Cape Cod Canal Voyage: Sailing Surprises and Radio Firsts
We sail from Gloucester to Mattapoisett and navigate the Cape Cod Canal for the first time. This journey was filled with unexpected encounters, including a close call with a floating deer and hailing a big ship heading into Boston over the radio for the first time. We experienced the thrill of big swells leaving Scituate and had a run in with a lobster pot during the night.

Done that trip 4 times... Love the guys at Gloucester and at Scituate. Love going through the canal. I was born in Cape Cod. I'm in Morehead City heading for Bahamas soon. Enjoy your videos. Brave souls you two to do it in the cold.
very interesting! I kept thinking that Dinghy was going to get swamped! Wondering if you guys could give small explanations for the sailing terms you're using for us landlocked folks! If not, I dont mind pausing and using google!
Another fun video. ⚓️⛵️
Mattapoisett is my home port. A little sleepy this time of year.
Good job 👍 enjoy being young and I really enjoyed following along. That crab trap would have drove me nuts banging all night long 😮See you next week ❤
Darn lobster pot, sorry you didn’t get to sleep!
Your videos sustain me during a long New Brunswick winter. May can't come soon enough to get back on the water!
Wow!!! Thanks for sharing, this video covers so many familiar sights. 🥰Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more safe travels 🤙🏽
Always a good idea to bring your dinghy on deck. It can easily swamp or flip in stronger wind and/or steep sea state. Not a problem anyone needs. Cheers
Agreed. If Seth and Jordan like their dinghy, bring it on deck. Used to sell several dinghies per summer to sailboats that had lost theirs on Nantucket Sound. The tow attachment points are easily torn off, especially if the dinghy gets enough water splashed in. Also, in rough seas it will be very difficult/impossible to retrieve the dinghy even if it's absence is noticed early. A 12v inflator pump can quickly re-inflate the dinghy if it is necessary to deflate it for deck stowage. Also surprising how much drag one of those has. Might cost them as much as 1 to 1-1/2 knts speed. Doesn't sound like much, but if your forward speed is 4-1/2 knots the difference is 20% faster. Over the course of a day that might mean arriving an hour or two earlier, or more (bonus, the dinghy arrives too!). If a dinghy flips it tends to submarine. An instant sea anchor, possibly in the worst conditions for such to occur. The bridle, or tow line has a strong chance of snapping. Then, one is trying to retrieve an upside down dinghy, in big waves, and trying hard not to get a line in the mothership's prop. I know it's a PITA to bring it on deck. But dinghies are pricey, and very useful when you reach your destination.😬
Enjoying your videos. We sailed our 33ft boat along the same route this past Oct from Salem, MA to Warwick, RI. With winds from the North/North East the run from Scituate to the mouth of the canal can get extremely rough. When conditions spark up like that, I have always found our dinghy tows much more smoothly when you let out a lot more line so it is towing about 2 waves behind your boat which could be up to 30ft of line or more depending on conditions. Safe travels!
Awesome job guy! Building confidence every step of the way!
Been binge watching your channel! Keep it up!
Thank you 🙏🏻!!
Done that trip twice. Can’t do it this winter. Great to follow along. We also met Tantalus in Newfoundland!
It is not the wind that is the danger, but the waves it kicks off. Of course, the waves get worse as the time and distance (fetch) which it blows through.
it's nice to follow along on your adventure / travels....
Just found the channel and love it! Have had lots of fun out in the Bay of Fundy! Be safe and keep the videos going! Love to see some videos on you electronics, solar and such!
how far behind are the videos?
Two months
Love the intro guys! 😂 I obviously know nothing about sailing but i feel like you guys are becoming more confident in your abilities and enjoying yourselves more. Really glad your meeting some cool people along the way.
Thanks Ang 🥰
I'm so glad I found you at the beginning of your journey! You guys are great! Keep the videos coming. Liked and subbed :)
crazy i randomly found this, am located in boston and am hunkered down in my warm room.
The two of you are fantastic! Great video

Another fantastic video. Thanks for sharing this with us. As I mentioned in an earlier video comment, I really appreciate seeing you wear PFDs all the time. So many people brush those off on a sailboat. I don't make guests who are snacking on cheese and crackers in the cockpit in light conditions wear PFDs, but any guest who wants to help do the "work" of sailing needs to wear a PFD. Quick question (and I ask this as someone with not much more experience than you): do you adjust your jib cars at all? I know that they are important to adjust depending on the point of sail, but I leave them in the middle. It seems to me that any lost efficiency (I'm not racing) is traded off by not having to leave the cockpit to adjust them. Maybe if we are offshore on one point of sail and expecting the same winds for a couple of hours... Do you adjust you jib cars much? What about your backstay? I tension mine in the spring and don't think about it for the whole season. You know what though? People like us are getting it 80%+ right the whole time. Will we win races? Nope. Will we have fun? Yes we will. I share your videos with people I know who think sailing might be in their future. It was a dream of mine since I was in my teens, and like you, I finally did it. I'm a lot older, so you guys have a longer time to explore. But the reality is that if sailing is a dream, then do it. I own a boat with my best friend (our wives have no interest in sailing). (I'll be 59 and the co-owner will be 60 this year.) We've gone from a Paceship PY23 to a Tanzer 26 to a C&C 38 Landfall. Jordan, like you, we get a bit... worried sometime too. Seth and Jordan, thanks!
Hey Mike!! To be honest we are wearing our life jackets less and less. Most times we leave the cockpit we will put them on but sometimes we don't, we're getting more comfortable. We just learned about the sail cars this week actually and have yet to put it into practice. From my understanding if you pull the car aft it will luff the top of the jib and tighten the bottom, and moving the car forward will tighten the top of the jib. We've noticed a lot of the time the top of our jib flapping so we need to move our car forward. (Top and bottom being leech and foot)
A flock of cormorants is called a "gulp". Cormorants are water birds that migrate in flocks, often in V-shaped formations or long lines. _Search Labs | AI Overview I must admit to never seeing that many cormorants (in the air or on the water) before. _me
It's the most we've ever seen! Thanks for the facts 👍🏻
I'm enjoying your videos, lots of fun. I hope you can come back to Maine sometime when the weather is warm. A bit of advice from an old TV producer - hold the camera steady and motionless for shots from the boat. Don't swing it side to side, or, if you do, make long, slow, steady pans. Viewers might get seasick otherwise.
Thanks! We had someone else comment a similar suggestion on our last video 😅 unfortunately we took these videos a couple months ago. We're playing catch up now and will probably have more shakey footage in the next ones until we're caught up 🥴

This is my fave video so far. Love the creativity, positive energy and footage. Well done and happy sailing ⛵️
Thanks Swan 😘
A pit in your stomach and shit in you drawers. Ahoy matey!
Good job!
You are starting to feel the boat and tap into the sailing community.
:)
Ha ha ha you guys are a hoot! Subscribed! I’m doing it next fall from New-Brunswick! Fair winds and be safe! Cheers!
…solo!
Nice one! You'll have a great time 😄
Hey guys hope all is well, and I hope you're somewhere far south by now....or at least in the Chesapeake Bay. We came down late, but you're way late...stay warm ❤.
We are, this video was taken back in November, we're trying to play catch up :) Thank you!
Looking forward to seeing your stop in Sandwich MA - Cape Cod Canal east entrance. - Tom
Believe it or not there is yet another fort (Fort Foster) right under the sunset on Garish Island in your closing shot. During WW II there was a net strung across the entire harbor entrance to keep submarines out of the Piscaataqua River where the Portsmouth Naval Base is located.
oh wow, we had something similar to that back on in Halifax!
Yeah I made the mistake last summer of taking a mooring ball in Portsmouth instead of Kittery the current was brutal so good for you. Just a small suggestion guys try not to move the camera so much I get motion sickness just watching the constant moving background suspect I may not be the only one haha. Stay safe I dream of doing that migration too in a few years so watching you guys and a few other snow birds go through the process....
We walked to Portsmouth from Kittery and saw so much current passing under the bridge. Thanks for the suggestion, we've noticed that too and have talked about getting some kind of gimbaling mount for the camera. It's really hard to keep it still haha
@@sethandjordan yeah the Piscataqua river is the second fastest navigable river in the US !. The launch service comes with a boat with 2 HUGE outboards and their mooring balls are like triple the normal size. The water rushing through the hull at night was so loud we thought we were on a canoe navigating rapids or something mind you our boat is 42ft :0. Wish I had done a bit better research but glad you guys enjoyed the calmer side :)
Great video, subscribed 😀
Thank you 🙏🏻
:)
I'm really enjoying watching your journey. One thing I really appreciate is seeing you wearing your PFDs while on the water. That's a strict rule for me. When your sails are up, you never know when you may need to run forward to fix something as simple as a snagged sheet during a tack. While I have no desire to do what you're doing, my hope is to someday sail from my home port of Saint John, NB, to the Bras 'd'or Lakes in Cape Breton. In an earlier video, you mentioned that a friend recommended buying a copy of the Nova Scotia guide put out by the Cruising Club of America. If you haven't done so, and if you plan to return to the Maritimes (it covers NB too, including the St. John River), I highly recommend that book too. It's an invaluable resource written by local experienced sailors.
We will definitely have to pick up a copy because that was something we wished we had. Jordan is from Saint John area as well. She moved to Halifax in 2017. Cheers!
@@sethandjordan If you're ever in the area the Kennebecasis and St. John Rivers have a lot of great spots to anchor. The club I belong to doesn't have any space for overnighters, but the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht club does. It's a bit stuffy though. A little further up the river is the Rothesay Yacht Club and my experience with them is that they are down-to-earth and welcoming. The St. John is often called the Rhine of North America, and it is a beautiful river. Unfortunately for sailors, once you get above a stretch called Long Reach, unless the winds are perfect, the channel is too narrow to sail. Take care!
do you know if there's liveaboard slips up that way?
I am not sure, we didn't stay long enough to find out
Great stuff, you two!
Need a lot of forts to protect against those crafty Canadians
I will be in Portsmouth for dinner tonight! Great town! Great vid guys! When you get to “Glawstah” enjoy … Will you be coast hugging down the east coast or heading out into the mighty Atlantic?
That's fun and thank you!! We will be coastal hopping the whole way. We still have a lot to learn.
You guys are a hoot!! Loved the video and Jordon’s moves behind the helm.
Why thank you! helps to have good music playing ;)
Enjoying your videos! Most of us Maine sailors have our boats hauled out this time of year.
Hi, this video was taking back in November, we are playing some catch up with the uploads hehe
Always nice to see you are making your way to warmer climes....
If you come through Portland again, reach out to me. We moor our boat near where you guys anchored and it is sad to thinking of you guys hoofing your way to Walmart. I like the tempo and energy in your videos. Also, as we plan on heading for the Caribbean in a couple of years, it is always exciting to see others who are traveling south. Thanks for the videos. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks for the offer, we will definitely keep you in mind if we are back that way :) And thanks for your support too!!
@@sethandjordan One more thing... My wife and I just got folding bikes for our boat and they are fantastic. Total game changer. Those trips to Walmart would be more fun and nobody would be heckling you to get a job.
Dimillos Marina would have been a better place to tuck into with your dingy. The town pier is rough and the schooner charter people think they own it but they don't. Those old schooner crew smell and drink like fish. I tied up behind one with my 50ft Steel Ketch for a winter and had to replace all of my anodes that spring because they leaked current and had like 20 cords going into their boat. The summer in Portland is real nice but you get a lot of cruise ship people too. I lived and sailed out of there for 15 yrs. It's full of crazy liberal socialist Bernie Sanders kooks. 😄
Good to note, thanks for the tip!!
