Oboe reed making - PART 4 - Making reed with profiler
Hello again :-)
Welcome to video no. 4 on reed making using an oboe profiler.
I use the Rns oboe profiler for 2 - 3 years and I can say that it is really a big help for oboists.
I use three templates MT, MAU and LORY .
Each template must be played with a different embouchure :-)
The reed is ready to play in about 3 to 5 minutes.
Of course, you have to play on it for a few days and then the reed is ready to go on stage :-)
Enjoy watching :-)
The cane is Moliniere (2009) 10,3 - 10,5 mm, 56-58/100mm, Hardness 10-14

Oboe reed making - PART 3 - Hand scraping reed

Welcome to the third part of reedmaking - hand scraping reed :-) Here You can find my way of scraping. I don't use a dial indicator for scraping, I just try the reed and try to keep the scrape area symetrical. But if You want, You can of course use it. Enjoy watching :-) Audio : 1. Oboe reed making - PART 2 - Shaping and tying

Hi again, welcome to the second part of my reed making. In this section I would like to show you a shaping and tying an oboe reed, which is very important part of reedmaking and perhaps more important than the final scraping. If you do this incorrectly, you will never have a good reed :-) Enjoy watching

I tried to make this video useable for all level of reedmakers, so You find here making reeds with, but also without all machine for reedmaking which I now use. Off course, some of them You must have 🙂 In this first part You can see tube cane selection, splitting, g...

    Yes, I echo the sentiments on the visible technical detail that you demonstrate in the reed profiling process and also the additional refinements made to ‘fine tune’ the whittling process. However, the PLAYING: I have to say, I am enamoured by your playing. I’ve listened to many fine oboists and there are so many more to listen to but I have to say that I enjoy your playing. It resonates with what I practice to aspire too in terms of control, tone and articulation. Please state whether there are videos of you playing on line and if not WHY not!! I, for one, would love to hear more of your expression on the oboe and I’m sure, in all humility, that there would be others that would second this request. Please!!

    This was really informative thanks. I'm considering buying one of these machines and was trying to decide which templates to go for. Im thinking of getting a Lory for the lovely rich and mellow sound, and the MAU for the brighter and more flexible sound for solo/concerto work. :-)

      After profiling I just play on it, and if its hard, I put it back on the machine. Maybe little bit adjustment of tip, if its too thick. And check the sides if are the same thickness.

    Great video, thank you. I have the Lory template too, but my reeds never work like that straight from the machine, even when the tip is scraped .10mm - I have to scrape so much more to get any vibrations. Any idea why?

    • @peterkovacs1397
      @peterkovacs1397 4 года назад

      Thanks 😉 I dont know exactly why it is 🤔 There can be more aspects why is it for example , the blunt blade, I had similar problem, but after resharpening the blade, it works fine 😉 Maybe to hard cane, if I have a realy hard cane, which is so hard in flexibility test already, the reed after profiling is hard to play, I let it dry, then again a little bit playing on it, and after that, I put it on the machine again, with same setting and ussualy came some cane of from it and is better then 😉 Other thing, You should try to not tight clamping it, so more cane is remove from back. The Lory has a little bit thicker back, so maybe it help 🙂

    • @matthewjones9158
      @matthewjones9158 4 года назад

      The cane could be hard, but not less than 10 on the hardness tester. I think the blade could be a bit old - I will try my spare! I really liked your videos - so good to see tips for Euro style reeds. There’s so much about American reeds but much less for us!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I use Lavoro and Rigotti also and they has nice sound too. I use thickness between 56-58/100mm For me is less so soft and more than 58,59 is hard, If You use harder cane.
