    I like your video. Thanks for posting. At 5:11 you suggest running a bead of caulk where there is that 1/8 inch overlap. There are a whole lot of people who would say not to do that. Their theory is that any water that gets behind the siding needs a place to get out. Some siding underlayment (my incorrect word) even has vertical grooves to help channel any unwanted water down to the ground and away from the back side of the siding.

    UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE!!! I got my boards back from the cabnetry shop, and OH BOY! They did a great job for me! They put the boards through their CNC machine and milled that Dutch lap profile and added tonge/grooves, such that I now have boards that have tonge and grooves and the final product looks like two boards the exact size. Now all I have to do is cut the top of the extra boards with the touge, to make the thrid piece and slide it under the groove thats on the bottom of the first board. They charged me $140, which I think was a steal considering having to purchase a router bit for $90-100 and do all of the work. Hey Bill, your technique inspired this update. Thank you again for posting your video.

    I bought the kit because I wanted to support Bill’s work and show appreciation for his knowledge of screech owls. The owl box assembly was very straight forward and didn’t take long. The pre-drilled holes took the guesswork out. I installed a ring pedestal camera on the access door, and it gives a clear view of the bedding. The kit is very clever, well thought out, and reflects his owl knowledge.

    In my area we have great horned owls, western screech owls, barn owls, and possibly spotted owls. The great horned is the only one that I have heard in our garden (I'm impressed with the great horned's ability to survive in urban areas like this). Any recommendations for an owl box or two?

    • @billgibson--tacticalyakn--outd
      @billgibson--tacticalyakn--outd 9 месяцев назад

      Absolutely the easiest and least expensive thing is to put up a screech owl box or two. Horned owls as rule don't use boxes. They are not cavity nesters but take over hawk nests and things of that sort. Spotted owl like barred owls can be hard to attract to a box and the box and installation can be quite expensive since the box is large and should go high in a tree-20ft+. If you are in a wooded area it is doubtful you have a barn owl unless there is a large field nearby

Replace pine shavings in. Do I need to clean out? Or stay away? @billgibson--tacticalyakn--outd Thanks for your answer! I'm in Central Texas, in the Hill Country. Sorry I forgot to add that. Our Winters are very close to the same as yours up in N.Texas. I suspect in a "normal" Winter the 2 inches would be perfect. However, if we keep getting those -6° Arctic Storms such as we have had the past 2 Winters, I just don't know... Or has it been 3 Winters now? I'm starting to loose track... I truly dislike those Arctic Storms.

      Hi Bill 👋 I looked for an email address on your YT page, but didn't see one. So I'm just going to write to you here. I've got a possible owl sighting question for you. I should warn you, I'm not too good at writing short descriptions! So grab a cup of coffee, this might end up like a short story! First, I'll tell you where I'm located. I'm in The Hill Country, just West of Austin. The area is heavily wooded with old growth Oak trees. My house backs up to a small park that has a creek. The creek creates a nice corridor down into Lake Travis, which is only about 1,200 feet from my house, as the crow flies. Or should I say, as the owl flies! It's normally very quiet & peaceful over here. So there I was, standing in the park in one of the rare places with open sky. The sun had already set behind the hills, and it was just starting to get dark. The trees were all black shadows, but the sky was still brightly lit. Suddenly, over by the creek, about 200 feet away, I heard a big commotion. It sounded as if somebody was breaking a lot of branches, or maybe a wild animal was caught in the brush and thrashing around in it? Whatever it was, it was LOUD and seemed intense! This is not a normal occurrence around here, so I started walking over to get a better view of that area. The sound of branches breaking was getting louder, but because it was getting dark, I couldn't see anything moving around by the creek. I just stood there listening as something continued to crash around breaking branches. All at once this big bird was jetting out of the low tree canopy, and racing right toward me!! Yikes!! I must admit, it did startle me a bit! I was not expecting a bird to be racing toward me!! My first reaction was to think it might dive bomb me! Altho, I'm not sure WHY it would do that! It's just that it was headed straight for me, and flying low too! I felt like maybe I should run for cover, but I knew I would never make it. It all happened so fast! I ended up just standing there, watching this wonderful sight. It WAS flying right toward me, but just as it got over my head, it veered to the left, following the open space I was standing in, and then it disappeared into another Oak treeline. I didn't hear anymore branches breaking. It was very clear THIS was the animal making that big ruckess as it swept through the trees! I was dumbfounded!! I've lived here 25 years and spend most of my time outside. I've never heard, or seen, anything like that before! It was flying fast, and it was flying low, and it was crashing into branches for quite a distance! Probably more than 300 feet of breaking branches as it went along. It must've been flying less than 10 feet over my head! (I'm 5'2") Because it was twilight, I couldn't see any colors to ID the bird. And because the sky was still light, I was gifted with having a perfect view of it's size and shape in a shadow form. What I saw was a perfect black silhouette of a bird against a light blue sky. The spread of it's wings was somewhere between 2 and 3 feet, and they stood straight out from the body. It's body looked like a perfect oval shape, pointed at both ends which reminded me of the old time airplanes from WWII. The girth of the oval was quite hefty too. This was not a skinny bird! The head was close to the body, there was no neck to speak of, nothing like the Turkey Vultures I've seen around here. Plus, it was smaller than the Vultures too. That night I scoured the internet trying to find out if any Owls have the habit of crashing through the trees breaking branches as they go. There was only one I could find, but they are located up North, and don't hang out in Texas. I've been watching all of your videos over and over. We've had a sighting of what is probably a Screech Owl in our yard. One of my neighbors who knows the calls of Screech Owls has told me he's heard them around here. We also had a hawk sighting a while back. What kind, I don't know. We built an owl house to your specs, and put it up in one of our big oaks. We're still waiting for an owl to find it. I'm pretty sure I've got Owl Fever!! And now, here I was, watching this great big bird, much bigger than a Screech Owl, fly directly over my head!! It was AWESOME!!! But the crashing through the trees, loudly breaking branches, has me stumped. (I'm no bird expert!) Unless maybe it was trying to scare up some dinner? I dunno... So my question to you Bill, is this: Do you have any ideas on what it was I saw? Do you think it might've been an owl? Or some other raptor in the area? Signed, Curious With Owl Fever, In The Hill Country

      Injustice gas but it could be one of two possible owls. Either a barred owl which are quite large and have about a 3 ft wingspan or it could have been a great horned owl which have a larger wingspan of about 4 ft. My initial guess is that it was a horned owl but both are quite aggressive and I have seen both crashed through underbrush

    You mentioned the boxes can be regional. What part of Texas are you in? I'm in Central Texas, in the Hill Country, West of Austin. I'm starting to notice owls hanging around, and I'd like to put a box up to keep them close by. We have had those horrible developers cutting down massive amounts of old growth oak trees around here. It's really hard to watch. And then there was what people are calling TreeMaggedon last February (2023) when thousands of tree limbs, and entire trees, broke from "the" ice storm. I'm betting that's what has brought the owls down to my neighborhood which has very large, old oaks, still thriving. Like I said, I really would like to keep the owls around! But I haven't been able to see them clear enough to ID the type. I only know they are on the small side, and I'm thinking they are brown. It's always so dark on the rare occasions I see them! And I don't want to be one of those humans who use the flash on my camera just so I can better see the owl! It's not a lot of info to go on! But probably Screech Owls? I'm just guessing. I don't have much experience with owls. I suppose the owl looking for a nesting site knows which box to choose that is best for them. I think that's so cool ! Now I'm wondering how many boxes can I put up in my small yard. It's only 100x100 feet. (But I have 7 very large, more than 200 year old oaks. Basically a shade covered lot with a house underneath the trees!) And I have 3 different places that are ideal for boxes. Except, 2 of those places might be too close together? The 2 trees are about 15 feet apart. But they both have a clear view of the Southern exposure. I don't know if the owls don't mind other owl neighbors so close by? Or perhaps they are territorial and would compete for space? Maybe I should only put up one box in my small space? I'll take a look at the Cornell site just in case you don't see this comment. But I'm asking you anyway, simply because I like to gather as much information as possible. And I did hear you speak of your experience, which I consider invaluable! Edit: Well, I should've waited to watch the entire video before asking my questions! You mentioned the Dallas/Ft.Worth metroplex, so I'll assume that's where you are. Good to know! I have family up there & I'm going to send them this video & push them to put up owl boxes too! They're gunna love me for THAT one! (Not) But they're used to it from me, I'm always pushing SOMETHING Nature related toward them! Thank You for all the great Owl Box info in this video! I've seen other videos, but yours has better information geared toward the species to which we should be building. And THAT'S what I've been looking for! It's very helpful to see a person with experience explaining these details who is in, or near, my region. Any tips on how I can better see the owls at night to get a better ID? I do not have a nature cam, wish I did tho...

      I am in the Dallas area but the common owls in your area are the same as ours. Eastern Screech owls are the most common and likely what you are seeing--they are small. The barn owls are medium sized and generally will be around fields and grassy areas. The Barred owls are quite large and make the who-who who cooks for you call. The great horned owl is massive and won't be mistaken for anything else in the area. There is a tiny population of western Screech owls down there. They are very rare in that area but their behaviors mirror the Eastern, So,, yea this box would work for you as well--and it is ventilated for the hotter temps as well. Thanks--great question !

    Is it possible to order a Screech owl box from you? I have a tall skinny box I get owls in every year. But after hearing your story, I'd like to replace it with a wider one with an offset hole.
