The Bookrunner Part 2 - Kinetic Rush Art Challenge Breakdown
Behind-the-scenes breakdown of my entry in the Kinetic Rush Art Challenge by Clinton Jones (pwnisher). As with my last cyberpunk render, I listened to a lot of "immersive" music during this competition, which ended up not being great for my overall mood. I also ran out of time to fully implement everything I wanted to include, but I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

    38:25 iirc, there is a very short direct path from the console to the door, but it was destroyed and blocked off by the corruption. Also, the big fans would normally be safer than that. I think stasis is supposed to be a near 100% freeze for an extended period of time, as you can see when Mercer uses his own stasis module. But of course, it had to be nerfed for gameplay purposes.

    The food area venting to the exterior might make sense if we assume its to allow the restocking of food easier. Like when the ship is at a port instead of taking the food through the Hanger & over to the Food area they can just bring it directly into the storage area for easier transport.

    If stasis doesn’t make sense think of it this way: if your working on a huge ship like the miners or engineers with a bunch of fast moving dangerous equipment your going to want to slow that down a bit and get around. plus by this time period it’s possible that they could have made a temporary time slowing invention

    question: for an engine like this how would you get it to operational speeds. I'm assuming a separate source like compressed gasses, but I would like to here about other ways to get things going.

    • @RocketScienceGallery
      @RocketScienceGallery 17 дней назад

      Correct: usually you would use compressed gases to start flowing the propellants into the engine, but this doesn't have to be from a separate gas tank. You can also bleed off some of the supply of each propellant into another line that is heated by the nozzle and/or combustion chamber, and feed it back into the supply tank at higher pressure; but for this you also need to get the engine running first. In some cases you can use the initial pressure from the tank to start the pumps, and in some (newer?) cases I believe you can also run the turbopumps electrically to get them started. It's also technically possible to use something like a piston or syringe to pressurize the gas, but if anything this is only really for special cases of small engines.

    Loving these reviews. If you ever feel like a quick one to do (in terms of it not havig a long difficult campaign to explore) have you considered Space Engineers? The title alone makes the reason evident. As a primarily sandbox game you can just stick on creative mode to quickly experiment and explore the options and basic functions of the setting. And it has published scenarios (some free, some dlc) and npc ships/stations if you want to focus more on exploring how they present the universe lore.

    As a network engineer, this style of review is very enjoyable. Just one thing, when it comes to the safety discussion, it is important to remember that this ship is a literal planet cracker. It´s purpose, in this dystopian bleak future, is to destroy a planet and harvest it´s resources. Ishimura is the longest running planet cracker in the galaxy and Concordance Extraction Corporation could not care less about people´s lifes. So while we can definitely point out potential security flaws and breaches, this ship is not really built with workers well being in mind.

    @30:40 I think the lice ad is a subtle reference to Alien3 where Ripley has her head shaved due to the colony she ends up on having 'problems with lice'. Notably said colony is much lower tech than even a decommissioned Sevastopol. Might be nothing but if I had to come up with an explanation for why there's a PSA advertisement about preventing lice, it's the out-of-universe Alien3 reference. Given nobody on the Nostromo had a shaved head though, doesn't seem that the problem is ubiquitous.

    Absolutely adore this kind of content! As a hobbyist storywriter I find it so interesting seeing people who know their stuff break down a lot of things that I'd take for granted or not think twice about. I always want to give all aspects of a story respect and try to make things make sense, but it's impossible for me to research everything and get it all right so videos like these really help me understand the world and sci-fi stuff especially a lot better. I do find it funny how a lot of safety complaints you express very much fit the narrative of humanity evolving into this shitass capitalist nightmare and CEC being just an extension of humanity's greed. It's always debatable on how much was intentional and what were genuine oversights, but I am impressed at the level of detail they were able to get right. A lot of storytellers rely on suspension of disbelief just to make things feel less bogged down and focus on the story itself, but I adore stories that make the world feel real (even if they have to establish their own ruleset for the universe.) But seriously, none of the game's events would have happened if the CEC didn't decide to break the law and work in a banned area to begin with. I also recall that the Ishimura was going to be decommissioned soon and only held out as long as it did because it was sort of an icon and that reputation kept CEC in good graces and it stayed profitable. Logically I feel like the decommission order HAD to be because it ended up a bigger safety hazard than was feasible for the company to get away with anymore. Also, I don't know how huge of an undertaking it would be, but I would love to see a video talking about Mass Effect! A lot of it revolves around this mystery tech inherited from a previous civilization that nobody can seem to properly replicate and I'd be really interested to see what you'd have to say about all of it. It's one of my all-time favourite franchises (sci-fi or otherwise) and to me it feels realistic in a lot of ways, but I am not an expert on any sort of technology so I wouldn't know. There's different tech from different alien species too, such as the Quantum Entanglement Communications (QEC) in ME2 that's explained in-game as a means of instantaneous communicating between long distances. Don't know if quantum mechanics are your expertise but they certainly aren't mine. I don't know if Mass Effect would appeal to an engineer that much, but I've always found it fun how the aesthetics and functions of various tech and architechture seem to differ based on the species that built it, and how in shared spaces they end up blending together a lot more. Some stuff is explained in detail while some is left pretty vague. Basically there's a lot of things in ME that I'd love to see an expert pick apart! Downside is that it's a trilogy, there are a lot of inconsistencies across the games and there's a very massive environment to study with this video's level of detail. Regardless, I'm definitely gonna subscribe and I look forward to more from you!

    • @RocketScienceGallery
      @RocketScienceGallery Месяц назад

      Thank you very much, it means a lot to hear that these projects are enjoyable to other people too! While I regrettably haven't played Mass Effect yet, and it would probably take a long time to review, from your details it sounds like it would be a very interesting study, even if it were just to focus on some of the bigger picture elements. My goal is to eventually get this process refined enough so that these reviews don't take several months each to make, especially for very detailed games like Prey or games with sequels. So it might be awhile but I'll definitely keep Mass Effect in mind for a future video!

    • @ceediculous1842

      @@RocketScienceGallery Of course! I hope more people find your videos, they're really fascinating! Yeah, it's a lot of game to just play through and it definitely has its flaws but if you do get to it I hope you have fun with it, even if you don't make a video out of it! The first game goes into a lot of detail about The Normandy (our space ship) and if I recall correctly, the giant space station/hub Citadel's artificial gravity is generated by centrifugal force as an example - but as stated, I really can't tell how much of it is grounded in realism. I just know it sounds cool. I look forward to any of these videos (Prey is definitely a very fun one I'd love to see) and wish you luck with them! I hope you have as much fun making them as I do watching :)

    Actually the Article IV thing is also interesting from a legal perspective, as you can really stretch the definition of a weapon of mass destruction. Tungsten rods wouldn't be considered nuclear, but whether they could be considered weapons of mass destruction is absolutely debatable depending on potential payload yield. For example, you say that they have a potential payload yield less than that of the atomic bombs, which could be considered less than a weapon of mass destruction at a nation scale in addition to them being considered either a conventional weapon, or non-conventional non-nuclear weapon. Now the largest conventional weapon the US has, is the MOAB, which is something like 0.01kt. So the lower limit of what a weapon of mass destruction needs to be debated. Since the little boy is 15kt, which absolutely is a WMD. Now I don't know a whole lot about space law, but I know a decent amount of criminal law, and the fun thing about criminal law, is that what is considered a weapon of mass destruction is considerably in orders of magnitude less than what the international military definition is. At least in the US (*civilian law*) a weapon of mass destruction is something in the realm of a payload equaling several pounds. Washington DC criminal code § 22-3154 defines a weapon of mass destruction simply as a weapon manufactured to kill or cause serious bodily harm to several people. Which in it's definition is extremely broad. So for space weapons, yeah it's up to whoever can argue a tungsten rod isn't a weapon of mass destruction. Considering that I don't think there is any case law at all regarding this, some enterprising attorney could craft the first case law to this and run hog wild lmao. The implications of such would definitely set in stone a lot of things, but there's also a reason nobody has done this. Multiple nations never want to define something like this, just in case they'd like to pursue it at a later date. It's kinda why the US avoids a bunch of treaties that several other nations have signed. Anyway, thought I'd add my 2 cents to your videos, I discovered you recently thanks to the youtube algorithm, and love your stuff. Your cover of the Ishimura was outstanding, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Actually after posting this I found the US military code for a WMD, congress has a writeup on is and it's 50 U.S. Code § 2902, which doesn't define a yield size, just a composition (e.g. chemical weapon/nuclear weapon/biological weapon/infectious agent). It has no payload yield definition. So, rods from god absolutely is not a WMD according to US law. Meaning, something like this is legal lmao. At least in the US.

Engineers focus on fixing and maintaining all sorts of tech and machines in this universe...but just imagine you are an engineer...tasked to fix the Earth's NUMBER 1 MINING SHIP, THAT ACCOUNTS FOR AT LEAST 6 DEATHS AND NUMEROUS MINING RELATED INJURIES PER MISSION.
