That section that starts at about 3:21 is the most badass rhythm part I can think of.

Mick Taylor was just 20 years old here - and already he was the best musician the Stones ever had - (with the possible exception of Charlie Watts) - opening the show on this day was a new band called "King Crimson" - they had not yet released their groundbreaking debut record - but were already the toast of the town - their original line-up would break up soon after the record's release 4 months after this show ..

That's a stupid looking outfit Jagger's got on.

This is a concert that probably never should have happened. Founding member, Brian Jones had just died 2 days before the concert in early July, 1969. Brian had been responsible for the birth of the Rolling Stones and he defined the early sound of the Stones and his continuous experimentation and innovation sparked it forward. The concert was then billed as a tribute concert but the Stones should have been questioned if that was accurate. Was the concert just an example of their vanity, narcissism and need to grab attention? Certainly, Jagger wearing a dress did not seem very mournful and playing violent songs such Midnight Rambler and Sympathy for the Devil did not seem remorseful. Stylistically, the band seemed lethargic on stage for most of the time and their guitars were sluggish and out of tune. Their depression and reluctance came through in their music. Still, no one in the audience seemed to mind because no one had heard them play live for several years. In retrospect, it was all a strange time. The world was burning up every day in Vietnam and on the streets of Chicago and Los Angeles. War and racial injustice were prevalent. People had looked to the Stones for something they could never provide: heroism and leadership. The band were not political figures, negotiators or uniters of the people. They simply played the blues and their music reflected the violence of the times. C'est la vie.
