linkages , and make the holes closer to the middle of the wings. This should give you a smooth transition and you will no more need to use so much force to get the wings up
I like how you did a neat job even without proper tools. I just found out that with patiance you can do anything.
dude this is so sick :0 if you ever revisit this project i think a cool addition could be a headphone hook/holder that’s connected to the weight release system so when you put your headphones on it, the cable automatically gets retracted! keep it up man 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks so much! That's a really great suggestion! I'm thinking I'll make a third version and try to get it so I can lock/unlock the cable by tugging on it (kinda like blinds), a hanger sounds sick though!
@@Barnso ayoo that would be cool too! best of luck o7
How did you select the saw? Looks nice.
It's really nice, though you can definitely spend a LOT more than I did on it. I basically went for the cheapest of the mid-range saws haha. This one has cross cut teeth on one side and rip cut teeth on the other which is really handy, and something to look out for if you're getting a saw with just one set of teeth. Hope that's helpful, I'm very happy to answer any other questions you've got :)
bro just buy a coiled cable
Nice!
Thanks!
I have Bluetooth headphones.
Good idea. I made a couple - cereal box and copier paper, rounded the corners, and put a little tube on the spine to hold half a pencil. If I am still using it in a few months time I might even make a proper one!
Awesome! Hope you love it as much as I love mine!
My cats would murder this great solution!
😂
You could add some small weights to the wing tips instead of carving out more of the wood. Also, try waxing the slide with some parafin wax to reduce the friction.
Great suggestions, thanks!
i dont care about pefect finishes (although it is satisfiying on some level). I care about being inspired. and you sir inspired me.
I'm so glad to hear it! I can definitely improve on the finish front 😂
Owl? That sure as hell isn't an owl
3:35 😉
Wax any of the friction points, find a spring from a pen, those things are super lightweight springs. That’s the only simple fixes I can think of
Great suggestions, thank you!
4:00 maybe double stick tape can help you there?
That would definitely help 😂
1:06 Hehehe
Seems like a sort of pulley counter weight could work, a weight heavy enough to pull down and lift the wings when keys aren't hung. But not as heavy as the keys, so when you hang the keys they pull everything down. Not sure where you'd hide a pulley/weight like that though.
Maybe I could sneak it in at the back? Thanks for the suggestion!
I do know a trick from a hidden blade making community, about CA glueing the surface of the wood and sanding it down to reduce friction, tho I've never tried this before.
Oh that's a really interesting idea, thanks for sharing!
Barnso I suggest you a project for you to work on . try blacksmithing make a small knife .
I've always wanted to give blacksmithing a go, might be a bit tricky in an apartment though hahaha
@Barnso yeah I did not think about that 😅
Carving is fun but a lot easier with a denser wood. I also, spend a lot of time sharpening my tools, good standard is to be able to shave with them.
Every time I've done it I've really enjoyed it, it's very relaxing! I do need to get myself a proper sharpening set up, what do you use to keep your tools sharp?
@@Barnso I started with a lansky kit, primarilly for my knives on the road (doesn't work great for chisels). Had the great luck to inherit a tormek from my grandpa that I use at home. Getting a relativly basic diamond stone and angle guide will get you surprisingly far.
Awesome, thanks so much for the info!
I love your videos! They are so inspirational :)
Thank you so much!
Love the design and the making process! Mechanically it looks like a seeSaw would work - a weight and counterweight. The weight keeps the wings in the up position and then the keys operate as a counterweight and relieve the weight. (small strings and pulleys) Or - you lift the body to put the keys on a hook, or putting the keys on the hook lifts the weight of the body (more pulleys) - a bit like a corkscrew mechanism!
I think the seesaw is what I'll be aiming for, just using the weight and no springs or anything seems nice and elegant to me!
Could you connect the wings with a rubber band to offset some of the weight needed on the key side of things? Like an assisted pull-up, but.. in.. reverse? Assisted pull-down?
Something like that could definitely work!
RE: the CAM. No the cam is/was ok. The wheel beside it was too high. All you had to do was drill a hole for its axle so the top of the wheel would b in line with the top of the wood (below the cam) and all would be good.
Yeah haha I noticed that while I was editing (I think I left a note around 6:17 but it was a very quick one!)
Suggestion: wind excess wire on a spool, like for thread or cable. The spool is then connected to a low-force coil spring, like what’s in retractable badge reels. The reels may not have many “turns”, so perhaps you could have some sort of gear system to turn one revolution of the coil spring into several revolutions of the spool. This would keep a low tension on the cable, but perhaps enough to keep it self-winding.
That would be really great! My only concern is I think you'd need a slip-ring or something similar in the headphone cable to stop it getting twisted up, and one of my (unstated) goals with this is to get it to work for any cable without modifying it! If you can put a slip ring in the cable though I think this would be a great solution!
The easiest solution is to obviously add a 2 kilo weight to your keys.
On top of making the wings lighter, and the hook heavier... I'd consider using either barsoap, candle wax or graphite from a pencil to reduce the friction in the areas where wood rubs against wood.
Wait til this guy discovers wireless headphones.
feels like it's friction and the weight of the wood, maybe try sanding/ planing the wood to made it lighter and you can lubricate the mechanism a little with graphite (obv makes it black though so idk how that'll look on the final product)
I think all the mechanisms will be hidden by the carving, so hopefully it wouldn't be visible. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@Barnso I hope the suggestion ends up being helpful in the final product!~
