    (firstly, yes I am weird) I do love boats (I have a classic Ski King being restored and converted to electric), but I can't help but look down on people with massive luxury yachts. It seems like they just thought "It is uncomfortable sitting on this pile of money. I must spend it on something totally useless, that will need to be fed more money constantly. That'll show everyone how great I am." These people need 3 things: a better financial adviser, a better therapist, and some empathy.

    I could see a place for this boat with line handlers at a port for ships. I'll bet if you look at actual times and distance working a small boat around marinas, shipyards and ports, this could be a great option. Especially if you leave and return to the same dock all the time to plug in a charger. Maybe put solar panels on top to supplement charging? It's all about finding the right tool for the job.

    Super cool and probably fun to drive. But I don't know many commercial operators who need a boat that can only run on plane for 1 hour. It's a huge problem for the marine industry, bigger than cars as boats are just not very efficient. The people hitting those maintenance periods so quickly are running their boats constantly all day and pure electric just can't do that. We really need to come up with another solution. Hydrogen? Clean ICE engines? I wish I knew the simple answer. We need Something where I can run a boat out 15 miles and back and not have to worry. I am not even sure if that boat could do one of our research trips though I would love to give it a try

    Prop design and optimisation for electric motors is critical. What's the battery bank details Chemistry, location etc. Tidy work boat but throwing a lot of wake... adding a generator would give it emergency range and endurance for complex night time and bad conditions operations when an operator has to hang around and possibly recover another vesel.

      that 3 ton battery is pushing a ship that is 965 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 93,558. in comparison thats like the size of your toaster oven on your little 40 foot boat hahahaha

      It is completely unrealistic to repower with electric for anything much over 100HP. Mostly what makes sense is something between 10 and 70 horsepower, depending on budget and performance requirements. A complete package in that range will cost between $10,000 and $25,000. A 200 horsepower system will easily run in the six figure range.

    Justin, it seems too many electric motors manufacturers are not thinking outside the box. They’re trying to keep the old style outboard bulbous or inboard motors familiar style with electric technology. Why not open a new way to look at an outboard, as an out/inboard? A short, low profile outboard electric motor with a flat walkable (synthetic teak) top was an possible great idea. Electric motors allows building such a shape to fit in the space normally reserved for two outboards. Fit a short, boxy double prop motor that fills the space that the outboards motors would normally utilize. The motor box could become part of the aft platform with a walkable, synthetic teak top. Also it also allows space for a tender. The boat appear to be an inboard motored boat, without the inboard shaft hole going to the hull motor. There would be more room for extra batteries, etc. Rotating or telescoping up or down to take props out of the water for cleaning or servicing. Replacements/upgrades would be as easily done as an outboard, and lessen the water ingress into the hull concerns. This seems like a great idea that thinks outside the box.

    Several of the showings were really interesting. One of them was the edorado foiling system that could navigate shallower waters. Which manufacturers will be adding that technology and what will be the additional final costs and what would be the range advantage especially considering we’re talking electric propulsion?

    I think hybrids are a good thing, for now. But for tomorrow it won’t be unless hydrogen becomes a practical thing using sea water. It seems improving battery technology and using solar could be the future of “sailing without sails”, not speed boating (energy drain would be too much too fast). Slow comfortable, quiet, UNLIMITED cruising enjoying the comfortable interiors that boats today are nicely focused on.

      There are some examples already of 'solar sailing' such as the Elevene Amber which has indefinite range under sunlight, and some energy in reserve with its batteries. Thank you for your comments!

    It seems that the ratio of outboards to inboards is swayed towards outboards when to me, inboard boats are smaller and not as much room for batteries.

      Yes, there are some benefits at drawbacks to both. Outboards are great for servicing, operating in shallow water, and you claim more interior volume, while with inboards you get more stern access, easier to climb in and out of your boat, easier to tow for commercial. And battery room can be a challenge, but becoming less so as we are seeing different shapes of HV batteries come on the market. Thanks very much for your comment Larry!

    Thanks for this Justin. Can I ask you to encourage these manufacturers to demand that control throttle levers be guarded? It is far too easy to accidentally bump a throttle and with electric drives, the instant torque can instantly cause a serious accident. I'd like to see a wire guard adjacent to the lever- something you can rest the heal of your hand upon while manipulating the throttle. Alternatively, a button release on the throttle lever, so you have to press a button with your thumb to move the lever.

      I wholeheartedly agree. Especially with high power motors, there should be a few safety layers built in because accidentally knocking a throttle lever could be violent and catastrophic considering the instant power and torque. Many electric throttle levers I've seen do have button locks, and there are also protections in the software, such as docking mode, and the software's interpretation of the signal as to how much to ramp up the power, and not deliver it all instantly. Some sort of easy but deliberate two step process to engage the throttle is a great idea.

    A hybrid model would seem to be a good option for boats given the weight of batteries, ie. a compact battery solution with an ICE (petrol / diesel) charger. That way we could have all the benefits of those clever 360 degree turning units & control systems plus plenty of range & the convenience of conventional refueling.

      As a newbie to maritime anything, i would think weight could be a good thing if it is located low to act as a lead keel in a boat. I’d be curious to know about the ip rating or any flooding worries.

      @@yanassi You are correct, there are many benefits to weight in a boat. When placed correctly, it acts with the center of buoyancy to create a 'righting moment', when a vessel under roll re-centers itself. It is also great for heavy weather, helping to knock down waves. All of these HV batteries are rated IP 67, but I would still want to see testing data from these manufactureres

      Vince, I've driven a number of electric outboards, and absolutely the technology is on par or better than gas - its the energy storage that needs to catch up. As for the phone, I've also driven a number of boats using a yacht controller and dock mate, and I would guess the phone would be no different. I probably wouldn't use it on a windy day!     A year already .... mind you a lots been going on in the world. 🧙🏼‍♂️🇬🇧 Think the word you were looking for was rim drive Impeller. The Slimline blade of the Seabird was both practical and elegant .. especially given boats with rear bathing platforms. With those you can have two and space between ... Still not seeing all the companies using the more efficient electric multiblade larger props and regen on smaller units for sailing vessels might be a good step. Still more boats should use shrouded or ducted props to protect other water users and wildlife from prop lacerations.. and to increased efficiencies. The submerged cartridge system i dont think will work for Marine vessels.. 🤔 the likes of CATL and BYD are already producing automotive packs for offroad, including yes an amphibious off roader given the standard 800v architecture they are IP military rated watertight ... the packs can be very fast charging offer 600 Mile 1000Km ranges and the prices are dropping like a waterlogged railway sleeper .. the progection is 50% by next year whilst the power density increases by about 20% Li S batteries are also incomming as are improved generation Na ion cells. Even cheaper..😁 they are also building packs that should have a million mile life spans and can also charge incredibly fast. Thats longer than most cars projected lives. Take a look at the progress made by Edison motors and their Electric powered hybrid logging truck Topsy. Plus the new gen 2 BYD blade Li Fe Posphate cells now generate 2kwhr per Kilo are super safe and durable and extreemly temperature independant especially at low temperatures... theres no need for heating.     Fantastic fail. try putting an alternator and extra battery on a gas powered boat, double the efficiency, now you have something. Electric motors are way to far off. boaters go out for the day, sun up to sun down. not 1-2 hours.

    EV technology is great! I've enjoyed having a high power 75hp Stealth electric outboard on my 17' bow rider runabout. Excellent choice for the type of lake boating we enjoy.     Nice video.There's a lot of good marine EV applications available. I've been enjoying our high power Stealth electric outboard. Our 16' bow-rider has a top speed of 27 mph and a 20+ mile range. The 144v water cooled 75hp motor is powered by 3-180ah NMC batteries. It's perfect for the type of boating we enjoy. View on you tube: marks gas to electric boat conversion.

    Holy cow, this industry needs serious sales people that actually know how to communicate effectively and with passion. Also seemed like many of them didn’t really understand their product.
