Juli Rox Art
Канада
Добавлен 1 янв 2017
In the daytime, I’m Juli. Just a normal girl, with a normal life. . . No, I’m not a bug-themed superhero-no matter how much I wish that were the case. I am, however, a slow jogger, a mother of two. . . parakeets, and an amateur artist!
This channel is both a hobby and an outlet of mine. Perhaps it’ll become something more in the future. Perhaps it won’t. Either way, my goal is to enjoy life-while fully embracing the ups and downs that come with pursuing a creative spark. Thank you for stopping by my tiny corner of the internet. Whether you’re a fellow amateur artist in search of encouragement, or looking to make your own art supplies from scratch, I’m sure you’ll find a video that you connect with.
With love,
Juli Rox

Your art supply collection has gotten out of hand. . .
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.14 дней назад
Let's talk about the problem that is your art supply collection. First off, calling it a "collection" in itself is an issue. Secondly, the whole concept of hoarding art supplies, only to use them. . . never, is also a major problem. I do often wonder, when did we as crafters and artists start normalizing the overconsumption of art supplies? Buying the latest paint palettes, markers, stamps, scr...
HOMEMADE Watercolor Paper ~ 3 years later *update*

Hello lovelies! Today's video features my homemade/handmade cotton watercolor paper that I made over three years ago. I test them out with both watercolor and gouache to show how they've held up over time. It was in equal parts fun and frustrating to work with this paper. But hey, at least I walked away with one of three pieces that I'm happy with. It's the little things ^^ Reference Photos: Le...

They are so adorable, and they're packaged in these interesting plastic tubes I haven't seen in North America. I hope you enjoy watching this video, as much as I enjoyed making it ^^ If you're interested to see more Korean art supplies, check out my Korean Art Supplies playlist here: ruc...

CHEAP ART SUPPLY Challenge 2021 (ft. Prang Watercolors & Crayola Colored Pencils)
Ur so good at art
@@atrovxver_vx Thanks 😊 I'm trying to learn
After sticking to watercolor for years, I also tried other mediums and art styles. For that subscription boxes are very useful. For example I had never heard of gouache before and it is now one of my favorite mediums. But when I realize that some medium isn't something I enjoy, I give it away to other (young) artists to try. That way it doesn't end up collecting dust and being thrown away, but it brings someone else joy :)
Thinking about it, it might be cool to make art boxes with supplies one doesn't use anymore for other artists in the area. Like a gift exchange kinda event
Do you have a boyfriend?
@@buildwithbless88 Not anymore, unfortunately 💔
I bought some gorgeous and very fibrous handmade cotton rag paper. Weirdly you could get it in A2, A3 and A4 sizes at nearly the same price so I got A2, x4 bigger than A4. I love the look of those natural colours but I think the lightfastness issue would bug me too much... Unless I can do art in black and white and use it as a vague colour wash and it doesn't really matter if it fades away
@ZadenZane The colors of the ink definitely change over time! Unlike homemade lake pigments, they surprisingly didn't fade like I thought they would. I uploaded a follow up video if you're curious with how they turned out over three years. Some of the inks really surprised me: ruclips.net/video/iPkjGhRbvOs/видео.html
I actually quite like how the sailor turned out! He's my second favorite portrait after the crying girl in the center. I still haven't tried any portraits myself since your last 100 heads video...
Hi Nuitetoilee 👋🏼 Ah I'm glad you like the sailor, thank you for saying so! Haha do you still plan to try portrait painting any time soon, or are you shelving it for now?
@@JuliRoxArt I'll stick with landscapes and florals for now. I just don't feel inspired to paint people anymore. I painted portraits digitally for a long time and now I feel like I've had enough of them.
this looks awesome lovely, great work! enjoyed till the end 🥰
Thank you, Chantelle! I really appreciate it 😊
totally loved this video! I also love BC!! So much fun to have your 'Bestie' be a part of your adventure! TFS!
Thank you so much! I normally have to convince my sister to hang out with me, but on this day, she was more than willing 😆
❤❤❤😂 Be patient, sisters ARE always sisters!! My sis is my BESTIE forever!! Sometimes we just need to sit back and let them be who they are ❤❤❤😉
All good points! I avoid subscription boxes for this reason. It's better idea to have some friends swap supplies trying to emulate a sub box for each other. Ideally some of the items they really aren't using overlap with what items you'd enjoy and don't already have. Everyone wins.
Wow❤
Thanks for heart
Loved this video. 😂 The note is hilarious in retrospect. Love your sense of humor. I think (for me anyway) the allure of new supplies is the idea of new possibilities. I am definitely a supply hoarder, but I really try not to be. I enjoy regifting my old supplies. 🙈 I feel inspired to try a no-spend challenge soon.
P.S. I think what you did is a really cool idea for maybe supply trading or something like that?? How fun?!
Ohh this would be fun.. kind of like a clothing swap, but with art supplies. Love that idea! I hope you do try a no-buy/low-buy, even if it's just for a month. It's an interesting challenge to bring awareness to how often we have the desire to shop. Let me know if you do decide to give it a try! Good luck 💪🏼
Thank you for making this video and pointing this out. When you started the video I already had a hunch where it was going and loved that it indeed went that way. I've been hoarding my artsupplies for years now and have markers, colouring pencils and paint left untouched because I wanted to perserve them and as a result I've been buying other supplies left and right. It has been only a week or two when I said "Screw it" and took my supplies for what they actually are and used them accordingly with the idea of actually making art of them and letting go of the perserving idea. Seeing this video really eases my mind and tells me that I wasn't the only one with this issue. (I don't know whether neurodivirsity is a clear factor, but I'm also part of it 😂) Thank you so much for speaking out. This should be discussed more often and the issue of overconsumption at this rate and in this field should be more openly discussed without being judged about it! Bravo! 🎉
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts! Art supplies are meant to be *used*; but it's easy to forget about that when we start seeing our supplies as more of a collection than anything else. I'm glad you've decided to have your supplies live out their purpose 😆 If they had feelings. I'm sure they'd be very happy about it haha
Unrelated to my other comment but related to the video this time lol I started scrapbooking via a subscription box, and the thing I MOST remember, and hate about what I've made, is opening that box and going "oh... it's this". I was learning, I didn't know what I needed or wanted, and I thought maybe it could become what was in the boxes. Just like music. Most of the music I listened to I didn't like right away, it required a bunch of repeats to enjoy. But after years (over 20 now) of creating and collecting and curating an inventory, you're absolutely right that I have a lot and I know exactly what my style is and what will get used. One of my favourite companies just switched to a subscription box only model, and I point blank told them I would not be buying from them with that model. I don't want to spend (no lie) $160 a month on items I cannot see ahead of time, and likely will not use half of. That's insanity in any time, let alone a recession. I don't even let people buy me gifts that I didn't pick out ahead of time, because I don't want things to go to waste. I LOVE things, I LOVE presents, but I can't stand stuff just sitting around. Inventory, sure, because I cannot just jet off to the store the second inspiration strikes, or I need to make something, but *used* and *usable* items only.
Oh wow, I haven't even heard of scrapbooking subscription boxes. That's so interesting! $160 a month is absolutely ludicrous :o For items you don't even know you're purchasing, no less. It's great to hear that you are intentional about the supplies you decide to buy. I've heard that scrapbooking is on a whole nother level when it comes to the amount of materials available for purchase. Good on you for escaping the clutches of art-supply hoarding 😄💪🏼
I don't think I ever fell into the random supply thing or bandwagons. I'm impulsive, very, because I'm neurodivergent and I allow myself to test what is, or could be, my thing. But I'm obsessive about research. My husband wants me to buy things that will get used, not wasted, as he's the breadwinner I let him dictate that kind of thing pretty easily. I need to know what it is, what it does, why it does it, and how it can be applied to what I already do. I need every supply I own to work with every other supply in some way, or to have a clear plan in my mind what thing is for what project I have in mind. And as far as I can remember, I've always been good at that. When I try something, it's usually the lesser cost/lower quality item and I only upgrade if I prove I'll use the item if it did a.b.c better. Or years down the line when a better product hits the market. Where I overconsume is tools, namely stamps. I'm a sucker for a cute image, since I can't draw on my own. I've tried many times, but I just despise the process of both learning and the creating. But my thing is "hoarding" images to be used doesn't bother me as much, because yes they're tools, but they're also wonderful to look at and spend time with. To organise and touch and enjoy, even without the art and creating aspect. They're the one type of thing that doesn't go bad, doesn't get boring, and doesn't harm anything.... except that pocket book, even when they're not actively being used.
I've been an artist all my life (20+years) and I've never had a problem with hoarding... until now. There's just so many good deals out there ;w;
It's hard to resist, isn't it? 🥲
Hey there
I really wonder if art supply hoarding and overconsumption was as prevelant before social media. My guess is no. When we are bombarded with all the different art supplies that are out there on social media, it's hard not to feel like we're missing out. But if we hadn't been on social media in the first place, we would've never even known about these products and not missed them one bit. It doesn't help that everyone is trying to sell you something these days. I'm so tired of sponsored videos, or "this company sent me something to try out but I'm not technically sponsored" videos. That's basically still free advertisement for them and they know exactly why they're sending stuff to influencers. It's not to support them, it's for their own gain. Social media marketing is the way to go right now. I love watching art videos on RUclips but I can't escape all the consumerism that comes with it. There are not enough art channels that don't feature product reviews or hauls in one way or another. I've unfollowed so many channels over the past few months because I couldn't stand having all these product reviews in my feed. I have considered trying art supply mystery boxes myself because it sounds like a fun challenge to use art supplies I wouldn't normally choose. But ultimately I decided against it for the same reasons you mentioned. I would most likely just end up with a bunch of things I don't care about and don't use. That seems like a waste. I already have everything that excites me and if there's really a new medium I want to get into, I will pick the things that are exactly right for me and not hope that a mystery box accidentally sends me something I like.
Nuitetoilee!! How have you been? You make such a good point, social media has bombarded us with so many different kinds of ads. It can get really exhausting. There are some that I don't mind too much, like when it comes to small art-related businesses, and items that have more of a handmade touch. But in terms of ads for random, gimmick-y products, they just drive me insane! And they're so hard to avoid. They pop up everywhere.. Same with ads for random art products. Just how many student-grade watercolor palettes are out there? I feel like there's a new product popping up every week.. Do you ever get tempted by art supply reviews and some of the new supplies being pushed? Or are you past the point of wanting every new item? Thank you for taking the time to write out such an insightful response. I'm glad to hear from you, as always 😊
@@JuliRoxArt I do still get tempted, it's hard not to let it affect me. Which is why I try to avoid content that will make me feel tempted. It's not easy though. The only way to do that effectively would be leaving all art spaces online, but I don't want that either. Sharing my passion with others and finding inspiration in other people's art is important to me. I don't have any artist friends so online spaces are the only way for me to connect with other artists.
@nuitetoilee Oh it's too bad you don't have local art friends. I understand the feeling. Social media does have its upsides, you're totally right. The ability to see other people's work, to be inspired by them, and to connect with other artist. It's just gotten so crowded with pushing products and services. But I think you're onto something with filtering the types of accounts that you follow. I heard that Cara is a decent platform for artists to connect! I've never tried it myself, but might make an account one day.
I actually don't mind a few channels that are dedicated to reviewing say Watercolors for example. Especially if these people choose to buy the supplies with their own money, and do proper comparisons with other brands to see where they stand so you can make an informed descision about what you want to buy. But yeah the sponsored or "free product" reviews are a plague.
I am someone who is very new to the art space and because of my adhd, I find that I don’t always want to do the same medium. So I do have a lot of art supplies. I try to be very intentional now, but I definitely struggle with getting myself to actually make art because it’s so much harder to build the habit as an adult.
It really is hard to do art as an adult. Life just gets so busy! And while some people use art to decompress after a long day, others (myself included) find it hard to even think about a subject to draw or paint 🫠 That really only leaves weekends to be int he right headspace to do something creative.. Which mediums do you normally switch between?
@@JuliRoxArt water color, acrylic, and polymer clay. I absolutely love sculpting the most so I always come back to that.
@kimieatsu Wow, that’s a fun mix of mediums! Polymer clay is something that I don't hear very often. Thanks for sharing 😄
I have never bought an art box. My kids sent me a couple art snack boxes for Christmas a couple years ago and it was fun to open and see what was in the box. That said, I’m to the point where I rarely buy anything but open stock to replace colors. I did my hoarding during COVID which paid off a bit-prices have really increased since then!😳
Oh man, I'm with you. Prices are absolutely insane right now 🫠 Even more of a reason to take a step back from buying art supplies. It's sweet that your kids got you an Art Snacks box as a gift. It does sound like a fun experience to open it up and see what's inside. Thank you for sharing your thoughts 😊
Hi ! It's really a great video and I really think you've got a point. I've been doing art for many years and I started scrapbooking and cardmaking about 6 years ago, meaning I accumulated a ton of art supplies. Thankfully, I can use most of my supplies in both hobbies but I started realizing that I was drawing and painting less and less. It's not like I got bored of it, I just don't know what to draw anymore. I've got a lot of supplies that's collecting dust, but I love it and I hope to use it in the future. I've also started to get sell some of the stuff I bought when I got into scrapbooking, that same type of supplies you buy when you don't really know you're style, but that paper is soooo pretty 😂 For a few years now, since 2020 - 2021 I've also thought about a no buy challenge but it's too hard for me so I do low buy, focusing on the areas where I have the most supplies and doing a "project pan" inspired by the beauty community. It has really helped me and now I mostly buy what I know I will use and try not to buy duplicates. I'm trying to keep money to buy better quality stuff and "inventorizing" what I have and what I buy each month. I'm also trying follow the "it has to fit into the container" rule but it doesn't really work for my most favorites. At least I'm trying and getting better at it, and that's what counts. Anyway, I've never bought art or mystery boxes since it's not really a thing in my country, but your video is such a great topic of discussion !
Hi Mikohikari 👋🏼 Sorry, I totally missed your comment! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Ah, I wonder if the beauty community was the first to coin the no-buy lifestyle-I also first discovered it through a makeup RUclipsr. What is a "project pan"? I've never heard of this. Great on you for pursuing a low-buy! And for knowing what is realistic for you and your lifestyle 😄 I think diving into a no-buy is quite a bit intense and might put some people off. Sometimes, I ask myself if I'm willing to do another no-buy.. but maybe I'll follow your lead and start with a low-buy as well 😆 Have you noticed a change in your mindset when it comes to shopping? I found the longer I stuck with the no-buy, the less I desired all of the new, shiny, tempting art supplies out there. And even though it was a few years ago now, it still impacts my thought process when it comes to purchasing new items. I hope you find that it's just as impactful 😊 Good luck, and thanks again for your thoughtful comment.
@@JuliRoxArt Hi ! I think the beauty community definitely had a big role in the no-buy mindset as most of the time makeup is really expensive and you can't use everything you have in one lifetime, especially if you receive PR. A "project pan" is a project in which you choose some makeup (or in my case art supplies) and make a point in using all of it in a certain period of time (a year, a month...) . The name comes from the eyeshadow pans in palettes, as when you see the bottom of an eyeshadow (the metal or plastic) it's called "hitting pan". Then it diverted into other types of makeup and I changed it first to use up my handcreams and then to use art supplies. I don't know if a low buy really changed how I buy, even though now I usually reflect in the store about what I put into my basket. Am I going to use it now ? Do I already have a project in mind ? Do I have a place to store it ? Is it to expensive ? Can I buy it later ? I go through my basket before check out and usually put back a few items and it feels better. Also when I saw new stickers I used to want everything, now I just buy the ones I really love and know I will use. So I guess it's a good thing. And I know sometimes I don't fully respect my low-buy (like right now, as I bought washi tapes and it was on my no buy list) but it needs to be something I will use right up (or have a project with) or something I won't be able to find later and I'm totally in love with it 😂 Although, there are some products I know I won't buy anymore and I'm not tempted to try more, my low buy hasn't really helped much with my shopping mindset. I still want stuff, but inside I know it's because I'm passionate and if I buy it I MUST use it one way or another. There are a lot more things I could say about this topic and I know I forgot about a lot that I thought about after my last comment. I just hope I could add some thoughts that were interesting and help you along your no-buy journey. Have a good day 😊
I am guilty of hoarding sketchbooks, but in my defense, I also give them to my friends for birthday gifts. They are not as hooked to online art supplies shopping and the local shop does not carry the sketchbooks I get. Recently I found Baohong Sketchbooks on Shein. The price is awesome. The only issue is that I have several sketchbooks started and I want to finish some before moving on.
Yes, it is why I never buy art boxes. I enjoy making a research about the materials I am buying, watching reviews and demonstration videos. When I decide on getting a supply I try to make it work with the rest of my supplies. Some supplies I use rarely while some get used by my daughter. E.g. I rarely get to use Poscas because my daughter claimed them as soon as I got them. And since I mostly got them because I was influenced by RUclips I was actually happy they will get used by my dauughter and her friends. I buy supplies every month, and recently I have stopped buying sets, but rather get a thing here and there, a tube, a pencil, a few crayons, etc. I do plan to splurge my Christmas money on a set of pencils, probably Inktense.
Hi katarinaholik 👋🏼 Thanks for stopping by. It sounds like you're quite intentional when shopping for art supplies, that's really awesome! And it's great you have someone in your own home who can give your supplies a second life 🤗 I'm entirely with you when it comes to doing research and watching reviews before buying a new art supply. It really is important to make informed decisions. I normally sit on something I want to purchase for a month or longer if it's not a necessity. Just to make sure it's something that I really want to bring into my space. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts~
@@JuliRoxArt yes, doing research is a big part of my art process. I watch tons of videos. For larger purchases I also take long time, sometimes contemplating for over a year. Like Inktense, they are on my radar for maybe even few years, but I keep putting them off. It took me over a year to build sizeable collection of colored pencils, and I just love them. I just have started a series of illustrations that I plan to incorporate in an art book. I am waiting for the delivery of a new organiser for my pencils too. Last few months I invested my hobby money into small organization solutions for my supplies. Making supplies more available, and in my reach is making using them easier thus I use them more.
@katarinaholik Beautiful!! Yes, if you're able to see all of your supplies, you know exactly what you have, and you can access them more easily. Haha, I don't think I've ever waited an entire year to buy something-that's next level 😮 I admire your self-control. It's also cool that you're working on your own art book! It must be really exciting to have a project in the works. Good luck 😄💪🏼
I have been doing art on and off for about 4 years now (after a break) I got fed up of cheap art supplies, those crusty watercolours for kids, horrible paper and those coloured pencils that break every time you sharpen them and hardly have any pigment and I watched a lot of youtube videos - I came to the conclusion quite early on that people bought too much! There are many youtubers who literally have a shop worth of items, all unused and they keep buying more stuff, and the saddest part is when things have expired, and have to be thrown out, unused or hardly used... That last is what has stopped me from getting more because I want to use what I have already. I don't have a problem with subscription boxes, though, as long as they have good quality supplies in them, and aren't too pricy as they've helped me to decide what brands to buy and introduced me to supplies I didn't know existed - I would have still been buying the awful cheap stuff that I don't like without them but there comes a point when you have to stop the subscription and use what you have. I've found my preferred supplies are watercolours, India Ink, Acrylic Ink, water-proof fineliners and good quality coloured pencils (both watercolour and normal ones.)
@craftyhobbit7623 It's quite hard to balance whether or not to invest in higher quality supplies, especially when just starting out, isn't it? It makes perfect sense to me to start with the more affordable, lower quality supplies before moving up to student grade, then professional once you're able to commit to a medium. But there's so much exploration with art, and so many different mediums to try out. It's all exciting when you're just learning, you just want to try a bit of everything! The downside is, it leaves you with a whole collection that just gathers dust (and a whole in your wallet haha). Thank you for sharing your experience! You bring up a great point about art subscription boxes giving you a bite size of different mediums to try out. I see its appeal if you're at the stage of figuring out which mediums you like to work with the most. Rather than buying entire sets of mediums to play with, you can get a box full of little things to try out. That's a point I never considered. It works especially well because the subscription boxes normally include good-quality supplies. So subscribers are more likely to enjoy them. I like your perspective! Thanks for shining some light on a different side of the story 😊
I'm really against overconsumption in every aspect of my life - except it seems, art supplies. I have so many sketchbooks but I still end up on Amazon looking for the perfect sketchbook the one that's going to make my sketchbooks look as perfect as the ones on here and instagram. I have supplies I haven't opened but was hugely excited to buy. I really enjoyed your video and you made some excellent points, I'm pleased youtube recommended you to me. I'll be doing no spend september and hopefully it'll lead into a no spend year.
I don't know what it is about shopping for art supplies.. it really is a kryptonite, isn't it? I'm glad to hear you're planning to do a no-buy next month! It really brings consumption habits to the forefront. Even though mine only lasted for a few months back in 2021, it made a huge impact on how I shop even to this day. Hopefully you’ll find it just as eye-opening. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts 😊
Wait...what?!? You're a genius! That was deep... I'm kind of a hoarder, and I applaud you. *taking a bow*
Hahaha I'm actually really happy you fell for it! I was worried it wasn't convincing enough 🤭
@@JuliRoxArt I totally fell for it 🤣👏👏👏
Great video. I’m really struggling. I always seem to need just one more paint 😢
Right?? It's so hard to resist the urge 😭
Wow, that was a great video and it really resonated with me. First, I have to say that art box you created was brilliant! You had me hook line and sinker with it! haha But seriously, I have been on a no-buy and have really struggled to adhere to it. The crazy thing is that despite the fact that I literally have NO MORE ROOM in my art cabinets (3 7-ft tall IKEA cabinets and 2 dresser drawers, one of which is a large double bedroom dresser drawer) I continue to give in to the want monster. I want to save money to buy a nice quality sit/stand art desk (medical issues) and I really want to go on an exotic art retreat. But I keep spending it on art supplies. Dang it is tough. I have gotten sucked up into the out-of-control capitalism machine and am fighting get out of it. But even though I keep failing at it, I am not going to give up. I am making some progress. As far as I am concerned, some progress is better than no progress. Ironically, I watched this while taking a break from cleaning up and doing some organizing and decluttering in my art space. Speaking of which, back to the grind for me. Thanks for the great content. We really need to hear this message more often.
Hi TracieWho 👋🏼Thank you for taking the time to write this out. And congrats on taking on a no-buy! It's really eye-opening isn't it? Just to shed on light how often we have the urge to shop for more. It's also a really difficult lifestyle change to stick with. I think I'm also overdue for a no-buy.. Buying new art supplies just feels so easy to justify, doesn't it? An exotic art retreat sounds amazing! When you go on one, please report back, I'd love to hear about it. And please keep up your no-buy! It's a really admirable thing to take on. I'm rooting for you 💪🏼 Good luck with the rest of your decluttering. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.
Very clever way to demonstrate your points. I loathe my overconsumption of art products. I’m trying hard to just stop doing that. Thank you for this.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad the video resonated with you. It's hard to break free of consumption habits. I'm constantly fighting with myself over this, too. It drives me crazy sometimes 🫠
I find that many of Amazons journals do not have great quality watercolor paper in them.
You definitely need to dig to find good ones. Or just watch a ton of reviews. Here's a video by Emily Olson that compares a ton of Amazon watercolor journals: ruclips.net/video/SdXnCHe6o-g/видео.htmlsi=ulXQDCH1bIHnaePR
Honestly I just went out yesterday and bought a new pack 🤣
Honestly, I don't blame you one bit 😂🤣
Could these work with fountain pens?
To be safe, I'd say no, although I'm not too familiar with fountain pens 🤔
I wish there was something like that in Germany, art supplies are so expensive here😢
It's a pretty neat concept, huh? Keep an eye out, you never know!
Why do you sound like a Disney princess. (not the good ones)
Haha is this a compliment or an insult? I'll choose to be both flattered and offended 😙
Your blending is really nice it looks amazing
Thank you so much 😊
this is valid as hell
Oh, and just so you know, for some reason, some watercolor pencils don’t work on certain papers. I don’t know if that would change it for your gold. Maybe it’s just too old as the metallic colors often are a little more difficult to activate. I’m a fellow Canadian in Quebec and Ontario. I’ve also Thrifted in Vancouver with a little bit of success. But my most recent score is my best yet with all those colored pencils.
@catbraunwell6450 Ahh interesting! I didn't know that about metallic colours. I'm pretty certain you're correct in that the pigment in it is just far too old. It's great to hear from a fellow art-supply thrifter! Isn't it fun finding old treasures? 😆
I just Thrifted some Laurentian watercolor pencils on Tuesday of this week and I also Thrifted a whole bunch of vintage prima color pencils from the 60s and 70s about a month ago from a thrift shop. So fun. I agree with you the thrill is just too much when you find an art supply that you know you’re actually gonna use.
Sorry, I must've missed this! These are such a cool finds! I find that colored pencils are more common than any other supply, but watercolor pencils are hard to come by. Watercolor paints as well. It's awesome finding thrifty treasures. When you can give something old and forgotten another life. Nothing beats that feeling 😊
I like how frugal you are, as am I. I'm also ADHD and like novelty...which it sounds like you very much do too....
Haha times are tough! We gotta save a buck where we can. And oh boy, I have no discipline when it comes to sticking to something til the end. The result ends up being "mediocre at many things". It's not the most useful set of skills 😂
I had as many (or more) problems making paper. It’s harder than you would think! You get an A for effort in my book! You are an amazing painter though! You can always buy paper, but talent like yours is rare! I’m sure your future attempts at handmade paper will just keep getting better and better, so don’t give up. I appreciate your honesty and bravery at attempting such a difficult process and showing us the results, and I learned a lot!
Hi Susansharp 👋🏼 Paper making is tough, isn't it? Some folks make it look easy haha. Thank you for taking the time to write such a kind comment. And thank you for watching!
I found one in New Jersey recently. I was shocked no one else was talking about them. Thanks for letting me know about this one!
Very nice! How was it? Was the selection alright?
@@JuliRoxArt they had so many things. Not as much as youvv show here but a good selection. I think they havent been open super long
Isn't it a great concept? Better for the environment, and affordable supplies for us broke artists haha

I hope you're doing well! Somehow I didn't find this video until now. Good to see that your handmade paper held up over the years. I love your color choices for the lemon painting, the "unnatural" greens for the leaf work really well. I actually like how the peppers turned out, but I know the frustration of starting a painting one way and then slapping a bunch of other media on it to cover up the previous attempts :') I think it worked out in the end
Hello my friend! Great to hear from you. How have you been? Thank you for your encouraging words as always 😊 Have you been doing a lot of arty things? Summer is in the air! I want to draw and paint, but spending time outdoors is just too tempting 😂
@@JuliRoxArt I went on a hiking vacation and painted outside a few times! That's one way to combine the two 😉 Even if I don't end up painting while I'm outdoors, I love taking pictures of flowers or the landscape around me as inspiration for later :)
Haha an artist's work never ends! Hiking vacations sound awesome. Do you have to venture far? Or are there some nice scenes close to you?
@@JuliRoxArt It's like you described it in your video about beginning art as an adult. Once you are an artist, you see the world differently. You start to see inspiration everywhere. I went to a big foresty area not too far away, a little over an hour. I've been there quite a few times throughout my life and it feels a bit like my second home.
@nuitetoilee I love this! It's so important to have a nearby place to run off to outdoors. Especially when the weather's so perfect. Do you have any big summer plans? Trips, art projects, etc.?
Did you say buddens? 😭 😅 but seriously, I treasure my dad’s old Venus Unique erasable colored pencils. Of course, the erasers have petrified. But I don’t use them. They’re keepsakes forever.
LOL I did say "buddens" 😂 Is your dad an artist? That's a really cool keepsake! Sentimental too, which makes them even more special 🩷
@@JuliRoxArt he did drafting. He taught me everything about it when I was in elementary school. How to use the drafting table, T squares, L squares, pencils, equipment, etc. That’s where my passion for drawing started.
@Rich_Larr that's awesome, what a cool way to get into art! I'm sure it makes your dad happy to know he inspired your hobby 😊
I love this idea, who cares if it’s not “Perfect “. I love imperfect!
Glad you enjoyed it! Imperfection is part of the joy of making things yourself, isn't it?
This sooo not relatable to me, i cant even afford pencils😂
Sorry to hear that.. 🥲💔
It always surprises me when I find the *exact* video that I've been looking for and I see that it doesn't have 120k views. Like, why not??? What are people watching instead of this???😂 Thanks so much for the update!! This is so interesting!!!❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your comment, you made my day! I'm so happy you found this video useful 😊
I have the same himi brush set that ur using. However my detail brush is a 5 not 6
I just checed on ali express, it sells the detal brush is a 4
Oh wow, interesting. So depending on where you purchase it, they vary in size?
@@JuliRoxArt I bought it from Lazada Singapore. Yeah they are in vary in sizes depending where u bought it from
i wish i could draw people like this . to me these are good for just starting.
Hi Nickorange 👋🏼 I'm really glad you think so! It's been a process, but good things take time I guess
How cool this video! ❤❤❤ And the painting is the cherry on top ❤
Thank you 😄 I'm glad you enjoyed it
Oh when I was young I was madly in love with Vancouver : cheap , beautiful, little traffic . Now not so much I get in and I get the hell out.
Sorry for the late response. I'm just seeing this now! Times have really changed, eh? The cost of living here is out of control 🫠
Love your video. I also watched the one with making the paper. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you so much for watching and reaching out ❤️ I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
@@JuliRoxArt I have a friend who wants to make paper too, I am wondering where did you get aluminum sulfate and gelatine?
@katarinaholik I picked up the plain gelatin at the supermarket in the baking section. Aluminum sulfate was a bit trickier to find. I actually bought it from a plant nursery. Potassium aluminum sulfate (alum) works too. It's used for preserving certain foods, so maybe your friend would be able to find it at a grocery shop as well. It's definitely a niche item, so it can take some searching. Good luck 💪🏽
@@JuliRoxArt thanks for sharing this. have you tried sizing wet paper? can it be done and how? sorry for bothering you.
@katarinaholik No bother at all! Technically, you can blend sizing into paper, you need to look up "internal sizing for paper making". The gelatin sizing I used is an external type that's applied afterwards. I attempted internal sizing at first, but it didn't go well. That's why I resorted to the gelatin. Though, if you manage to find an internal method that works well, then I'd imagine it would end in a much better result. My paper became really stiff because of the gelatin, so I don't know if it's the best option. It works great for limiting absorbancy, but the texture wasn't pleasant to work with. If you end up discovering a better method, please let me know. Good luck 😆
