Camping & Exploring Fontainebleau, France (£80 from London by train)
In August, my wife and I jumped on the Eurostar from London to Paris, then buying a ticket to Fontaineableau which covered the metro and R line. In total, it cost £80 to get from London to Fontainebleau, where we walked to a free bivouac site (camping area) and spent the night. The following day we hiked around the famous forest, visited the Chateau, and ate at a lovely vegan restaurant. It was a great start to a two week, plane-free holiday which took us to Paris, Fontainebleau, Dijon, Chamonix and Lyon.

Mont Buet via Cheval Blanc: 3000m peak in Chamonix French Alps
Просмотров 107Месяц назад
After completing the TMB in July, I went back to Chamonix with my wife in August to summit our first 3,000m peak - Mont Buet. Instead of following the classic, easier route from Le Buet up to Refuge de Bérard, then up to the summit and back the same way, we decided to opt for a bigger, more challenging route which would involve some scrambling (with the help of some chains and ropes), a quick v...
My Tour du Mont Blanc in detail: gear, guidebook, camping, weather + more!
Просмотров 438Месяц назад
In July 2024 I completed the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) with my friend, Diana. We decided to do this hike just two months before and to camp the whole thing, so I spent two months researching as much as I could, getting lighter gear, choosing a guide book, and watching other people's RUclips videos. In this video I hope to share some of the tips and considerations that should help others plan the...
Pen-Y-Fan Extended Horseshoe + Sunset & Sunrise - First Bivvy
Просмотров 19Месяц назад
After some Aurora sightings the night before, I hastily drove to the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons National Park in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights whilst hiking the Pen Y Fan Horseshoe for a second time - this time I would extend it to pick up two additional peaks. Did I see the Aurora? No. But I saw a beautiful sunrise and sunset and learned a lot in the process of my first bivvy...

On the first weekend of August, home after completing the tour du Mont Blanc, my wife and I went to Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) to summit some peaks of the Carneddau range. We had intended to complete six summits, but strong winds made us set up camp early and then head straight back to the Ogwen Valley in the morning, completing four summits and a wild camp. The mountains we summited were:...

Wye Valley Walk - Tintern & Monmouth circular with campsite

One week after our weekend walk between Tintern and Chepstow, we returned to the Wye Valley to complete the next section of the River Wye on both sides, following Offa's Dyke footpath on the east and the Wye Valley Way on the west. We stayed a paid campsite (£7.50 each) and were able to get Wetherspoon's dinner in Monmouth - relative luxury!
Wye Valley Circular Hike: Tintern & Chepstow + Wild Camp

This circular hike can start in Tintern or Chepstow, completing a circuit that covers both sides of the river Wye between the two towns, picking up sections of the Wye Valley Way, Offa's Dyke footpath and the Wye Valley Greenway. It can be completed in a single, full day out, or split into two days with a sneaky wild camp somewhere on the way - but remember to leave no trace!

Field review of Alpkit Jaran 2 in Alps after 30 nights in this ultralight tent

I completed the Tour du Mont Blanc on July 28th and only thought about doing it two months before. As soon as I started researching, everything suggested it would cost thousands of pounds and need planning 9-12 months before, but I wasn't interested in luggage transfer and busy refuges; I wanted to do it on the cheap, camping and wild camping as much as possible, and I spent the next two months...

      Thanks ☺️ I just turned up to each one without any issues. Many will save some spaces for people doing the TMB even if they’re turning others away because they’re full. When I went back in August, the campsite in Chamonix itself was completely full a couple of times though, but there are many more further down the valley around Les Bossons, for example.

      @ja.ssch. Месяц назад

      @@רוןהראל-ס6ע Thanks 😌 So we were actually under 2500m…🤫 But there were lots of spots if you continue after Bonatti and so many people were wild camping around there. Just be sure to set up late and pack away early 🙂 The first great spot is by an abandoned farmhouse which is visible from Bonatti, and if you continue for a km or two after that, there is some flat ground right by the path where we saw about 10 people camping - unfortunately we stopped before seeing this and ended up sliding down the tent all night! 🤣 If you really want to stick to the rules, Pas entre deux sauts is a great spot which is above 2500m and we were really tempted to camp there, but it was still early and we were hoping to get some dinner at Bonatti so we kept going. I’ve just finished editing another TMB video where I share my tips and narrate all this footage, so keep an eye out for that one 🙂

In fact, I even prepared it in hotel rooma because I wanted to lay back on the room rather than going out to the restaurant area. I also bagged it like you. But i think next time I will juat tale a huel bag. One tip though: just boil thr water and thrownthr huel in in thr pot you boil thr water. No need to carry extra containers.

    Wait where did you camp in Courmayeur?

    • @ja.ssch.
      @ja.ssch. Месяц назад

      @@M0esmac Courmayeur is a tricky place for camping as all the campsites are outside of the town. We camped at a place called ‘Hobo Camping’ which is super popular with TMB hikers and a really nice campsite - especially to pass a storm as it has a cosy hut with board games etc. and Italian coffee of course 😌 You have to take a bus, taxi or shuttle to get there, or to the other campsite nearby. If you continue a bit further, there is a campsite called Camping Grandes Jorasses - this one is right by the contour variant route so it’s a lot of zig zagging to get back up onto the main whaleback ridge, but that was one of my favourite parts of the TMB and is very quiet since so many people opt for the easier, lower, more direct but less scenic variant to Rifugio Bonatti 😊

      @@TheBananaine thanks ☺️ I would recommend the Aires de Bivouac (free camping spots) at Refuge de Miage and Refuge de la Balme, and you can definitely wild camp through the Italian and Swiss parts as long as you set up late out of sight of roads etc and pack away early :) You can get screw on gas in Decathlon in Chamonix too which was a worry of mine as I couldn’t bring gas on the plane. And there are good camping shops in Courmayeur and at La Fouly where you can get high energy snacks and dehydrated meals, so no need to carry a lot of food, just a few days’ worth if you don’t want to spend any money at refuges in between. Best of luck! It’s an amazing experience 🤩
