All military personnel in uniform and out of formation will stand at attention for Retreat, and at the first note of To The Colors they will render a salute. Military personnel in formation will wait for who ever is in charge of the formation to put the personnel at parade rest for Retreat, and present arms (salute) for To The Colors. In 2006, I remember walking by Fort Dix HQ as a young E4 right before 1700. The DoD Police do the flag duty there and they were getting ready to fire the cannon. The guys called me over and asked me if I wanted to fire the cannon. Even though no one other than us and my buddy were around, I felt like I was on stage with thousands watching... Everything went off (literally) without a hitch. My buddy was able to snap a pic with my 6 megapixel camera 🤣🤣🤣. One of my fond memories of Fort Dix. Probably the only fond memory of that place.
