Fantastic work! Can’t wait to see the finished product of this one. Loving the videos and your attention to detail!
I've seen your work and I'm equally impressed.
thank you for this helpful video!
Ihave a 2245 I got it a few days ago for 65 dollars

This is a neat and comprehensive work. I really like your idea of using socket to install transistors and how you raised the resistors, I will use this approach in my next projects. I was studying the SM to better understand this amplifier, it seems to have been engineered based on discrete components, which I like very much because of the warm sound it produces. Also, I understand that C006 and C007 are there to block DC to the speakers, but have you considered adding a reversible project to install a startup protection relay for extra protection?
I'm not sure if add a speaker protect circuit/relay. On this unit? Probably not. Yes C006/C007 does block DC. They're also directly in the audio path and connected to the speaker outputs. Use a audio grade cap.
Beautiful work! I’m gonna keep your philosophy in mind when I start my next unit: I’m just gonna do my best! That’s all I can do, really.
Glad to hear! Yes, just do your best!
I an a retired electronics pro that worked for +50 years slinging solder and parts. Now I restore antique radios to keep out of trouble. When it comes to soldering people tend to use way too much solder and never enough resin. My favorite solder for general electronics is Kester 44 dia .032. The alloy needs to be Sn63 which is eutectic. I have found that the brass wool is way better that the wet sponge I used for many decades. A great replacement is my wife's Chore Boy. Be sure you have a supply of RA Flux that will easily wash off. I have used both IPA (not beer) and Brake Kleen to wash down boards after repairs. If you repair anything that will be exposed to harsh environments give it a quick coat of conformal coating or a quick blast of Krylon clear coat over anything you soldered. Sometimes adding some "fresh" sn63 to a joint makes it way easier to suck up the 'old' solder. It lowers the melt temp and is less likely to damage an old board. Get a small muffin or table top fan to clear the air. If you do a lot of soldering get a desktop smoke extractor. As to Thanksgiving foods? Spiced Apple rings are my favorite treat. Musselman's used to make them so now they have to be homemade.
Great advise! I'm still learning! Thank you!
Nice technique, clean tip with the proper amount of solder. and heat transfer to the joint.

Thank you! You are very inspiring...... am restoring one of the last 2270's
Good video. I’m swapping my 2270 to a black faceplate & black lacquer wood cabinet next week. I call it the “Darth Vader” edition. 😂
My new favorite channel. You are super inspiring and funny. I do this kind of work also, as well as speaker design, crossover design and upgrades and veneering. Let me know if you ever want to collaborate on a project!
Will do and thanks!
Man I was having a rough day and you really cheered me. Thank you. I like pumpkin pie…with whipped cream!
I'm so glad!
Good job on the soldering - looks like factory done!
Getting better. Thanks!
I love old Marantz gear. I have an old SR4400 6.1 surround. I run my Rega P1 through it. Sounds really good.
Six years as an electronics tech in the Navy and 40 years repairing office machines and I did a lot of soldering.and you're doing it better than me! I'm 67 and we just bought a new much bigger house. Now every family get together is at my house. I didn't think this through!
@@mikecampbell5856 I appreciate the compliment. I’m definitely better than I was.
LOL at the inhalation, and maybe some safety glasses as well. Thanks for the video.
I bought a 1060 when i was 16, and donated it when i was 60 still working. It's one hell of an amp.. good to see people think its worth all the work to save and use.. thanks
Hello New subscriber good video informative ✌️

Brilliant video, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks, will do!
It might be time for a fume extractor, we don't want you croaking on us.
I was looking at those on that jungle website.
@@PossibleAudio I was looking for one, then I saw Fran Blanche using this 'FA-400 Antidious Fume Extractor w/ filter' on her channel. I bought one on the jungle site, it works.
That was a good and neat job! I hear you that sometimes we foresee that the project will be quick but it takes a long time. You were very patient. My soldering and desoldering skills were absolutely horrible (and I still have to do a better job), so years ago I took same training on YT from EEVblog and xraytonyb because I was just damaging the PCB and taking forever to desolder components. Look forward to seeing your next project. I wish you Happy Thanksgiving too. (PS- I also like to eat good food, but I can’t cook anything… so when my wife doesn’t cook, I usually have to buy food at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, etc.)
Been waiting (impatiently) to view part four this is so helpful. Who ever suggested using flux, what a great tip! Thank you! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I smoke a Turkey. My favorite is cornbread sausage dressing that I prepare a day ahead so my wife can have the kitchen Thanksgiving Day.
@@Geoduck. Thanks! I’m working on the P700. It’s going to be a long when I think.
Cornbread Sausage Dressing sounds really good.
Did you find any mislabeling on the board for the transistors lead positioning?
@@curtwheeler5019 Do you have the service manual? I have not started rebuilding my 1060 yet. Check the service manual to the board. Also some updated transistors may have their legs changed. Be very sure to check the data sheet.

Nice work. For my Rotel receiver, I bought small warm white led strips from AliExpress for next to nothing. I added a strip of tracing paper -almost the same as the vellum but I already had it in. Works well. Btw, I love the wooden prop on your wall. Something I've always wanted.
Got the propeller used off Facebook marketplace. It's not real, but looks great. I paid $30 for it.
@PossibleAudio I need one then. That looks awesome.
@@LawsonsStudio Thanks!
Great video man!!!! I’m thinking about doing a restoration project this winter. Thank you!!!
Fantastic instructions - thank you!
Why would anyone want a mono just left or right?
@@LawsonsStudio That’s a good question and I don’t have an answer for it.
NOS for sound. Yea, I'm subscribing. Seriously, I came to view the lamp and vellum video and couldn't stop watching.
I have a similar preamp from the same era, are the transistors Germainum?
@@martinten5236 I have absolutely no idea.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 no words to say.
The ceramic capacitor is probably just for high frequency decoupling.
I noticed the preamp board on my Marantz 2245 didn't have these. 1/2 of the transistors had a much different shape. I used the same value transistors on the 1060 as the 2245. I can't hear any problems or issues.
I see them at goodwill an karm stores all the time.real cheap.20 an 25 dollars.im going to get me one.and try recapping or whatever it needs.you are very good at what you know.
Good job man keep it up
Hey man you are doing a fantastic job I wished I knew as much as you did just testing working on these little radios every now and then
This is a good and impeccable job! WIMA caps are a good choice for replacing small electrolytics. This amp must sound amazing playing vinyl too.
I hope when its done, it is amazing.
@@PossibleAudio This weekend I was restoring a turntable from the late 70s. It is a DD QL. There were about 10 electrolytic caps (ELNA). I used your approach of measuring them after they were removed from the PCB. Perhaps a couple measured OK, but most measured +50% capacitance over the spec. So, the 10uF ones were measuring about 15uF, pretty bad! The 33 rpm was not locking, the 45 rpm was - this may be one of the reasons. The “monster glue” was all around the PS caps and some diodes and a resistor. I removed all, and cleaned the PCB. I will install new ones this week. I will use your approach also and will install WIMA film to replace the small electrolytic ones, probably 1uF and below.
I was initially using my old Chinese Desoldering Station S-993A. I bought it in 2018 and did a lot of vintage audio equipment restorations with it. I kept it clean and replaced its nozzle and filter as needed. But, OMG, it can be dangerous. Something happened with its internal pump. I was using it this weekend and it was melting the solder on the PBC as it should, but it was not sucking the air/solder properly. In the end it damaged a few pads. I stopped using it and went back to the safer method of desoldering wick. I will try to fix the damaged pads, some are in bad shape. I’ve heard that the Hakko FR301-03 is good but it costs over $300 - I will keep it in my “wish list” for now…
@@kylesmithiii6150 Folks swear by the Hakko FR301. I've heard nothing but good things. Expensive like you're saying. If I keep doing this as a long term hobby, I'll sell off a piece of equipment to buy better tools like the Hakko FR301. I'd like to do another Marantz 1060. It's just so easy to rebuild.
@@kylesmithiii6150 I need to go through my Technics SL-D2
What model of transistor did you replace and with what? What was the modification with the wima's next to the filter caps. If possible please point out on the schematic what you are doing. I know it's a pain but it's the difference between show and tell and education.
Over time there were different variations of of the Marantz 1060. They didn't update the Service Manual. With that in mind... H401, H402, H405, H406 KSC1815. For H403/404/407 408 I used KSA992. This is at your own risk. I recommend joining Audiokarma as there are folks there that can guide you through any issues. The mod with the large filter caps was a joke. The only real mod I did was not reinstalling the small ceramic capacitors that joined the collectors of the transistors. I left them out. Working fine for me. Also the transistors used were a guess based on my Marantz 2245 which has a very similar P400 board. This build is more of a show and tell, but a lot of useful information here and there normally in my videos. I got in a hurry on this one as its been a busy week and I' tired. I can tell you the P700 board which is the main amplifier board, is getting 95% disassembled and rebuilt. Taking more time with videos on it. Should be a good one. All the best!
@@PossibleAudio Right on, thanks for the reply! I guess to make things easier you could add a link to the Audiokarma thread so people can follow along. Have a great weekend!
@@PossibleAudio Thank you very much and your videos are entertaining and pleasing to watch .
I'm really enjoying this series. My Marantz 2220b sounds great but you're making me want to replace the filter caps and other caps that a man on eBay is selling. He has 100% positive feedback and thousands of sales. I'm retired and I have the time. Why not?
Do it! Thanks!
Fantastic work. Thanks for the video!
I think working with solder wick won't be effective, just use solder suck pump instead.
@@leonidbreshnew401 Thanks for the advice!
I’m scared to try it but want to so bad, I like you want to prove it to myself. I just subscribed to your channel, great job man you’re a great inspiration
Thanks for the sub!
Anything precautions I need to take before doing this?
Join Audiokarma.com and get a parts list there. Great group to help if you have questions or run into trouble. Videos by AH-Fix-it on RUclips are really good to watch. I also recommend buying an old VCR or stereo receiver that broke for $5 or $10. Use it to practice soldering.
you can also cut the braid so the heat isn't being wicked up to the roll. The smaller pieces heat up much faster and soak super easy.
Thanks for the info!
Are you gonna sell the 1060 ?
Undecided. If I do, it will be early 2025.
@ thx
Thanks for the tour. I have 2 of these in original condition and I've lifted the cover to clear the dust and always wondered what all that stuff is. May I ask what is a suitable lube for the switches as a couple of mine are a little sticky. Looking forward to your next video on this one.
2 of them must be nice! I'm going to do a separate video on cleaning and lubricating the switches. It will come out in about 5-6 weeks.
One of my first pieces of gear when I was 15 wish I would have kept it
It's never to late to get another!
Still have mine. A few years ago I replaced a few caps, this has me thinking maybe I should dig back in there... Suggestion - a list of parts removed, and a list of replacements for each video? Thxs.
If you go to Audiokarma you'll find many build threads with folks sharing parts lists on the Marantz 1060. I'm not listing parts on this rebuild series as I'm modifying/experimenting with of many parts. I'd hate to see you end up with a lot of problems to sort out. The folks on Audiokarma are great and can get you started. Thanks!
@@PossibleAudio Ok, makes sense.
Great job buddy. I admire your dedication and persistence.
I appreciate that!
Thank you for sharing ......just left me with a question what type of transistor to replace the original one on the ower board ?
KSC2383
@@PossibleAudio Thank you very much....I work with tubes since almost 7 decades but transistors are a different technology , I have a vintage collection tubes and transistors , The 1060 was my first transistor amplifier in 1975 , I still cherish it ...
That's a good video and a good job. You did a thorough analysis between what was installed in the factory and what the Service Manual states, I found similar discrepancies when restoring some JVC vintage audio equipment also. I guess there might have been updates in the Service Manual while the equipment was still in production.
Yes, changes are often made during production runs, but the service manuals rarely get updated to reflect. Sometimes a service bulletin will come out for a major change or upgrade. Thanks!
