Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS Review - A Versatile Powerhouse?
thanks for the explanation. I am still a bit confused about focus modes vs. focus area modes. Say I am taking a photo of a moving subject. If I choose an AF-C mode on the Nikon, can't i just use a Single Point AF area mode to track the focus of my moving subject as long as I press and keep holding a shutter release button before I am ready to take the final shot? Why do I need the camera to have all the rest of the points that it gives me in Dynamic or Group area modes? Or are those additional focus area options there in case I do not have enough time to set my single focus point somewhere on a subject just in time before I am ready to take that shot and so those additional points help me ensure that the focus will be somewhere in the vicinity of that moving subject's area? In other words, choosing a focus mode like AF-C alone is not enough for the camera to track the focus, it must be paired with at least one of the area focus modes so that the camera knows how small or how large of an area it has to deal with to maintain that focus while the subject is moving, correct?
Excellent work
Thank you! Cheers!

I have a Canon Rebel T7. What are the best settings for quick shots, during sports or people moving in general. Also what lenses do you suggest for long distance ex. Taking pictures from the sidelines of football games.
For quick shots during sports or when capturing moving subjects with your Canon Rebel T7, here are some recommended settings: Mode: Use Shutter Priority (Tv) mode, allowing you to set a fast shutter speed while the camera automatically adjusts the aperture. Shutter Speed: Aim for a shutter speed of at least 1/500s or faster to freeze motion. For very fast action, you might need 1/1000s or higher. ISO: Set your ISO to Auto if the lighting conditions vary. If you know the lighting will be consistent, start with ISO 400-800 and adjust as needed. Aperture: If using Shutter Priority, the camera will adjust the aperture for you. If you switch to Manual mode, a wider aperture (e.g., f/4 or f/5.6) will help with low light and give a nice background blur. Focus Mode: Use AI Servo AF for continuous focusing on moving subjects. This will help the camera track fast-moving subjects better. In terms of lenses, I would recommend checking out the "Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM" or just any lens longer than 50mm!
This is a great video!
Thank you!
I am interested in hiring you if you're taking on clients for my photography business
Thanks, Nate. QUESTION - There is another method I have seen BUT I have no clue how it was done: Select and zoom in to an area or detail WHILE using the brush tool in LR Classic? I can't find where on YT I saw this, but the narrator did not say how he was doing that - gotta be a held-down key to change from the brush to a + cursor to select an area to zoom into? Thanks again.
Try this, might work! Hold down the spacebar - When you hold the spacebar, your cursor temporarily changes from the brush tool to the zoom tool. Click on the area you want to zoom into - While holding down the spacebar, simply click on the area you want to zoom in on. This will zoom in to that specific area without having to switch tools.
@@natetorresphotography Thank you! - That is helpful and it works great. Call me spoiled, but what I am aiming to do is be able to switch the cursor to allow pulling a window/selection of the area of interest. I saw a guy do just that on youtube while he was using the brush tool in LR Classic. May he edited a detail out.
@@AerialLensVideo ahh I see I believe you're referring to the "scrubby zoom tool" try hold Ctrl+Shift for windows / Cmd+Shift for mac and then move cursor left or right to zoom in/out
@@natetorresphotography THAT is really cool and certainly does the trick - THANKS! I was looking for something that allows you to select a particular area to zoom into, kind of like 1) placing the cursor on the upper left of a desired "window" for a zoom area, then 2) holding the right mouse button and DRAGGING a window area to the desired size of the Zoom, but done WHILE the brush or tool is active. I see that can be done by holding down the Command key, with no tool being active. Your suggestion is great however - I love it. Much appreciated!
how is the aperture so low, accordingly more open, during the day when its so bright outside and the photo is not so bright and almost white?
The exposure triangle (what controls exposure or high bright/dark your image is) is controlled by the three elements of aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. You can have a low/wide aperture and then make adjustments to the ISO and shutter speed to help balance exposure in your image. I recommend checking out my videos on exposure to learn more about the exposure triangle and how to balance all three elements for proper exposure in your image
@@natetorresphotography yep thank you, i just watched a lot of videos about this triangle and still dont get why the photos dont turn out the way i expect and want when i follow the steps for the settings..
@@demetradoycheva feel free to email me with the photo and your aperture, ISO, and shutter speed setting for that photo at nate@imaginated.com, I could take a look Also other details like camera type, lens, shooting mode (manual, automatic, macro mode, etc.) would be helpful
@@natetorresphotography yeah id love to! my main problem is the light - for example i have ss 1/60 : a 4.5 : iso 100 and the photo is dark (around 19h outside or in a room with a lamp) ... even the focus is not so good. and i dont wanna fix it by simply using a flash, cause even with it is not working sometimes haha
@@demetradoycheva ISO needs to be higher not lower when working in really low light! Like ISO 6400 or above

Which of the three lenses you suggest are good for night sky photography?
Night sky photography means you want a lens with a wider aperture like f/1.8 so you can better capture in low light and a medium to wide focal length like 24mm to 50mm to capture the night scene. Out of the three lenses I recommended I would just go for the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM as it's relatively affordable and you can use it for other things as well. But if not then you can also go with something with a wider field of view like the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM!
@@natetorresphotography Thank you. Can you recommend a good tripod or a "star tracker?
@@shanarhinehart1593 for tripod, I personally just use the Amazon basics one! In terms of star tracker I have never used one so can't say!

I've had an EOS rebel T6 for a few years, and i recently gifted it to my wife who really wants to get into photography. This was incredibly helpful and thorough. I have one question, what would you recommend for indoor sports photography, like basketball for instance? I'd really appreciate any feedback.
Glad you found it helpful! If budget is a concern, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a great entry-level choice (the one mentioned in the video). If you can invest more, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM or the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM are excellent options for indoor sports photography. It also depends on how far she is from the court and if she wants to capture wide view shots of the whole court or really zoomed in shots of the players. If that she will be shooting from the bleachers, the shorter focal length like 50mm will be for wider shots like capturing more of the court and players, the more zoomed in lenses like 85mm will be for more close up shots of players! Just remember that with the Canon Rebel t6 that it's a crop sensor camera so whatever focal length of the lens is times it by 1.6
@@natetorresphotography awesome thanks! I picked up the 50 and now I’ll have to check out that 85! Really appreciate the feedback. It’s been super helpful and you just gained another subscriber! I’m just getting into car videography myself.

Brother I've been watching this video for over 3 days trying to learn them from me. I've been following the biggest channels on RUclips for years and no one had seen a video as complete as this. If I ever become a professional photographer, I will be eternally grateful.
I'm glad you found it helpful! Yes I'm sure you will become one, thanks for watching!
So, its just a quick way to make those changes (SS/F-stop) without having to make the changes? I see now - that chart makes it very clear. It changes the shutter speed for a given f-stop. I've seen some stuff in 3d field that's indicating something about how our eyes re-adjust to major light changes. Does that have something to do with it in photography? Like when someone shuts the light off or turns it on - it takes a few seconds to adjust in your eyes.
Yes, you've got it! The exposure value (EV) system is a quick way to balance the shutter speed (SS) and f-stop to achieve the right exposure without manually adjusting each setting. The chart simplifies this process, showing you how changes in one setting (like f-stop) affect the other (shutter speed) to maintain the same exposure. Regarding how our eyes adjust to light changes, it's similar to how cameras adjust exposure. When a light source suddenly changes, our eyes need a few seconds to adapt, which is called dark adaptation or light adaptation. In photography, this is managed by adjusting the settings to ensure the camera sensor captures the right amount of light, similar to how our eyes work to maintain proper vision under different lighting conditions.

The composition of this portrait is superb. There is nothing like natural light for portraiture specially if the film used is the legendary and sadly missed Kodachrome 64. The exposure had to be absolutely spot on since he was using a transparency and no room for mistake. Much of the appeal of the photograph is due to that irreplaceable colour palette of the Kodachrome 64. Although this photographed has stolen the headlines, he shot a whole series of portraits of the Afghan refugees which are all a lesson in how to photograph, and all that without a single pixel in sight.
